NBC "In Touch" With Michaels After Arrest

((HT: LA Times))

Spokesman Greg Hughes has acknowledged that the network has been "in touch" with Al Michaels after his DUI arrest and citation earlier Sunday morning. Michaels was cited for delivering a .08 on a breathalyzer exam over the weekend.

.08 is the high end of the legal limit for intoxication charges in the state of California.

Matt Stevens follow-up in the Times Monday morning has Santa Monica (CA) Sergeant Richard Lewis elaborating on the idea that they smelled alcohol and witnessed slurred speech:

“They pulled him over, detected the smell of alcoholic beverage, slurred speech, they did [field sobriety tests], arrested him, and then he was booked.”

Lewis said the department does not release the blood alcohol concentration of those arrested on suspicion driving under the influence, but added that Michaels was arrested on a violation of the vehicle code that includes driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or greater.

Sports Broadcaster Al Michaels Arrested in California for Alleged DUI, Ordered to Appear in Court in June

SANTA MONICA — NBC Sports announcer Al Michaels was arrested over the weekend in Southern California on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said Sunday.
Michaels was pulled over at about 9:30 p.m. Friday after officers manning a DUI checkpoint witnessed him make an illegal U-turn, Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said.
Michaels, the play-by-play man for “Sunday Night Football,” was taken to the station, where he registered a blood alcohol level over the .08 percent legal limit, according to Lewis.
He was booked for suspicion of DUI and held for about five hours before being released on his own recognizance, Lewis said.
“We are aware of the situation and we’ve been in contact with Al,” said Greg Hughes, a spokesman for NBC Sports. “We have no further comment at this time.”
A call Sunday by The Associated Press to Michaels’ agent was not immediately returned.
Michaels was ordered to appear in court June 26.

Lakers top Knicks for fifth straight win

Kobe Bryant engineered a second-half comeback, helping the Los Angeles beat the New York Knicks 100-94 on Tuesday and extend the Lakers' winning streak to five games while lifting them to .500.

Bryant scored 34 points in his NBA-record 15th Christmas Day game and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks. Bryant, the league's leading scorer, has topped 30 or more points in nine straight games.

The Lakers improved to 14-14 - 9-9 under new coach Mike D'Antoni - and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home.

The Knicks controlled most of the game behind Anthony and J.R. Smith, who had 24 points. But they struggled offensively in the fourth, when Anthony was limited to seven points and Smith had five.

Smith's 3-pointer pulled New York to 96-94. After Pau Gasol made one of two free throws, Smith missed another 3 that would have tied the game at 97 with 32 seconds left.

Gasol dunked with 12 seconds to g

My Month Of 1,077 Pages

The post was called My Year of 11,000 Pages. It was a diary of sorts, looking back on my plan to read 33 books while I was 33 years old. Maybe you read it. More likely, you started to read it, realized how ridiculously long it was, then stopped somewhere in the middle.I was really quite proud of it, both as an accomplishment and as a piece of writing. A friend suggested I shop it around a little, to see if maybe a larger publication might be interested in using it. I gave that some serious thought, but ultimately it was the advice of another acquaintance, a professional writer who got his start by posting on his own blog, which rang most true to me. This was my idea. Why give it to someone else? Why not try to grow it on my own and see if maybe it catches on.And so, here we are.Consider these- now monthly- posts half book review/half reading journal. They’ll be part chronicle of intellectual curiosity and part naked attempt to show off the size of my information intake. Each one w...

Wimbledon considers calendar change

Wimbledon is considering a calendar change that would have the tournament begin three weeks after the French Open instead of two, and top players like the idea of more time between the two Grand Slam events.

The proposed switch has appeal because it would give players more opportunity to adjust to grass after the clay season ends with the French Open, All England Club chief executive Richard Lewis said. The earliest the change could take place is 2014.

Players have long lobbied for more time between the French Open and Wimbledon. Grand Slam champions such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer could use an extra week to get used to the faster grass surface, 2002 Wimbledon winner Lleyton Hewitt said Tuesday.

''The grass court season has always been too short,'' Hewitt said. ''It's pretty tough for guys like Rafa, Djokovic and that to bounce back a couple of weeks after the French and expect them to play their best tennis.''

Djokovic agreed the change would hel

Wimbledon Could Be Moved Back a Week as All England Club Considers New Schedule

It may take only a few hours to pass from France to England, but many tennis experts think it should take more than two weeks to go from the clay court play of Roland Garros to the grass finish of Wimbledon. The All England Club may be taking care of that, according to the BBC. "We are seriously considering" moving back the start date of Wimbledon, All England Lawn Tennis Club chief executive Richard Lewis told the BBC. "It's often been discussed, and it would be ideal to have a longer break. It would be three weeks, ideally, between the...

Richard Lewis, who is the English rugby league chairman, will replace Ian Ritchie, who left Wimbledon this year to run English rugby union's governing body.

Lewis played for Britain in the Davis Cup from 1977-83, and reached No. 68 in the world rankings.

Lewis says ''as a former tennis professional, the prospect of helping shape the future of the club and the premier tennis tournament in the world is one to be relished.''

NFL, ex-players want concussion suits heard in Pa.

The National Football League hopes to consolidate in Philadelphia a string of lawsuits filed across the country by former players who say they've suffered concussion-related brain injuries.

Seven former players filed the first such lawsuit last summer in Philadelphia, where a similar lawsuit filed Monday seeks more than $5 million for more than 100 ex-players. Other lawsuits are pending or expected in California, Florida, New York and elsewhere, said lawyer Sol Weiss, who's involved in the first lawsuit.

A hearing is set for Jan. 26 in Miami for the parties to ask a federal judicial panel to consolidate the cases before a U.S. District Court judge in Philadelphia. The NFL requested the move to avoid trying related litigation in several districts, according to its motion.

The lawsuit filed Monday seeks damages for traumatic brain injuries and neurodegenerative disorders on behalf of 106 former players, including former Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Brent Boyd and three Hall of Famers: Detroit

NFL concussion saga moves to new phase: litigation

After congressional hearings, increased media attention and revised rules, the NFL's concussion saga has entered its next phase: litigation.

More than 125 former pro football players are suing the league - and, in most cases, helmet-maker Riddell - via at least five complaints brought in state or federal courts over the past few months and as recently as last week. They say the NFL should have done more to warn about the dangers of head injuries and should do more to help retired players.

''We've moved on from a debate about whether or not it's really a problem - it's clear it is - to the next question: What do we do about it?'' said Richard Lewis, a lawyer representing players in a class-action suit filed in California state court.

There also are at least three personal-injury cases against the NFL pending in California, along with a case filed in U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania. They're believed to be the first examples of former players joining together to file co
