Darnell McDonald singled twice, doubled, walked, scored twice, and knocked-in a run, Taiwan Easterling singled, doubled, reached base on an HBP, and drove-in two runs, Jeffrey Baez drove-in three runs with a two-run double and a bases-loaded HBP, and Dan Vogelbach crushed a tape-measure two-run home run, leading the Daytona Cubs to a 10-7 victory over the Bakerfield Blaze (Cincinnati Reds Hi-A affiliate) on Field #3, and Starling Peralta celebrated his return to the Cubs organization with 3.1 IP of one-hit shutout ball and Gioskar Amaya singled and tripled, but it wasn't enough as Joe Hudson (Reds 2012 6th round draft pick - Notre Dame) slugged a solo HR onto Center Street to lead the Dayton Dragons (Reds Low-A affiliate) to a 3-1 victory over the Kane County Cougars on Field #2, in Cactus League Minor League Camp game action this afternoon at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Darnell McDonald's Dreadlocks & How They Hit Home For Me

As I predicted on the podcast I posted Monday, Darnell McDonald was designated for assignment yesterday to clear a roster spot for CC Sabathia, who had a very successful return to the Yankees rotation last night. As everyone knows, McDonald was claimed off waivers a few weeks ago when the Red Sox DFA'd him. And, as everyone knows, that meant his hair could no longer look like this:Now he is no longer with the team. How does he feel about cutting off his dreadlocks, essentially for nothing? I know I would be downright pissed. As some of you know I, too, have dreadlocks:Mine are obviously longer than McDonalds, so maybe it's unfair to make a comparison. But I keep thinking about how I would feel if I got hired by a company who told me I had to cut off my dreadlocks (which, by the way, I've had for over 20 years). If I really thought the job was worth it I would do it. So there I would be, towing the company line when, two weeks after my start date, I'd get called into ...

The move creates roster space for C.C. Sabathia, who starts tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Yankees claimed McDonald off of waivers from the Boston Red Sox 13 days ago. The 33-year-old has a .205/.297/.352 batting line in 103 plate appearances this year.

Darnell McDonald still had dreadlocks on Fenway scoreboard

Former Boston Red Sox player Darnell McDonald got polite applause during his first appearance at Fenway Park even while donning the hated New York Yankees pinstripes. But the electronic scoreboard operator might have had been having a little fun when he super-imposed a Yankee cap over the dreadlocked head of the player during the game.

Deceased Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's left behind strict rules concerning the neat grooming of his player's hair on their heads and face. So this might some sort of Sox revenge and probably the last time you see wild dreads underneath a Yankee player's cap during a game— even if it's only on the scoreboard.

The 33-year-old McDonald was cut by the Red Sox and picked up on waivers by the Yankees on Wednesday. One of the first questions the new Yankee had was could he keep his long hair— 2 1/2 years worth of growth— so he texted a picture of himself to Yankee Captain Derek Jeter along with a message: "Do I have to cut it off?&quot

Darnell McDonald's Fourth of July Was Vastly Improved By Contract From Yankees (Video)

Darnell McDonald got some bad news just before the Fourth of July holiday, as the utility outfield was designated for assignment by the Red Sox. The now former Red Sox has since been signed by the New York Yankees, and he was even sporting a fresh haircut upon his return to Fenway Park on Friday night. NESN's Jenny Dell caught up with the former Red Sox outfielder before Friday night's game at Fenway Park to discuss his new team and his new hairdo. Check it out in the video above.
New York Yankees: McDonald is Gardner insurance

MLBTradeRumors.com reported that the New York Yankees acquired recently released Red Sox, outfielder Darnell McDonald off waivers yesterday after McDonald tweeted the news himself.

By adding 33-year old McDonald, who is a utility outfielder to the 25-man roster, is it safe to assume that Brett Gardner’s strained right elbow is still injured?
The Yankees have been without Gardner since April 17th, and have been given the runaround about how serious the injury to his elbow really is.
Gardner has attempted to return but complained of elbow pain in both his minor league rehab stints.
The NY Post reported back on June 15th that after multiple orthopedic specialists saw Gardner’s elbow, and unanimously reported that he did not need surgery; and suggested he take a third, 3-4 week rest period.
Let me tell you from experience that elbow injuries do not heal easily at all.
I partially tore my elbow tendon playing tennis three years ago. I tried ever...

Darnell McDonald now a Yankee

Boston Herald-OAKLAND, Calif. — Guess who may be coming back to Fenway Park on Friday night?A few days after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox, popular outfielder Darnell McDonald has been claimed off waivers by the Yankees, who open a four-game, three-day series at Fenway on Friday. McDonald batted .214 in 99 plate appearances this season, but he filled in ably over the past 2-1/2 seasons.Ok, so Darnell McDonald may not have been the best player the Red Sox had, but really what is the deal with letting them drop like flies? First we trade Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for two no-names and now he is performing better than ever. Then we take a guy (McDonald) who has stepped up because of all the injuries and just let him go for nothing. I'm not feeling the Red Sox organization right now. They just lost 3 straight to the Oakland A's and now have to face the Yankees in a 4 game series, let's hope Bobby V keeps it together and get's them closer ...

Red Sox fans won't have to go for long without seeing Darnell McDonald again, but the next time they do, he'll be wearing pinstripes. After being designated for assignment by the Sox, McDonald announced on Wednesday that he has signed with the team's hated rival, the New York Yankees. How are fans supposed to react to this news? On the one hand, McDonald isn't going to win himself any favor by joining the Evil Empire. On the other, should he really be vilified for taking a major league job? Given her natural charisma, chances are she'll be taking Jenny Dell's job a few years down the line, but it seems like an apropriate chance to take one last look at one of Jiana's best interviews -- with Red Sox president Larry Lucchino. Chances are Lucchino's never been in such a tough interview, as him and Jiana play a little word association, and talk about his favorite aspects of the job and Fenway Park. Watch...

Red Sox designate Darnell McDonald for assignment

The Red Sox have designated Darnell McDonald for assignment, in order to free up space on the roster for Josh Beckett. Beckett is starting tonight’s game.
Darnell McDonald joined the Red Sox in 2010 and was added to the major league roster after Jacoby Ellsbury was injured by Adrian Beltre. In his first game as a Red Sox, he hit a game tying home run in the bottom of the 8th inning against the Texas Rangers, then hit a walk off single in the bottom of the 9th to give the Red Sox a 7-6 victory. It was a moment Red Sox fans won’t soon forget.
McDonald hit .270/.336/.429 in his first year as a Red Sox, while collecting 9 home runs, 18 doubles, and 3 triples in 117 games. In 2011, he hit .236/.303/.401 with 6 home runs, 6 doubles, and a triple in 79 games. And so far this year, he’s hit .214/.309/.369 with 2 home runs and 7 doubles in 38 games.
And while his numbers are far from eye popping, in 2010 and 2011 he hammered lefties, and served as a solid 4/5th outfielder for the Red Sox. He...

Darnell McDonald Disappointed With His Pitching, 'Impressed' With Chris Davis' Stuff

BOSTON -- Darnell McDonald was stuck in an awkward position. With the bullpen taxed in Sunday's 9-6 loss in 17 innings, the group of relievers needed relief for themselves. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine tapped the outfielder for pitching duty. McDonald took the loss by surrendering a three-run homer to Adam Jones. But the outfielder wasn't overwhelmed when called upon -- he entered the 17th inning with a basic approach. "You want to come in, throw strikes -- that's the main thing," McDonald said. "I left one out over the plate, and Adam Jones was able to get it into...
