Cubs' Top 10 Prospects by Baseball America & Minor League Free Agents

Baseball America has listed their top 10 Cubs prospects....drumroll please...

Starlin Castro

Brett Jackson

Josh Vitters

Andrew Cashner

Jay Jackson

Hak-Ju Lee

Logan Watkins

Chris Carpenter

Ryan Flaherty

D.J. LeMehieu

I was expecting Kyler Burke to make the list, but apparently repeating A ball justifiably knocked him down. You can compare and contrast with Arizona Phil's Top 15 list from last week. You can see past Baseball America top 10 lists for the Cubs over at Wiklifield.

Keeping with the minor league news, Arizona Phil has been keeping track of the Cubs minor league free agents on the right sidebar and there now appears to be an official list.

Outfielders: Doug Deeds, John-Ford Griffin, Brad Snyder

The only differences from Phil's list are C Robinson Chirinos and RHP Austin-Bibens-Dirx, so I assume they've already resigned with the Cubs. The rest can still sign with the Cubs and according to Phil's sidebar note, Cubs have exclusive negotiating rights until the MLB free agency filing period ends, which I believe is this Saturday.

A bit of nostalgia on that list are some ex-Cubs including(and I'm sure I missed a few): Bobby Brownlie (Atlanta), Federico Baez (Cincinnati), Mark Bellhorn (Colorado), Ryan Harvey (Colorado), Lincoln Holdzkom (Pittsburgh), Juan Mateo (Pittsburgh), Rocky Cherry (San Diego), Shingo Takatsu (San Francisco), Jackson Melian (San Francisco), Josh Kroeger (Chicago White Sox), Michael Restovich (Chicago White Sox), Jason Waddell (Detroit), RIchie Robnett (NY Yankees), Jerome Williams (Oakland), and Buck Coats (Toronto).

I'm in the middle of moving right now, so I can't promise tomorrow's wrap will be on time.

Last night we had terrible starting pitching throughout the system. Tonight we had great starting pitching everywhere. Go figure.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs topped the Omaha Royals, 5-1.
Starter Casey Fossum gave up a home run to the second batter of the game and then shut the Royals down the rest of the way. Fossum went seven innings and allowed only five hits and one walk. (He did hit one batter too.) Fossum struck out five for his second win for the I-Cubs.

And on this day, my little baby girl turned 18 months old. Everybody but Peoria got her a present.
Iowa Cubs
One run in the eighth and one run in the ninth and the I-Cubs drowned out the Nashville Sounds, 2-1.

Casey Fossum - the Newest Iowa Cub

The Cubs signed lefty Casey Fossum and put him in Iowa. I don't know the specifics of the deal, but it seems like a wise move, given Neal Cotts' season-ending surgery. If Fossum is called-up by the Cubs, it will be his sixth major league uniform, starting with Boston, a year in Arizona, three in Tampa and then 2008 with the Tigers. Fossum started 2009 as a Met, but got the boot after three appearances. The Yankees scooped him up in May, stuck him in Scranton (per MLBTR). Fossum opted o...

via Chad "The Man" Jennings of the Scranton Times:Casey Fossum will start Saturday's Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees game. I don't have contract details or a corresponding move, but I know Fossum is the guy. The 31-year-old lefty opened the season with Triple-A Buffalo, had a 0.82 ERA through two starts and was called up to the New York Mets on April 19. He allowed one run in three outings out of the Mets bullpen before being designated for assignment on Monday. Fossum has pit...
