Atkins could be a free agent...

I made a case for bringing in Garrett Atkins as the platoon partner for Dan Murphy. The biggest problem most people had was that if the Mets traded for Atkins, they would have to give the Rockies something and then pay him around 7MM through arbitration. After the year Atkins had many weren't willing to give him that much money and it appears the Rockies can't find anyone to deal with. If Colorado can't find a trade partner by Nov. 20th they may end up releasing him...The Rockies ...

The legend of Ike Davis grows...

Lets try to keep this prospective, Dan Murphy hit over .300 in 49 games in the major leagues in 2008, then went to the Arizona fall league that very same year and hit .397.Whether in those two short stints Murphy's bat convinced the organization that he was major league ready or his hitting helped justify filling a position with a low budget alternative due to the Madoff scandal, is a matter of semantics. The fact of the matter is that the Mets convinced themselves that Murphy was major l...

Two out of winter ball...

The Mets have decided to forgo winter ball for Bobby Parnell and Dan Murphy.Parnell was going to winter ball as a starter, it was his decision to not play this winter but this might mean they decide to forget the Joba esque dramatics and leave him at what he's doing best, setting up.Not sure what it means for Murphy, who last year after hitting .313 in 49 major league games, lit it up in the Arizona Fall league and convinced them not to sign a left fielder. I thought Murphy's one chan...

Neyer rips Murphy...

I've never believed that Dan Murphy was a starter at any position, he's filled in the best at 1B but that still doesn't make him a starting 1B in the major leagues. If he does become a major league starter it should be after he develops those skills in the minors and not through on-the-job training in the majors.Moving forward it's a mistake for the Mets to believe they can live with the mistakes Murphy makes at first, for those only counting errors, it's much more subtle ...

It was reported earlier that Tobi Stoner and Dan Murphy will be playing winter ball (source Metsblog). Adam Rubin is reporting that several prospects will also be playing in the Arizona fall league.By the way, as the Daily News previously reported, top-10 prospects Ike Davis, Jenrry Mejia and Ruben Tejada will participate in the Arizona Fall League. They will be joined by pitchers Scott Moviel, Eric Niesen and Josh Stinson. Davis is currently with Team USA at the World Cup in Europe. source D...

Murphy's just not that good...

I think there's a separation between people who follow the Mets and those who follow baseball. When a big market team has a devastatingly disappointing season and misses the playoffs for the third time in a row, the National pundits expect that team to fill their holes, especially with almost 40MM coming off the books. However, for those of us who follow this team much closer then that, understand that this team has been giving us troubling signs and financially aren't going to just fil...

Move Dan Murphy to 2B, promote Nick Evans 1B

If we're really out of it and it's time to evaluate what we have, then instead of sticking with players who have no true future with the organization; lets see where, what we have fits. While showing nice hands at 1B, Murphy doesn't have the power to be a National League 1B and his batting average isn't high enough to compensate for the lack of power. Last off-season Murphy played 2B in the Arizona Fall league but received less then stellar reviews, after seeing him fielding gr...

For The Three Of You That Didn't See This Yet

Fly balls? Big problem. Bringing the Harlem Globetrotters to the baseball diamond? No problem. For all the blooper reels that Murphy has appeared in and will appear in for the rest of his life, let's hope the incredible play above evens things out a little bit. I give up trying to figure this stupid season out.

I'm Angry over Dan Murphy...

I'm not personally angry with Dan Murphy, in fact, I like the kid's work ethic, determination and grittiness, but I am disgruntled with the organizations handling of Murphy. The Mets spent the entire off-season attempting to sell the fan base on Dan Murphy's ability to become the starting left fielder based on 49 major league games, from the year before. When the Murphy propaganda machine started in October I made this post (10/9/08), questioning the decision. Simple put, 49 games ...

As I watched the start of the game last night and got my first look at Dan Murphy manning his new digs at first base, I have to admit my expectations for success were very low.

Another Murphy ?

Dan Murphy is set to start the season as the Mets starting left fielder and is hitting .357 this spring. Murphy has gained the trust of the manager to the extent that he was scheduled to sit tonight against a tough lefty but instead started and while he struggled in the field, he went 3-4 with two RBIs. What's amazing about Murphy is not only was he in AA a year ago but he wasn't listed on anyones prospect list. I can understand how his glove could drop his ranking but how could every...

Injury Update: Murphy has a strained right hamstring, will skip winter ball

Many reported yesterday that he had a right knee injury, but in fact - Daniel Murphy suffered a hamstring injury in winter ball. An MRI has revealed a Grade II strain of the right hamstring. Murphy won't play in Puerto Rico at all this winter, though that has as much to do with a heavy workload this year as the injury itself. He's expected to be fine by spring training. Murphy hurt himself in Arizona during batting practice on Nov. 11 and hadn't played since.

Dan Murphy to have a MRI Thursday

Newsday's David Lennon reports Daniel Murphy has left the Arizona Fall League because of "discomfort" in his right knee and will have an MRI on Thursday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

The Mets have refused to categorize the injury as either a strain or sprain, only saying that he complained of the discomfort during batting practice before a game on Nov. 11.
