Well, everyone knows the Giants are a pitching system. And they can find fine pitching performances from almost anywhere. Like 50th round pick Mike Loree throwing the equivalent of a perfect game last year. But I mean, seriously, at some point, isn't it just showing off? Tonight's highlight? (a) David Mixon, 20th round pick and career reliever, making just his third pro start of his career trying to help rest a San Jose rotation before the playoffs, p...

A combined lines to catch up here. The highlights from the system: (a) Not a highlight, but the game of Monday was the AZL Championship. In a rematch of 2007, the Mariners again defeated the Giants for the title, this time 4-3; (b) On Monday, Josh Phelps in Connecticut hit two home runs in one game, but the Defenders lost; (c,d,e) Evan Crawford's three hit game with a triple wasn't the highlight, excitement wise, in S-K's Monday win. That would be the back-to...

2009 First Base

This happens to be a fairly close position and everyone is strong here so its a good place to start. Yankees- Mark Teixeira- The Yankees stole him right from under Boston's nose and it probably puts them at the top here. Clearly, he was the best free agent available this year.
Odds 'n Ends (or, Michaels 'n Cabrera)

Jason Michaels signed with the Astros this afternoon. This isn't really a big deal because if you get past Michaels' improbable 44 RBI, he was actually quite awful with the Pirates last year. He hit .228/.300/.382 with the Bucs in 254 plate appearances and his right-handed swing doesn't really ...

Wake Up Pittsburgh!

The fat sleepy bear has since begun to stir this past week in preparation for pitchers and catchers reporting in 19 days with the minor league signing trio of Jaret Wright, Casey Fossum, and Hector Carrasco...now that's inspiring. Wright missed all of '07, the Rays let Fossum walk, and Carrasco had an era in the 5's...I smell NL Central champs! Have no fear Swashbuckler fans, they've signed more has-beens, never-weres, and who-the-hell-are-they-anyways: stud pitchers Adam Bern...

Yankees DL Another One?

Yankees leadoff hitter Johnny Damon was not in the starting lineup last night and may not be at all in the immediate future.

This recent development is bad news for the Yankees as they are already scrambling to fill-out their lineup. Yesterday the team designated Josh Phelps for assignment and will now be using Andy Phillips, who is a career .227 hitter, everyday at first.

This still leaves the DH position wide open though it will likely be filled by Hideki Matsui, which means you'll be seeing rookie Kevin Thompson in left field.

Andy Phillips Rides Again!

Yesterday, the Yankees promoted infielder and cult hero Andy Phillips from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Phillips had been playing well down there, batting .301 with 11 homers and 36 RBIs. Over the last two years, Phillips has battled some trying personal issues, including his wife's fight with cancer and his mother's recovery from a critical car accident. He missed a large chunk of spring training this season in order to be by his family's side, and was beaten out handily by Josh Phelps for the right-handed first baseman's job.

Over at WasWatching, Steve Lombardi notes that he doesn't quite get the fan fascination with Andy Phillips, who he describes as a "Four-A" hitter overmatched against major league pitchers.

Yanks Could Shea Hey to Hillenbrand

Theoretically, Hillenbrand would be an upgrade over the Miguel Cairo/ Josh Phelps experiment, however the 31-year-old veteran has seen his playing time decrease in Anaheim this season with the emergence of the Angels' Casey Kotchman. Shea is batting .246 with three homers and 18 RBIs in a paltry 175 at-bats.

Chris Shelton Gets Booed in AAA

Although Chris Shelton had a successful first game in AAA (2-for-4 with an RBI triple), he got booed when he made a mental mistake on the basepaths. "Running to second on a ground ball hit by Josh Phelps, Shelton eluded the tag by Louisville second baseman William Bergolla, then the fielder threw to first for the force out. However, Shelton stopped running for a second, then first baseman Earl Snyder threw to second base to tag Shelton out. He received a fair amount of boos for that one."
