Ramirez maxing out his stats in Frisco

Frisco Roughriders catcher Max Ramirez has been on a tear of late. In his last 10 games Ramirez the starting catcher for the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers has hit .543 driving in 8 and scoring 6 times. This week he was honored as the player of the week for the Texas League.

Ramirez is a 23-year-old catcher in an organization with a logjam at the position.

The Rangers currently have Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Gerald Laird at the big league level and recently promoted another highly thought of prospect in Taylor Teagarden to Triple-A.

Originally signed by the Atlanta Braves in 2002 Ramirez was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2006 for reliever Bob Wickman. Last season he was sent to Texas in exchange for outfielder Kenny Lofton.

The biggest drawback when it comes to Ramirez and playing catcher is his defense at the position.

While scouts within the organization are impressed with the skills behind the plate of Teagarden and Saltalamacchia they aren't so high on Ramirez. If Ramirez is to make the majors with the Rangers it's very likely it'll either be as a first basemen or a designated hitter.

On the season Ramirez is hitting .390 with 7 homers, 22 RBI and 21 runs scored. He has compiled a eye-popping 1.175 OPS in his 28 games with Frisco.
