In brief: when Cueto returns, who leaves?

Can you believe the number of times this poor guy has been hit? He must a walking bruise by this point. (AP Photo/Al Behrman)Last game
After sweeping the series with the Cubs, the Reds lost the series opener against the Braves last night, 7-4.
Bronson Arroyo had another rough start, giving up 4 runs (earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks through 5.0 innings. Alfredo Simon pitched 2 innings of hitless relief, but Logan Ondrusek gave the Braves their winning margin: 3 runs (earned) on 3 hits and 1 walk in the eighth. It was too late by the time J. J. Hoover closed it out without a hit.
Zack Cozart’s ears must have been burning, because he suddenly pulled out a 2-hole worthy performance, going 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored.
Next game
The Reds try to even the record against the Braves tonight. It’s the hot-hitting Homer Bailey (RHP, 1-3, 3.38 ERA) tonight against Kris Medlen (RHP, 1-4, 3.38 ERA). First pitch at 7:10 p.m.

Bryce Harper’s FOX Saturday Baseball Game of the Week Homer off “Everyday” Alfredo Simon

Alfredo Simon is the guy the Reds toss into the game to eat innings. His stats don’t really matter. When opposing batters are facing him, it’s time to make up for lost time in a hurry. Hitters are going to get pitches to hit, and they’re going to get an opportunity for three or four innings to pad their stats.
Except on this particular pitch, Alfredo Simon didn’t make a bad pitch. It’s just that Bryce Harper flicked his wrists at the ball and hit it into the bullpen in right field.

The ball was down and in on Harper. It was a little bit similar to Harper’s first triple of the season last night off Homer Bailey. You’re not really supposed to be able to do these things with a pitch that’s in on you like that. Unless you’re Bryce Harper, and you’ve got the quickest hands in the world.
The Nationals won the game 6-3, their third in a row over the Reds. Bryce Harper has his team on his back right now. Also, this was Harper’s first homer off a suspected...

Simon Hopes for Same, for a Change

One year ago Alfredo Simon’s past was one of incredible change and his future was uncertain when the Reds picked him up off of waivers a couple of days before starting their regular season. He was a nice surprise in their 2012 bullpen and now they are hoping for more of the same from the 31 year-old right-hander who recently helped his native Dominican Republic to a WBC championship.

Reds agree to deals with Heisey and Simon

The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to one-year contracts with outfielder Chris Heisey and right-hander Alfredo Simon, avoiding arbitration.

Heisey will make $1,325,000 and Simon will earn $890,000. The deals were announced by the Reds on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Heisey batted .265 with seven homers and 31 RBIs in 120 games for the Reds last season. It was a considerable drop-off for Heisey: In 2011, his second year in the majors, he also appeared in 120 games but hit 18 homers in 68 fewer at-bats.

Simon, 31, went 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 36 relief appearances in his first year with the Reds after parts of four seasons in Baltimore.

Cincinnati still has four players in arbitration: pitchers Homer Bailey, Mat Latos, Mike Leake and outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.

The moves leave the Reds with four unsigned arbitration eligible players in Homer Bailey, Shin-Soo Choo, Mat Latos and Mike Leake.
Reds avoid arbitration with Heisey, Simon

The Reds tweeted on their official account that OF Chris Heisey and RHP Alfredo Simon have both agreed to one-year deals with the club for 2013. By doing so, they avoid having to go to arbitration, leaving Homer Bailey, Mat Latos, Mike Leake, and Shin-Soo Choo as the players left with whom the Reds have not yet come to terms.

Heisey signed for one year at $1.325 million, according to Mark Sheldon on Twitter. The terms of Simon's contract were not immediately available.

Logan Ondrusek was the other player who was arbitration eligible, but he signed a two-year deal on January 17th.

The Reds’ old pine cup

Alfredo Simon celebrates the Reds’ winning of the 2012 National League Central division by dousing himself from the pine cup.
On the night the Cincinnati Reds clinched the National League Central division, you may have seen some images of players with a brass cup during the celebration, including Alfredo Simon and Bronson Arroyo. Everyone was gathered around it at some point.
The Cincinnati Reds partied in the clubhouse following their 2012 NL Central win.At first, I thought it was an official trophy for winning first place. While I didn’t remember ever seeing anything like that in past years, I assumed it was something new. Until yesterday’s article from Mark Sheldon about the cup. The cup is the player’s own invention and sprung from not winning the Ohio Cup against the Cleveland Indians.
“We were 3-0 in Cincinnati. Each day we came to the ballpark in Cleveland, we were trying to get the Ohio Cup,â€* Reds left fielder Ryan Ludwick explained on Friday. “Day 1, we didnâ...

As the Oriole roster is starting to take shape, they made yet another move last night. Alfredo Simon, who has been a mainstay of the pitching staff for the past few years has been put on waivers. Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said the waiver process is confidential and confirmed in a text message that Simon is "on the roster." Technically, that is true.
Alfredo Simon Getting a Payday

Alfredo Simon was acquitted of an involuntary murder charge in the Dominican Republic. As you probably remember, Simon was accused of shooting a man during a New Year's Eve celebration about 11 months ago. At the time, I thought that was the last we would see of Simon in an Oriole uniform. Evidently, I was wrong as he appeared in 23 games for Baltimore in 2011 (including 16 starts) and was one of the better starters for the O's late in the season. But that's not why I wrote this blurb. It was because of this phrase that caught my eye and gave me a good chuckle:According to local news website gentetuya.com, Simon is expected to sign a $12 million contract with the Orioles. That, on first blush is a completely laughable concept. According to Cot's Contracts, Simon isn't even eligibile for arbitration until 2013. Why would you sign him to any contract before then? They never did this to, say, Jeremy Guthrie. Why take that risk? Now, Simon was (a bit surprisingly) worth ...

Orioles RHP Simon acquitted of involuntary manslaughter charge

Baltimore Orioles righthander Alfredo Simon has been acquitted of an involuntary manslaughter charge on Tuesday.
Experts testified in the Dominican Republic that the fatal bullet did not come from Simon's gun during a New Year Eve's shooting of Michel Castillo Almonte, 25.
No witnesses have claimed to have seen Simon fire the gun. He was facing up to two years in prison if convicted.
The 30-year-old Simon made 23 appearances - 16 starts - for the Orioles this past season, posting a 4-9 record and 4.90 ERA.

Orioles' Simon acquitted in shooting death

Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon has been acquitted of an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Defense attorney Dinora Dilone said Simon was acquitted Tuesday in the New Year's Eve shooting death of 25-year-old Michel Castillo Almonte.

Dilone says experts testified that the fatal bullet did not come from Simon's gun and that no witnesses saw the pitcher fire his weapon.

The victim's family had previously dropped a lawsuit against Simon, but the public prosecutor still pursued the case. It was not clear whether the prosecutor planned to appeal.

Simon faced up to two years in prison if convicted.
