UW Huskies who must lead by example in 2013

Is it football season yet?
The Washington Huskies spring game has come and gone, leaving football fans anxious for the 2013 season. The problem is, we still have just over 4 months before the season opener against Boise State. After getting a small glimpse of what fans can look forward to next season, it has left us all with a yearning that football comes back sooner than later.
While we wait, though, there are lots of developments to be made. Will the team get ravaged by injuries again before the season even begins?
Will an incoming freshman come in and impress his way into the starting lineup? Will there be more off field incidents that affect any other starters?
Most importantly, though, is who will this season’s leaders be? The role changes each season, so it can be hard to gauge. Especially on a talent-rich, upper-classmen filled squad.
Here are 5 Huskies who must lead by example this season.

Shaq to try out for the Red Sox...again

Of course you didn't think I meant this Shaq, did you?

According to Alex Speier, University of Washington defensive back Shaq Thompson has been invited back to Red Sox camp during his school's spring break. Thompson, a standout high school athlete from California, was drafted in the 18th round of the 2012 draft by the Sox, despite not having played baseball in six years.

Teams take late round flyers on exceptional athletes all the time; the real reason Sox fans might remember Shaq is because in 39 Spring Training at bats last year, he went hit less, with 37 strikeouts. After a taste of major league baseball that couldn't have been any bitter, and a standout freshman year on the gridiron (Thompson is a potential All-American), what brings back Shaq?

“I was thinking baseball is something I want to keep pursuing, come back here with these great guys I played with, great personalities [who are] fun to be around. They make you laugh everyday,” said Thompson. “I just really...

Shaq Thompson, Red Sox Prospect Who Went 0-For-39 With 37 Strikeouts, Returning to Baseball This Summer

Shaq Thompson may have gone 0-for-39 with 37 strikeouts last season with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox in rookie ball, but that doesn’t mean he’s given up on the sport.
Thompson, who also played cornerback, safety and linebacker for the 2012 Washington Huskies, will be returning to the Red Sox this spring and summer. Thompson told the Seattle Times he will travel to Florida this weekend to begin his 2013 season in minor league training camp with the Red Sox. Between football and school, Thompson will only be able to play baseball for weeks at a time.
“I’ll just continue to go every week or so, every time we get off [from football],” Thompson said. “We talked about it. We’ve got it scheduled out, so we’ll see how it goes.”
Thompson was an 18th-round pick for the Red Sox in 2012. He got a $45,000 signing bonus and can make up to $100,000 if he plays four years. Thompson walked eight times last season, drove in a run and stole a base.
Thompson will also be going through a position swit...

Five positions Washington needs to upgrade in 2013

Take the next step!
The 2012 Washington Huskies football season saw dramatic depth chart upheaval, for the better and for the worse. Tailback Bishop Sankey came out of nowhere to solidify the running back position as one of the team’s strengths.
But injuries exposed a lack of depth and experience on the offensive line.
Starting all over the field as a freshman, Shaq Thompson did everyone for the Huskies defensively.
But graduation left Washington’s receiving corp depleted and shallow after losing Austin Seferian-Jenkins. After an audit, it’s clear Washington needs to fix up five positions in particular.
Defensive Line
Injuries killed Washington on both sides of the trenches. Defensive tackle is a position Washington needs to upgrade. The loss of senior Talia Crichton, a disruptive backfield force, in particular will be felt.
The Huskies will look at to-be junior Danny Shelton to lead a unit that struggled to impact the game at times this season.
Offensive Line
Same story as the D-line here for the Huski

Cougs upset Dawgs 31-28.
As all Washington Huskies fans will know…ugh…just ugh.
Love ‘Em
Kasen Williams
One of the bright spots of the day was Kasen Williams’ eight catches for 83 yards. He consistently makes ridiculously athletic grabs and is very difficult to be brought down by just one defender.
He almost always breaks the first tackle and gets extra yards after the catch.
A great performance following a solid season.
Shaq Thompson
I haven’t given a specific shoutout all season to the truly outstanding Shaq Thompson who has been a big part of the new-look defense all season. As a linebacker, cornerback, safety, or truly wherever the team needed him, Thompson has been a stud week in and week out.
His huge hit on Teondray Caldwell at the four yard line saved a touchdown for the Huskies.
Erik Folk
I sure miss this guy. I really, really miss this guy.

Week 10 game balls: Washington vs. Cal Golden Bears

The streak is over!
The Washington Huskies headed to Cal on Friday night with a big weight on their shoulders. That weight was more than just the game itself as it held much more importance than just a very crucial conference win. The Huskies were mired in a big road losing streak and an embarrassing streak of giving up 50+ points in their last 6 road games…all losses.
The Dawgs had a chance to erase all of that and to put themselves back on the right track to finish this season strong. And they did, 21-13.
As usual, the Huskies made some mistakes in the game and definitely need to work on some things.
This week, though, is about celebration.
Let’s hand out some game balls!
Offensive
Bishop Sankey
Week after week, Bishop Sankey impresses me more and more. While he has a completely different running style than Chris Polk did, Sankey is doing his best impression and filling the shoes well. Not known as a physical back, Sankey has slowly changed his game to match each week’s defense.

Five Washington Huskies who must impress vs. Oregon Saturday night

Duck hunting
The Washington Huskies started their Pac-12 gauntlet last week, knocking off Stanford in a big upset victory in Seattle on the big stage. This week, they do it again in primetime, against the Oregon Ducks. The Dawgs will be traveling to Eugene to take on our arch nemesis, the Pondsquatters in the second of three brutal games to start off their conference schedule.
Fans of Washington saw a whole different team last week then we were used to seeing and would like them to come out this week the same way.
This year’s Ducks team is not like what we have seen in the recent past. They still have the big play offense and explosive capability, but they look more beatable then years past.
It’s going to take some big plays and composure from the Huskies, but if players step up like they did last week, the Huskies can compete in and win this game.
Here are 5 Huskies who need to impress in order to help defeat Oregon.

Pick 6: Big players in big games

The national championship race will clear up some this weekend with five games involving ranked teams, plus No. 9 Notre Dame playing an improving Miami team.

Keep an eye on these six players. They could be the difference in who wins the week's biggest games.

---

No. 23 Washington at No. 2 Oregon

Huskies S Shaq Thompson. The freshman safety has been used as a nickelback, but at 6-foot-2, 215-pounds, he's almost an undersized linebacker. He was second on the team in tackles in last week's victory against Stanford, and is the type of athlete that gives Washington the versatility to slow down the Ducks, whose playmakers come in various shapes and sizes, but only one speed - fast.

---

No. 4 LSU at No. 10 Florida

Gators C Jon Harrison. The junior center is the anchor of a line that has become the focal point of Florida's power running game. The Gators are third in the SEC at 224 yards per game. The Tigers allow 83 yards per game, and pushing around DTs Anthony Johnson and Bennie Logan is toug

Week 3 College football preview: Portland St. vs. Washington matchup

Back to the drawing board
The Washington Huskies are still licking their chops after the flattening they received last week at LSU coming into this week’s matchup with Portland State. Last week was atrocious and reminded many Husky fans of last season. With all that being said, though, it’s time to look ahead to Saturday’s game against the Vikings.

Game Notes
As previously mentioned, the Huskies suffered a humiliating loss at #3 LSU last week. The 41-3 game was a reminder that this Husky team still has a lot of work to do to compete on the big stage. The injury situation hasn’t helped, either, with the team losing several starters already this year.

Week 2 College football preview: Washington vs. LSU matchup

Down in the bayou
The Washington Huskies got an important week 1 victory over the San Diego Aztecs to start the year off on a good note. Their week 2 opponent, though, is going to give them a lot more trouble than they faced last week.
The Huskies are heading to the bayou of Louisiana to take on the #3 ranked LSU Tigers.
While the Huskies had a poor showing for their high expectations, they are looking to step it up a few notches this week to compete with their SEC powerhouse opponent.

Game Notes
While the Huskies had a disappointing scoring output in week 1, the defense looked improved from last season despite giving up 199 yards rushing in the game. In fact, the 2 SDSU touchdowns allowed shouldn’t have been touchdowns at all.

It's Here: National Signing Day!

Most up to date news: https://twitter.com/calbearblog

-As of 3:00PM PST
