Kyle Kendrick pitches his second complete game of 2013, and a red-hot Dom Brown crushes his league leading seventeenth home run, as the Phils beat the fish, 7-2.

The Phils increase their winning streak to two games as Kyle Kendrick pitches his second complete game of the season and Domonic Brown crushes his league leading seventeenth home run, as the Phils sink the Marlins, 7-2.
The Marlins took the lead in the top of the third as, with two men on, and with one man out, Derek Dietrich hits an RBI single, knocking in Juan Pierre, who had earlier singled, then moved up to second base on Ed Lucas’ walk, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead, while sending Lucas, who had just walked, over to third base. The Marlins then took a 2-0 lead as the next batter, Marcell Ozuna, hits an RBI single, scoring Lucas, while sending Dietrich up to second base. The Phils cut the Marlins’ lead in half in the bottom of the fifth as Erik Kratz hits a lead-off home run, his seventh home run of the season, making it a 2-1 Marlins’ lead. The Phils tied the game up at one-all three batters later as, with a runner on third, and with the Marlins’ infield in to try to stop the t...

About Last Night: All-Star Game push for Domonic Brown, Kendrick begins now

The Philadelphia Phillies currently have four all stars on the roster, the way I see it, and two of them put on a show last night in a victory over the Miami Marlins. Kyle Kendrick and Domonic Brown are having years worthy of all-star recognition and if they can keep producing at the level they have so far, they should absolutely be in the running for an all-star spot representing the National League. The four all-stars I see on the Phillies right now are Brown, Kendrick, Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon.

Let's start with Brown, who has become must-see television in not just Philadelphia but around Major League Baseball. The two-time NL Player of the Week and last month's Player of the Month did it again last night with another home run launched in to the stands in Citizens Bank Park. He currently leads the National League with 17 home runs -- three more than Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez and Atlanta's B.J. Upton -- and his 42 RBIs is in the top five in the league ...

Kendrick, Cahill get the nod

Start 'Em

Kyle Kendrick (MIA, @MIL)

Back-to-back bruisings from the Reds (eight hits, four walks, four runs in six innings on May 18) and Nationals (eight hits, four walks, five runs in five innings of work on May 24) did a number on his season figures. Yet, aside from those unfavorable soirees, Kendrick has been one of the better performers in the National League, holding the opposition to two runs or less in eight of 11 outings this spring. Though they are showing signs of life, the Marlins remain last in baseball in runs scored, and Milwaukee's lineup ranks near the bottom half in most relevant offensive categories. Look for Kendrick to use this platform to shine this week.

Andy Pettitte (CLE, @SEA)

A matchup with the Indians, a top-10 offense, wouldn't seem conducive to a strong showing for any hurler, let alone one coming off the disabled list like Pettitte. However, the venerable Pinstripes pitcher held Cleveland to a lone run in seven innings of work on April 9. Any apprehension owne

MLB Umpire’s Blown Call on Pickoff Attempt Pushes Phillies to Victory Over Brewers (Video)

Somewhere, robot umpires are watching this MLB season laughing maniacally.
It hasn’t been a strong first two months for human umpires, and another blown call on Saturday seriously impacted the Brewers-Phillies matchup. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick was leading off at second base while Philadelphia was trailing 4-3 with one out. Brewers reliever Francisco Rodriguez swung around and threw to Jean Segura to pick off Kendrick. Segura dove at Kendrick and got his glove on the pitcher’s chest, but there was something missing — the ball.
Kendrick was called out anyway by second base umpire Mike Estabrook and Segura helped his case by picking the ball off the dirt and showing it to the ump. There was no argument from Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel.
Cesar Hernandez doubled directly after, which would have driven Kendrick home from second base. Michael Martinez grounded out to Segura to end the game.

Kendrick Struggles in Loss to Nats

Kyle Kendrick was out of sync all night (PHOTO: AP)
Kyle Kendrick struggled for the second straight outing on Friday night, and the Phillies dropped the first of their three game series with the Nationals, 5-2. Kendrick and the defense had a very tough time in the fifth inning, giving up four runs in that frame alone. The inning started off with a Bryce Harper single, and the scoring began with an RBI triple by Adam Laroche, followed by an RBI single by Kurt Suzuki, and a 2 RBI double by Steve Lombardozzi. The Phillies runs came from an RBI single by Domonic Brown and a sac fly by Erik Kratz.
STRUGGLING KENDRICK
Kendrick’s line was 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4BB, 1 K. That’s two straight starts where he gave up at least four runs, bringing his era up to 3.29. His defense didn’t do him any favors tonight, but he did struggle with his command, and didn’t miss many bats. This isn’t a good sign for the Phillies, because Kendrick has been arguably their best pitcher so far this year, and two str...

Behind A Sensational Kendrick, Phils Beat Giants For Second Straight Night

Kyle Kendrick purses his lips for his haters during another brilliant start. (Photo: AP)
What a difference a flight out west makes.
When the Phillies arrived in San Francisco yesterday, they had been in a rut, dropping two straight to the lowly Miami Marlins, including an embarrassing 14-2 loss on Sunday. Now, for a second straight night, they got a dominant performance from their starting pitcher on the way to a victory. This time, Kyle Kendrick was the responsible party, easily dispatching the Giants lineup in a 6-2 victory that never seemed in doubt.
CYLE KENDRICK

Coming into tonight’s game, Kendrick led Phillies starters with a 2.43 ERA. Dating back to July 1, his ERA is a pristine 2.57. He’s been dubbed the team’s stopper–albeit with a tongue in cheek connotation–for a reason. He’s pitched like a true ace. Combine his recent run of success with his 1.89 career ERA when facing the Giants–his lowest against any National League opponent–and his final line would be no surprise: 7....

Kendrick Leads Phillies to 7-2 Win Over Miami

After a disappointing two-game series in Cleveland, the Phillies quickly put it behind them and battled past the Marlins, 7-2, on Thursday night.
KENDRICK BATTLES FOR A WIN

-After 96 pitches, 67 of them for strikes, in seven innings, Kyle Kendrick’s night was complete. He allowed seven hits and two walks, but kept the damage to a minimum by giving up just the two runs to the Marlins. Kendrick added five strikeouts.
-What Kendrick has done a solid job of all season is keeping runners on base. His strand rate coming into the game was 85 percent, 7th best in the National League. That number went up, as Kendrick left runners on base in the second, third, and fourth innings without allowing any damage on the scoreboard. In the third, he held the bases loaded, and that ability to keep teams from scoring in tight situations has catapulted him into a new stratosphere as a starting pitcher.
-Although his line was solid, Kendrick was lucky to come away with this sort of performance. What the...

No smoke and mirrors: Kyle Kendrick is the real deal

Like a father watching his son ride a bike on his own for the first time, I am super proud of Kyle Kendrick and you should be, too. Or, as Jim Salisbury put it, "Kyle Kendrick has become a man."

The ups and downs in Kendrick's career are like a bike ride through the Appalachian Trail: minor leaguer-turned major leaguer-turned playoff starter in 2007; major leaguer in 2008-turned minor leaguer in 2009-turned major leaguer in 2010; reliever-turned starter-turned reliever-turned starter in 2011 and 2012; and a fake trade for Kobayashi thrown in for good measure.

And here is the latest twist: after last night's complete game shutout, Kendrick's 2.41 ERA is the best on the staff...and it didn't come from nowhere...

The numbers are impressive:

Giving Kendrick His Due

One of the toughest aspects of both being a fan and providing accurate analysis is separating perception from reality. Fans tend to anchor their opinions of a player early on, holding steadfastly to that perception even after the player improves or declines. This holds especially true for fans of a specific team, who watch the same players routinely and have difficulty acknowledging legitimate changes in their games.

Philadelphia Phillies: 2013 ERA for the NL East at game 20

Most staffs typically have a significant drop-off after their 1 and 2, but the Philadelphia Phillies with Kyle Kendrick have a strong 4. How do other divisional teams fare at the back end of their rotation?

Please go to my author archives or the Phillies page for my most recent coverage. Scroll down to Tal’s Handy Links at the bottom. Thank you.
