Another day and another starter struggles, I hope they get it all out of their systems in spring training otherwise we won't need our vaunted bullpen. It sure is quite a statement when the guy called inventory at the start of spring is now pitching like the second best starter on the team. Johan Santana looks brilliant and Livan Hernandez keeps chugging ( seemed like a fitting adjective) along but the rest of the rotation is all over the place. Carlos Muniz was a standout collegiate closer who dominated the lower levels of the minors. But at 27 y/o with less then 30 major league appearances ( ERA 5.63) and a high 3 ERA in AAA last year, you have to wonder whether he will make as a major league reliever. While Luis Ayala was giving me agita trying to get the last out of what had become too close a game, Al Reyes was closing out a game in Binghamton. For Reyes it was his third scoreless inning in as many games and his first save. While Ayala showed a lot of resilience to finish off the game I would rather have Reyes experience closing until Wagner returns.... The Zephyrs had several pitchers throwing that could be considered for call-ups. Jon Niese in his warn-up for Tuesday night's start...

For those who say Jon Niese is reaching his max. innings for the year and should be shut down at the end of the Zephyrs season instead of starting his service time early, his last two outings would support that argument. The Mets designated Claudio Vargas for assignment after last night disgraceful 11-0 loss to the lowly Seattle Mariners. Carlos Muniz was recalled to take his spot on the roster.
