Packers Lead 49ers 23-3 At Halftime

Green Bay has outgained the 49ers, 362 yards to 57, on their way to a 23-3 halftime lead at Lambeau Field.

The Packers moved the ball well on their first two possessions, driving inside San Francisco's 10-yard line both times with the help of some big plays, a season-long 26-yard run from running back Ryan Grant on the first series and a 37-yard reception from wide receiver Greg Jennings on the second. But each time they were forced to settle for field goals from Mason Crosby.

After enough requests, now seemed as good a time as any to roll out a Greg Manusky Approval Rating poll. We don't have a graphic for it yet, but I'll work on that.
For those who didn't know, Football Outsiders posts weekly DVOA ratings for offenses and defenses, and the 49ers are second in the NFL in total defensive DVOA. They stand third agai...

49ers 10 - Bears 6: A clinic in not finishing

The 49ers basically showed they could "finish" twice in yesterday's game. Of course they finished the game with Michael Lewis's interception to clinch the game. They also finished after Tarell Brown's interception return, when Frank Gore plowed into the end zone on the first play of the subsequent drive for a 14-yard touchdown run. The series leading up to the game-clinching interception was pretty rough, but they did manage to finish the game there...

49ers 10 - Bears 6: Postgame Notes and Quotes

As hideous as much of this game may have seemed, there is of course a whole assortment of random notes to ponder related to the interceptions:

The 49ers defense registered 5 interceptions against the Bears. It was the first time a 49ers team notched at least 5 interceptions since September 14, 1997, vs. New Orleans (6 interceptions).
It marked the first time since September 7, 1986, at Tampa Bay, that five di...

Only the appropriate post-game quotes

As the press corps was waiting in the tunnel outside the 49ers' locker room, George Devine Jr. of Fox Sports Radio was speaking with another reporter. He observed that Cutler had five interceptions and could've had two more because he "lollipopped" a couple of other passes.

Well, as luck would have it, Cutler was squeezing past Devine on his way to a post-game interview. Cutler heard the remark and suggested Devine do something that - to my knowledge - is anatomically...

Singletary tunes out Willis, turns to Goldson on the dot

SANTA CLARA – This just in: Patrick Willis is not perfect.
The two-time Pro Bowl linebacker had been calling the defensive plays for the 49ers, a duty that comes with a radio receiver inside his helmet so that coaches can communicate with him as well as a lime green dot on the top of his helmet so that officials know which player has the receiver.
On Wednesday, coach Mike Singletary said the green dot would now go to safety Dashon Goldson. Singletary had said earlier in the week that c...

Golden Nuggets: Curse the bye week

Hey there folks, welcome to the Golden Nuggets, where I am in complete denial to both the 49ers loss last Sunday and the fact that the team doesn't have a game this week. I'm in complete football overdrive and I keep forgetting, over and over that we do not have a game on Sunday. I suppose the links tonight will set me straight since I'm anticipating only have a few for you. I suppose it'll feel a bit like the offseason--if you've been here long you'll know what I ...

As a primer, check out Trent Green's breakdown of the play on the NFL Network.

Safety Mark Roman was the closest defender on the play, but he hinted strongly that it was not his responsibility. The 49ers were playing a four-deep zone. From the quarterback's vantage point, Shawntae Spencer was responsible for the left-quarter of the end zone, with Dashon Goldson responsible for the left-middle, Roman for the right-middle, and Nate Clements for the right c...
