From Matt Maiocco 49ers announce 20 cuts to get to 53-man limit The 49ers reduced their roster to the 53-man limit just minutes ago, but that does not mean everybody with the team today will still be here on Sunday. The 49ers released T Jacob Bender, T Alex Boone, WR Dobson Collins, DL Pannel Egboh, TE J.J. Finley, CB Eric Green, OL Kyle Howard, CB Terrail Lambert, FB Brit Miller, NT/OT Khalif Mitchell, LB Jay Moore, TE Bear Pascoe, WR Maurice Price, FB Bill Rentmeester, LB Justin Roland, RB Kory Sheets, OL Matt Spanos, OL Joe Toledo, LB Mark Washington and WR Dominique Zeigler. Lot’s of surprises. 1) The one sure to have the fans upset is Kory Sheets. Sheets an undrafted rookie looked fantastic during pre-season/training camp. However lets face the facts; he was behind Gore, Coffe and Robinson…carries were going to be sparse. Secondly Thomas Clayton looked great every off-season that success never carried to the NFL. Hopefully he’ll slip through waivers and join the practice squad. 2) The bigger surprise to me was that Pascoe, Finley, and Miller were cut. I don’t buy that a team that says it’s committed to running the ball would only keep two tight ends and one fullback. Especially when you consider that Delanie Walker is more of a WR then tight end. I can guarantee the Niners are looking to find someone on waivers. 3) The cuts of Bender, Boone, Toledo and Spanos leave the Niners painfully think along the offensive line. By my count they only have 8 offensive lineman on the roster (Staley, Baas, Heitman, Richal, Synder, Wragge, Sims, Wallace.) Again expect a waiver pickup. The point of the preseason it not to win games. It's to evaluate the thirty or so players teams bring in to compete for the final 10 spots of the roster hoping to find the next Tom Brady . With roster cuts to 75 players on the 25th and 53 on August 30th some players only have one last opportunity to show what they can do. Herm Edwards stated last week he knows who 45 or 47 of his 53 players are going to be. The open competition at almost every position the Chiefs opened camp with has been closing rapidly. These players are close to securing a spot on the roster but will have to play well against the Dolphins to make this squad. Dead men walking 1. B.J. Sams: Does not have the explosion and speed he used to have when he was a Pro Bowler. Has not made a play all preseason and has been out played by Dontrell Savage. The only thing that could stop Sams from getting cut is taking a kick to the end zone more than once versus the Dolphins. 2. Chris Manderino: Was only brought in as insurance in case Chan Gailey's FB Mike Cox was a bust. Unfortunately for Chris, Mike Cox has been very impressive and he already knows the playbook inside and out coming from Gailey's system at Georgia tech. 3 John Paul Foschi: Another player Gailey brought from GT. The Chiefs are too stacked at TE for him to be on the final 53 but his ties to Gailey could land him on the practice squad. Foschi would need a injury to stay alive. 4. Bobby Sippio: The coaching staff will not have as big of a issue cutting Sippio as the fans will. He just does have anything going in his favor. He does not fit in their youth movement and he is slow and Maurice Price has started to pull away from the competition. Need to show something The move back to linebacker proved to be very beneficial for Hoyte, who was buried on the depth chart at FB. Hoyte has made some plays at LB and drew Gunther Cuningham's praise. His job is not finished he will have to standout on Thursday. Especially on special teams. 1.Oliver Hoyte: 2. Derek Lokey: "Low to the Earth" type of player with a non stop motor. Deffensive tackle will be a hard position to bust through on. Since Turk McBride decided he is the reincarnation of Neil Smith, Alphonso Boone is enabled to go back to DT where he is more comfortable. That hurts Lokey's chances. 3.Connar Barth: Connar is right in the mix at the kicker position but he is starting to fall behind the pace being set by Nick Novak. Barth needs to get a couple kicks in the end zone and a couple more thru the up rights to be on this team for the following game. So close they can taste it 1. Johnny Dingle: Dingle had one sack and disrupted a couple more plays against the Cardinals. Dingle has had a good buzz around him all camp long. A lot like fellow rookie Derek Lokey his spot on the team could be determined by what position Alphonso Boone plays. 2.Dontrell Savage: The Chiefs were content with going one extra at receiver. As long as that extra returned kicks. B.J. Sams is getting cut. Kevin Robinson is injured. Now the Chiefs will go one extra at RB and keep 5 Receivers. Savage will force his way on board.

Chiefs vs. Cardinals: What to Watch For

Last week the Chiefs beat the Bears. It was important even if it was a preseason game, the Chiefs had not won any kind of game exhibition or other wise for nine months. This week the story line will be more about who can play well enough to separate themselves from the pack and try to make this team. A lot of players came from the bottom of the depth chart to make a name for their self against the Bears like Dantrell Savage, Bobby Sippio and Maurice Price but they will have to come out and play lights out consecutive weeks to prove it was no fluke. The receiver competition has pushed Sippio and Price's game to the next level they are both operating like only one of them will make this team and will be trying to one up each other versus the red birds. If they continue to play insane good it could be Jeff Webb who gets the pink slip Webb played ok in his first game and has done fine in training camp but has not wowed like other receivers. One thing that may save Webb is he is a Bill Kuharick draft pick and it makes Bill look better the more of his draft picks make the team. Gunther Cunningham has been exploring this week with the 3-3-5 defense. In this defense the main rusher is a line backer called "The Falcon" Derrick Thomas manned that position when the Chiefs used this defense under Gunther's previous time in K.C. So far the results have been positive the Chiefs deployed Damario Williams in this role and he dominated Damion Mcintosh. Also Turk McBride has been getting reps with the first team at DE if he can fill that spot then Boone can move back to DT and the Chiefs interior rotation could be a lot deeper. Damon Huard and Tyler Thigpen played well enough last week to stop the Chiefs from taking a flyer on Chad Pennington. The next two weeks these QB'S will have a Chris Simms shaped cloud hanging over their perspective heads. Simms will be let go in the next 14 days by the Bucs and has taken a team to the playoffs in his brief career and if the Chief's quarterbacks let their play slip Simms could land in K.C. Huard in particular needs to play well. This year the tie breaker on cuts will be age. If Dantrell Savage lights up the Cards like he did the Bears don't expect to see him in game three or four. The Chiefs know what three running backs they will keep and they know if Savage plays well in all four preseason games they won't be able to cut him and put him on the practice squad. If I were Napolean Harris I would be worried about my job security. Kansas City might not be able to cut him because of salary cap issues but since he was demoted he has been hurt and not able to get reclaim his spot. Harris probably won't play against the Cardinals and will be one week closer to starting the season on the bench.

Chiefs Start Preseason w/ 24-20 Victory in Chicago

In their first preseason game of the year the Chiefs beat the Bears 24-20. The Chiefs scored three touchdowns. They scored four all of last preseason. More importantly the Chiefs got to see their young players in live game action and a majority of them rose to the occasion . During the first drive of the game Brodie Croyle led the Chiefs down the field on a 16 play drive 81 yard drive. The drive chewed up more than eight minutes off the clock and culminated with a Larry Johnson touchdown. Croyle went 6 for 10 passing and 5 for 5 on third down and looked every bit the leader of this team. Defensively the Chiefs starters looked solid but not spectacular and seemed to still have some of the tackling problems that have plagued them the past couple of seasons. The starters kept the Bears out of the end zone but it is the worst offense they will see all season.. Early in the second quarter Damon Huard came on in relief of Brodie and after shaking off some early rust Huard showed why he is still on this team. Huard went 6 for 8 passing, 77 yards and hit Maurice Price for a 8 yard touchdown that capped a perfectly executed 2 minute drill no huddle offense. That gave the Chiefs a 14-3 lead going into half time. Huard proved he is a fighter and if he has to give up the starter position he is not going to concede the back up job. After half time Tyler Thigpen took over the reigns at quarterback and looked shaky early he did not seem comfortable in the pocket at all. The only passes he could complete were on rollouts where he could throw on the run. After Thigpen threw a interception Garret Wolfe scored for the Bears on the very next play and the wheels started to come off a little bit. The Bears went on to score another touchdown on a 13 Chris Hanie touch down pass and the Chiefs were down 17-14 going in to the fourth. Thigpen settled down in the fourth quarter leading the Chiefs down the field for a field goal to tie the game up. Chicago answered back with a field goal of their own. Down 20-17 Thigpen got the ball back with 3:19 left and the ball on his own 40 ward line. Thigpen marched his troops down the field for a 6 play scoring drive that resulted in a 27 yard touch down pass to Bobby Sippio with 1:15 left. Chicago could not score once they got the ball back and the Chiefs emerged victorious. Of the many position battles none were expected to be fiercer than wide receiver. The receivers did not disappoint Dwayne Bowe made some grabs early but then he gave way to Will Franklin who made some tough catches and looked like a legitimate NFL slot receiver. The second quarter was led by Jeff Webb grabbing 2 catches for 29 yards and Maurice Price snagging two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Not to be out done Bobby Sippio got 3 catches for 57 yards and the game winning score. Who helped themselves 1: Bobby Sippio- Game M.V.P. 2: Maurice Price- Made some catches and showed ability to use his size to get separation. 3: Jamal Charles- Showed good hands and ability to run between the tackles. 4: Dantrell Savage- Explosive back who made some big gains and showed he can play in the league. 5: Conner Barth- Made a 37 yard field goal and his kickoffs went further than Nick Novak?s by five yards. Who hurt themselves 1: Maurice Legget- Whiffed on a interception and gave up a touchdown. 2: Adrian Jones: Not effective at all and gave up a sack. 3: Patrick Surtain: Seemed a step slow and like the weak link of the secondary not like a steady veteran. 4: Tyler Thigpen: Even though he threw the game winning touchdown he did not look as crisp as Huard.

After the Chiefs play the Bears a new season will have begun and last year becomes history. The Chiefs have a lot to accomplish in preseason action but right now the Chiefs are undefeated and hope springs eternal. Who would have thought the Giants with all their in fighting and bickering would win the Super Bowl
