The Jets Are Not Getting Pacman Jones

So the typically legitimate somewhat valid news sources NY Post and Pro Football Talk have reported that the Jets are interested in the rainmaking cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones.

So why would the Jets be interested in the biggest primadonna liability in the NFL, when they just signed Pro Bowl D-Back Lito Sheppard and already have Darrelle Revis. Well they're not, If you read the fine print.

The news sources that I listed above all link to the same story - the one seen here...

A Promise From Chad Ocho Cinco to You, His Highly Disappointed Fantasy Owners

by Simon, SimonOnSports Ok Guys, I know I know that I promised you a touchdown last week and that I promised that I was going to Kiss the Star and I didn't deliver. And I know that I haven't broken 43 yards once this season nor have I caught more than 4 balls in a game. And I know that I only have one touchdown the entire season. But... boys it's gonna change this week, I promise. See we're playing the Jets and they're 2-2 so you think they don't suck. But they do. Oh ...

Biggest Disappointment: Bryan Thomas (First a wasted draft pick then a wasted extension)

Fantasy Stud: Jerricho Cotchery.

Offensive Outlook: Much improved running game (all around) thanks to Amped up blocking and Bill Callahan. Much improved passing game thanks to Brett Favre.

Rob Ryan to the Jets?

After a rough defensive season, ESPN is reporting that the Raiders will fire Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan. The Jets defense floundered much of the year under Bob Sutton. Eric Mangini took over the play calling about half way through the year and the defense improved dramatically (also in part to the maturation of Darrelle Revis and David Harris). Sutton will most likely be fired and sources say that Ryan will soon take over the position. This would be a great move for the Jets as they conti...

Kudos, Schwartz and Feinsod

While I have recently been on the topic of rookies, agents, and rookie holdouts I think it would only be fair to mention the phenomenal job by Neil Schwartz and Jonathon Feinsod in getting the newest member of the New York Jets, Darelle Revis, a monster contract.

Darrelle Revis was the No. 14 overall pick in the draft. We've heard from league insiders on both sides of the fence ??" agents and management ??" who were skeptical about the terms of his recent contract.

Said one league insider on Friday:

"According to the numbers, he'll be getting much more in every facet than Marshawn Lynch, the twelfth pick, who got a heck of a deal with Buffalo. According to your numbers, he'll be getting $11 million guaranteed on a four year deal versus $10.285 million for Lynch on a five year. And if the Jets buy back years five and six he'll get a total of $27 million guaranteed? No way it can be true. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it. If your numbers are right, [G.M.] Mike Tannenbaum should be fired on the spot." [REVIS NUMBERS ARE REAL, AND THEY'RE SPECTACULAR]

Oh, but the numbers are right.

As reported last Thursday, the base value of the package is six years, $32 million. The deal voids to four years, $16 million (with $11 million guaranteed, which includes his 2007 base salary) if Revis participates in at least 35 percent of the snaps on defense in any one season. The Jets can then buy back years five and six for $5 million and $11 million, respectively. The year-six pay can drop to $9 million or increase to $13 million or $15 million based primarily on playing time ??" but it apparently will require four Pro Bowl appearances in five years to get to the highest possible number in year six.

Said another league insider:

"So much for the Jets digging in their heels, having the player hold out, and letting the world know they weren't going to do voidable years. Can you please tell me what was accomplished?"

Still, yet another league insider views it as a win-win, since the Jets will be paying huge money to Revis only if he becomes a star. And, if he does, the contract likely will be renegotiated after three or four NFL seasons.

"You pay for three positions," said the source, "cornerback, left tackle, and quarterback. By getting the full six years, the Jets won't have to franchise Revis and [left tackle D'Brickashaw] Ferguson in the same year. So if they both work out, they'll be able to keep both of them for the long haul."

Once again this is just another example of how a controversial rookie holdout turned into riches for yet another rookie: Darelle Revis.

Jets updates

Mike Nugent gained ten pounds during the off-season and claims to already notice a difference.

Justin Miller and David Barrett continue to perform well in camp. Both were very impressive defending against the first team offense during the recent scrimmage. Something tells me, knowing Eric Mangini, these two guys will be rewarded for their outstanding camps despite the distractions surrounding a defensive back who is not there. And something else tells me Darrelle Revis' chances of having an impact on this team early in the season are dwindling every day he holds out. One might think Revis has a bunch of pro bowls under his belt or championship rings on his finger the way he is holding out.

Jets First Session Training Camp Report

Four things we didn't expect:
1.	First round pick Darrelle Revis not to be in camp. When you trade up to get an early first rounder, you need to be sure to sign him. And the Jets generally always sign their first round picks. As of the end of the first morning session he was not signed. Not much chance he's in the starting lineup against the Patriots now. Something tells me Tom Brady isn't worried either way.
2.	Cedric Houston would leave the team for personal reasons. Nothing I can find in writing states if it's temporary or permanent. Stay tuned.
3.	Pete Kendall would be at camp. His "trade or release me" demands were very clear. What is also clear ~ he is asking too much money for someone his age (34) and clearly past his prime. I looked up his pro bowl statistics. There are none. Maybe he figured out he has a good thing going. Or maybe it was the $14k a day it would have cost him to hold out.
4.	Coach Eric Mangini to show up having reportedly lost close to 50 pounds during the off-season. Maybe he attended Charlie Weis' trial and they wouldn't let him bring food into the courtroom. Good for you Coach. I just hope you aren't in better shape than everyone else in camp.
