Browns Rumors Galore: Brett Favre?!

The rumors and speculation around the Browns have been flying at full speed in the last few weeks. Trade rumors for Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn, Shaun Rogers, Braylon Edwards, etc. have been abundant as teams like the Giants, Eagles, and others have been linked in apparent deals that would send pretty much every good player out of Cleveland for garbage. For some reason (the slow news that permeates this time of the NFL year is probably a good one), Tony Grossi feels the need to sp...

Vikings Tried To Trade For Browns QB Brady Quinn

Word is the Vikings offered the Browns their 2009 and 2010 first-round draft picks for quarterback Brady Quinn, but Cleveland, after consideration, said no thanks. Economically, the deal makes sense for the Vikings in that Quinn, who is under contract for three more years after this season, already has been paid his signing bonus. With the trading deadline recently passed, the deal could be resurrected after the season and if the Browns won't relent on Quinn, they might deal QB Derek Anderson to Minnesota.

Vikings Coaching Options For 2009

So i took a look at possible QB replacements for the Vikings a few days, and here's a look at possible coaching replacements for them.

Brian Billick
He's in the broadcast booth for this year after 8 years with the Ravens. He led the Ravens to a Super Bowl win with a team built very much like the current Vikings team, though he gained his calling as an Offensive Coordinator. Coincidentally, that calling was gained with the Vikings.

Scott Linehan
Let's face it, he's not lasting into next year with the Rams, and may not even last the rest of the season. I'm not sure he's ready/able to be a Head Coach, but he's also got Vikings ties as an Offensive Coordinator under Mike Tice. If not the Head Coach, i wouldn't mind seeing him back as the O.C.

Marty Schottenheimer
I'm not sure i'm sold on Marty either, though he does have a good track record of fielding good teams. His problem has been that he can't win the big playoff/Super Bowl games. Not that that is any different from the Vikings franchise as a whole... Either way, i threw out this name for my brother...

Bill Cowher
The marquee name on this list. Cowher never said he was done coaching after retiring from the Steelers, only that he wanted to take some time off. This is his second year out of coaching, and i would imagine he would start to feel the itch again. Seeing as how Cowher is a great coach, if he decided to come back he would and should have his pick of jobs. Of any teams out there that will be looking for a new coach, it's hard to argue the Vikings wouldn't be the best option.

So there you go. If i had my picks, it'd be Bill Cowher leading a Vikings team with Derek Anderson as it's starting QB to open the 2009 season. But that's a long ways off, and a lot can happen in the meantime.

The 2008 season is still young, and the Vikings, despite being 0-2, still have a chance to have a good season. As a fan, that's all i'm focusing on for now. The rest can wait...

NFL Totals Contest

You probably saw this one coming.

Rules
There will not be any complex voting extravaganza like there was for the MLB contest. This time we'll just do it by division, so everyone will take a team from each one. It'll end up being eight picks per person instead of 10, but that's fine since 10 was a completely arbitrary number anyway.

Groups and Official Totals
Most of these are from Pinnacle, although the Packers, Jets, and Bucs are off the board there, so I got those from Carib.

New York Jets, 8
Miami Dolphins, 5.5
Buffalo Bills, 8
New England Patriots, 12.5

Pittsburgh Steelers, 9
Cincinnati Bengals, 7.5
Baltimore Ravens, 6
Cleveland Browns, 8

Houston Texans, 7.5
Jacksonville Jaguars, 10
Tennessee Titans, 8
Indianapolis Colts, 11

Kansas City Chiefs, 6
Oakland Raiders, 6.5
San Diego Chargers, 10.5
Denver Broncos, 7.5

Washington Redskins, 7.5
Dallas Cowboys, 10.5
New York Giants, 9
Philadelphia Eagles, 8.5

Detroit Lions, 6.5
Green Bay Packers, 8.5
Minnesota Vikings, 8.5
Chicago Bears, 8

New Orleans Saints, 8.5
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 8
Carolina Panthers, 7.5
Atlanta Falcons, 4.5

Seattle Seahawks, 8.5
St. Louis Rams, 6.5
Arizona Cardinals, 7.5
San Francisco 49ers, 6.5

Tiebreaker
The number of passing yards Derek Anderson has this season. If he gets hurt between now and the end of the season, I'll have to come up with something else. That would suck. There is technically no penalty for forgetting to include a tiebreaker with your entry, although I will likely never forgive you for it.

How to Enter

Once you have figured out which teams you are taking, and your tiebreaker, send your entry to vegaswatch@gmail.com. Give me some kind of name, or initals, so I can identify you when I post standings. If you could use the same info you gave for the MLB contest, that'd be ideal. There will be a monthly post updating how everyone is projected to do. The deadline to enter is 5pm on Thursday, September 4 (the Giants and Redskins play at 7pm).

Scoring
Correct selections will receive one point, incorrect selections will get zero points, and pushes will get a half point. That third one is actually pretty important, since it prevents people who have a couple pushes from getting completely screwed.

Prizes
I haven't figured it out exactly yet, but the winner will receive at least $200. There also may be a prize for the person who has the best combined score in the MLB and NFL contests.

If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments.

Derek Anderson to Miami for #1 pick?

Despite Derek Anderson's terrible performance in yesterday's meaningless Pro Bowl, there is buzz that he may be headed to Miami for the #1 overall selection. Does anyone think that Anderson's agent is wishing he would have steered clear of Honolulu the same way many prospects steer clear of the NFL Combine? If you perform well in the Pro Bowl, you've got nothing to gain because no one plays defense. The game sucks like that. But if you perform poorly... you get my point.

Derek Anderson headed for purple pastures?

"Things are apparently not going well as the Browns attempt to sign Derek Anderson to a long-term deal. According to reports, Anderson recently turned down a 3-year offer worth $16 million. The QB is looking for a five-year deal, which is longer than the Browns really want to go."

I'd love to see Derek Anderson stay in Cleveland, but a five-year deal is too long, especially with Brady Quinn waiting in the wings. If the Browns can get some draft picks out of the Vikings, they ...
