An Angry Message For The Sports Fella, From The Star Of TV's Brooklyn Bridge

Not long ago, Knicks fan Danny Lanzetta, the child lead in one of those pleasant 1990s-era CBS shows, sent Bill Simmons an e-mail debunking his Ewing Theory. Simmons ignored him. So Danny did the next best thing: He e-mailed us. And why not? Since we're now apparently a detective agency and a recruiting service, I see no reason why we can't also serve as Bill Simmons' spam filter. Here's Danny's e-mail to us: Hello Folks: I know you guys are usually big fans of Bill Simmo...

H20 Not the Way To Go In Sizable Apple

A Daily Babble Production

Allan Houston has been a
class act throughout his time in the NBA. He's a good guy whose career was
victimized by an untimely set of injuries. That he is attempting yet
another comeback to the Association is admirable. That his former team
in New York is considering obtaining his services, however, is simply
confusing.

Newsday's Alan Hahn has reported (http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/ny-sphouston075833045sep07,0,7654040.story) that Hou...

Allan Houston...another comeback?

Allan Houston retired in 2005 after spending 12 seasons with the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks. He was a two-time All Star and won a gold medal on the 2000 Olympic basketball team in Sydney. In 2007 he had microfracture surgery to repair the knees that forced him to retire. Houston is now 37 years old and his agent, Bill Strickland has been in early discussions about a training camp tryout with different teams. The Knicks open camp September 30th and there is speculation that head of player personnel, Donnie Walsh may be interested. Houston tried to make a comeback for the Knicks last fall and saw six minutes of time against the Boston Celtics in a preseason game. After the game, Houston ended his comeback try saying he was not prepared enough.

Houston first signed with the Knicks in 1996 after spending his first three seasons with the Pistons. The Kentucky native averaged a career best 22.5 points per game during the 02-03 season. However, he is best known for hitting the series clinching runner against the number one seeded Miami Heat in Game 5 of the 1999 playoffs. The franchise would make the Finals that season but eventually lost to the San Antonio Spurs. In 2001, Houston signed a six-year, $100 million dollar extension, which turned out to be one of the worst moves in team history. He became untradeable due to his eminent injuries and limited the team to make any moves because of the pressure he put on the salary cap. He was the second highest paid player in the 2006-2007 earning $20.7 million despite being out of the league. The last two years of his contract counted for a total of $40 million against the luxury tax.

Houston finished his Knick career as the 4th leading scorer in team history and ranks 10th all time with 1305 3-point field goals made. Head Coach Mike D'Antoni would favor his outside shooting and Walsh would welcome his experience, but Houston is not the same player he once was. He was never a good defender, and his limited mobility would not be a good fit in the up-tempo offense. The Knicks are currently at 15 players, which is the regulated limit right now. If he is really set on playing, he might be better suited trying for a team like the Philadelphia 76ers that needs outside shooting or exploring options overseas.

Allan Houston to the Suns?

No, not as another possible assistant coach but as a role player.

Houston, who last played in an NBA regular season game in 2005, has been working out at the US Airways Center on a regular basis lately. Apparently he is on the Suns radar and has been since April.

At least Jared Jeffries didn't have to give #20 back!

Not long after Jared Jeffries joined the New York Knicks last year as yet another one of President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas' $30 million dollar projects,
Jeffries sought out then-retired Knicks guard Allan Houston in order to request if he could use Houston's #20 for his tenure with the Knicks. Houston, humbled by the younger Jeffries request, gave this blessing.

On October 10, 2007, things got a bit interesting as the booked camp of the New York Knicks added yet another body by signing Houston to a contract. Houston, who was attempting to come back from a knee injury that forced him to retire two years earlier, had a lot of factors going against him: playing rust, stamina, and competition for a roster spot in the Knicks' final lineup.

At this point, I wondered if I would hear Jim A. Lovell's classic line, "Houston, we have a problem." This of course pertaining to whether or not Houston would again don his familiar #20.

Seven days later, Houston answered by question by sporting #7 in the Knicks drubbing against the Boston Celtics (101-61). Houston played a 6 insignificant minutes in that contest and only attempted one shot.

On the 20th of October, Houston had this prepared statement:

"While my body and my knees, in particular, feel fine, I know what is required for me to be truly effective in the NBA again, and it involves a timing and progression that would not be fair to Isiah and the Knicks right now," Houston said in a statement released by the Knicks. "With the season opening less than two weeks away, I think it is best for the team to move on without me. I appreciate the opportunity that Isiah and the Knicks have given me, and I wish the team nothing but success."

Ok?so much for that comeback attempt. Premature, but at least, Allan Houston got to go out on his own terms?with yet another contract at that!

Thanks Isiah!

IS THERE A MORE LAME COMBACK?

?maybe ever? Well, besides Evander Holyfield. But not sure if he ever left?.
The New York Knick's Allan Houston is trying to comeback after two-years of retirement and it ain't going too well so far. Yes, it is preseason. Yes, he is an older veteran who can sit the pine while the His Worshipness Isiah Thomas works schemes, etc. for younger dudes, but the man has two-year rust. Classic "hanger on" example in professional sports. Now it appears he won't even make the team.
