What does free agency have in store for the Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Nashville Predators, and St. Louis Blues? What can the Blue Jackets do to become a legitimate contender in the West? Can Detroit strengthen their already loaded lineup? Will this be the year the young Blackhawks make the big leap forward?

With free agency starting on July 1st, the Nashville Predators are wasting no time trying to lock up their own.
Ellis hanging in tough

The reason why Nashville was in game 5 was Dan Ellis. He might be the reason why the Predators might be in the series. Hell, he might even be the reason they made the playoffs in the first place. In game 5 against Detroit, Ellis saw 54 shots and made 52 saves in a 2-1 OT loss. This was after Ellis made 39 saves in a game 4 win. After losing many key players from last season's 110 point season, it has been Ellis' contribution this year that has all the fans singing in Nashville.

Wings get some Luck

The Red Wings have had some luck in their first round series against Nashville. In the opening minute of the second period of Saturday's game, Nicklas Lidstrom scored Detroit's 2nd goal but it could have easily been called back because Tomas Holmstrom interfered with Nashville goalie Dan Ellis. Then the Wings scored the winning goal when Kris Draper bounced the puck off a Predator skate past Ellis a few minutes later in the second period. Even if the Wings get passed the Pred's, which looks very likely, I think they will have a hard time against any other team in the West. They are just too banged up, too old, and aren't as strong as their President's trophy would suggest.

Red Wings drop Predators 3-1

Detroit out played Nashville in both ends of the ice. The Predators played strong for about the first half of the first period and then started turning over the puck. The Predators were having trouble getting the puck out of their zone and when they did manage to gain the Detroit zone cycled very well but only managed 20 shots for three periods of action.

Ellis struggles, Pred's still alive though

Dan Ellis must have an evil twin lurking around the Nashville Predators locker room. Last week he was voted the NHL's second star due to him stopping all 79 shots in a home at home series against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Then he can have a game like tonight where he let in 3 goals on the first 7 shots he faced and was pulled in favor of Chris Mason. This wasn't the first time it seemed like Ellis just didn't bother to show up. A few weeks ago he let in 3 goals on 8 shots and was pulled against the Capitals. Ellis has played well for the most part of the year but with every game meaning so much for his team he can't afford another let down with the playoffs looming around the corner.
