Possible Detroit Red Wings Offseason Plans

The 2013 Detroit Red Wings team struggled through injuries all year. Â They had the most missed games because of injury in the entire NHL, and still managed to take Chicago to the brink in round 2.
I’ve generated a few scenarios for the Red Wings offseason and I’ll let you know which one I would do if I was in Kenny Holland’s shoes.  Holland has a tough job this summer with the salary cap dropping to $64.3 Million and a lot of young players to re-sign.  My initial thoughts though are that Ken Holland won’t change the lineup and will merely re-sign players and keep the team the same heading into next season; which would be a mistake.
For those of you that don’t know, teams have two compliance buyouts that can be used either this year or next year.  They could also use one this year and one next year, both this year or both next year.  Basically it helps teams free up money, since the cap is going down from $70.2 Million to $64.3 Million, and the player’s salary wonâ€...

Red Wings overnight report: on free agent forwards, Holland’s trip to Toronto and Babcock on WJR

In theory, this exhausted blogger (still, go figure) has a light morning.

The Detroit Free Press (via photos) and Michigan Hockey (text, video, photos) looked back at the top moments of the Red Wings' 2013 season, USA Today posited a list of the top unrestricted free agents-to-be, and Valtteri Filppula's picture includes a ridiculously astute comment from Matt Kartozian as to why he's going to earn $5 million somewhere that isn't Detroit:

 7. Center Valtteri Filppula (Detroit Red Wings): The Red Wings hope they can re-sign him, although teams around the NHL seem to think he will test the marketplace. He has had one noteworthy statistical season, when he had 23 goals and 66 points in 2011-12. But there is a leaguewide romance with his skill set, especially with a shortage of centers with offensive potential.

There is a ridiculous level of romance with Filppula's skill set, and while USA Today's list notes that the kinds of players the Wings need to go...

More Red Wings free agent-to-be remarks and roster talk

As noted in an update to the overnight report, MLive's Brendan Savage posted a few more comments from the Red Wings' unrestricted free agents-to-be--Valtteri Filppula, Drew Miller, Daniel Cleary and Ian White--and White sounded exactly as disgruntled as you'd expect him to be.

The Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness spoke to White as well, and if Wings coach Mike Babcock's, "We wish him luck" is any indication, the Wings have as much desire to bring back a player who went straight to the media stating that he hadn't asked for a trade yet after being benched and then playing crappily when he did get a chance to proveh himself (okay, that was a very long and rambling "who/what-used-as-a-prepositional phrase" clause) has to remain a Wing: Continue reading "More Red Wings free agent-to-be remarks and roster talk"

Eklund: Valtteri Filppula will attract plenty of UFA interest.

Still working on the Chart, so this will be quick, but I can tell you now that Valtteri Filppula is a UFA at the right time in many ways. There is serious interest out there and it will be interesting to see how high the Wings will go to keep him around....Filppula, who suffered an injury in game 7, could be one of the top forwards in what will be a wild and constantly changing UFA market.

Khan: Valtteri Filppula’s ankle sprained, will take at least a month to recover

The Red Wings lost Valtteri Filppula's services after he was slew-footed by Andrew Shaw (though Kerry Fraser doesn't think so) during last night's Game 7 loss to Chicago, and while Filppula's future with the organization is likely down to a couple of weeks, MLive's Ansar Khan provides an injury update regarding Filppula's status:

Wings GM Ken Holland said Valtteri Filppula has high ankle sprain. Will be in cast for 2-3 weeks. Needs 6-8 weeks to heal.
 — Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) May 30, 2013

If the Wings want to keep him, a high ankle sprain won't dissuade them from signing him, and if they want to flip his rights at the draft (sign-and-trade-wise or in a straight-up trade), he'll still have value, but suffering a high ankle sprain in June will cut into his off-season training regimen.

Andrew Shaw slewfoots Valtteri Filppula in game 7, injures him

Detroit Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula only played two shifts in game 7 against the Chicago Blackhawks before he was injured by Andrew Shaw. Shaw went after Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg in front of the Red Wings bench, when Daniel Cleary and Valtteri Filppula stepped in. Shaw then used his left foot and kicked Filppula’s feet out from under him. Filppula had to be helped to the locker room where he underwent some x-rays and it was determined he had a high ankle sprain.
Good thing Pierre McGuire was right there to take in all the action and determine that it was a “good non-call by everyone.” Yes, Pierre, it’s always good when a slewfoot goes uncalled, no matter if that was the reason for the injury or not.

Valtteri Filppula Injured After Slewfoot by Blackhawks’ Andrew Shaw

The Detroit Red Wings lost Valtteri Filppula — a clutch Game 7 performer throughout his career — early on Wednesday night against the Blackhawks after he was injured sometime during a first-period shift. Whether or not he tweaked something prior to a confrontation with Chicago’s Andrew Shaw, a slewfoot from the Blackhawks’ forward certainly did not help matters.
Here’s the incident between Shaw and Filppula (and Henrik Zetterberg and Daniel Cleary), in which Shaw plants himself in front of the Red Wings bench, trying to stir things up. In the process, he becomes entangled with Filppula and then kicks the feet out from under Detroit’s forward:

Filppula reportedly was spotted on crutches later, and he did not return to the game. Another video shows Filppula’s full shift prior to the run-in with Shaw, and it does appear that Filppula may have been shaken up before the slewfoot.
However, it’s pretty clear that Shaw got away with one here — and with Filppula suffering an injury, Shaw may hear

Filppula leaves game with lower-body injury

Chicago -- The Red Wings' quest to advance to the Western Conference Finals got a lot more difficult early in the first period of Game 7.

Valtteri Filppula, coming off the ice for a line change at 3:43, was knocked to the ice by Chicago's Andrew Shaw.

Filppula appeared to go off the ice gingerly and headed straight to the dressing room.

CSN's Pat Boyle reported that Filppula was on crutches near the X-ray room and that it appeared to be an ankle injury.

At the start of the second period, the Wings said Filppula had a lower-body injury and would not return to the game.

Valtteri Filppula scores fantastic goal to seal game against Blackhawks

Detroit Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula has had an up-and-down season this year, but this phenomenal goal showed off just how good he can be. Henrik Zetterberg dropped the puck off to him at the blue line and rather than Filppula overpass as he has done so often, he pulled the puck to his backhand and drove to the net. As he was going down he fired a backhand shot between Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford’s legs to give the Red Wings a 4-1 lead. The Red Wings played fantastically against the Blackhawks in game two and evened the series at 1-1 heading back to Detroit for game three.

Trying To Figure Out Filppula

from John Niyo of the Detroit News,

The Wings don't have many pending free agents on the roster, but they do have a few, and none more notable - or mystifying - than Valtteri Filppula, the 29-year-old Finnish center who has become a lightning rod for criticism this spring.

In this new-and-improved, salary cap-strapped NHL, where nearly every team insists its focus is a draft-and-develop strategy -- and where fewer and fewer top-tier players are making it to free agency -- Filppula's bound to be a player with opportunities to cash in elsewhere.

The problem for the Wings is deciding what value he still has here in Detroit, where the former third-round pick has been a regular in the lineup ever since Steve Yzerman retired in 2006 and a regular in coach Mike Babcock's doghouse for a good, long time, as well.

Filppula scores as Wings inch in on eighth spot

DETROIT This last week could determine not just whether the Red Wings' playoff streak lives, but also Valtteri Filppula's future with the team.

Filppula, 29, is an unrestricted free agent after this season and could easily command 5 million a season on the open market after making 3.5 million each of the past two seasons.

Filppula can be an enigmatic player. He has all the skill and speed and defensive prowess you could want in a forward but sometimes fails to show it.

Everyone thought that Filppula had taken that step forward last season when he set career highs in goals with 23, assists with 43, points with 66, shots on goal with 144 and plus-minus at plus-18.

Then came the lockout.

Filppula practiced with teammates in Troy before heading to his native Finland to play with his former team, Jokerit, and with his brother, Ilari.

But Filppula injured his knee in Finland and was not quite 100 percent when the lockout ended.

This season Filppula had just seven goals and eight assists and was min

Matheson weighs in on Red Wings’ chances of re-signing Filppula, Cleary

Via both Paul and my pal NHL Gossip, the Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson posted a less-than-surprising but still intriguing quip about Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula's contract demands (according to MLive's Ansar Khan, Filppula's sore shoulder's keeping him from practicing this morning)...

 - The Detroit Red Wings are in a pickle with Val Filppula, who has tons of ability but has never really broken through to star status. He makes $3 million US now, and sources say he’d like $4.5 million or so in a new deal when he’s an unrestricted free agent July 1. That’s too rich for Detroit, but what if Pavel Datsyuk, 34, returns to Russia after his contract ends in 2014? “They know that’s a possibility,” said one NHL executive. Then, they need the Filppula, who’s 28.

And Matheson offered two more Wings-related quips... Continue reading "Matheson weighs in on Red Wings’ chances of re-signing Filppula, Cleary"

Filppula stars at Worlds and on video

The Red Wings' season is over, but forward Valtteri Filppula continues to make news on and off the ice.

Filppula, playing for Finland in the World Hockey Championships, had two goals and two assists in Monday's victory over Kazakhstan. He's also featured in a viral Nike advertisement that was posted on the YouTube channel BreakTheSpell2012 on May 10.

The video -- which runs 2 minutes, 28 seconds -- shows Filppula, 28, making his way around the streets of Detroit and through local ice rinks.
