A New Season Begins for Phoenix Coyotes

After an off-season that felt like an eternity for fans of hockey and the Phoenix Coyotes, training camp opens today with medicals and fitness testing with on-ice training beginning tomorrow. The training camp roster is huge for the team as they plan to pull the best players they can to rebuild their program. Three of the Hockey News top 50 prospects will be in camp this year: Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, and Keith Yandle, and all three have a legitimate shot of making the team.

One Time at Rookie Camp

The Phoenix Coyotes top prospects hit the ice in Peoria, Arizona for a rookie camp led by the Coyotes coaching staff. Everyone liked what they saw and Blake Wheeler, another first round pick of the Coyotes who plays for the University of Minnesota hockey program gave some advice to current first round pick Kyle Turris. Essentially, he told Turris to join his team in Wisconsin and worry about getting better rather than living up to being the 3rd overall pick. According to head coach Wayne Gretzky, both Peter Mueller and Martin Hanzal look much improved from last season, and have a good shot at making the team. Hanzal already signed his contract for the Coyotes but Mueller still has yet to sign his.

Prospects for the Phoenix Coyotes

The future for the Phoenix Coyotes is very bright. With four players ranked in the top 50 of The Hockey News Prospects (Peter Mueller, Martin Hanzal, Keith Yandle, Blake Wheeler) and adding Kyle Turris to the mix, when these players mature, the franchise looks very solid. Peter Mueller will probably make the team this season whereas Wheeler and Turris will spend a year or two playing for their respective schools (Wheeler at the University of Minnesota and Turris at the University of Wisconsin). The Coyotes development system just became stronger and deeper.

Lately, the talk in Phoenix has been goaltending, however a new development might cause a dustup in the valley. The Tampa Bay Lightning need to clear cap space because their top three forwards hold $22 million against the cap. Because of the Lightning's success, their players in the development system are not coming along as quickly, and they could not acquire a solid top pick in previous NHL Entry Drafts. In order to shore up their player development issues, Lightning General Manager Jay Feaster has allegedly offered Center Brad Richards to the three teams that occupy the first three picks in the NHL Draft on Friday: Phoenix, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The Coyotes have what the Lightning needs and the Lightning has what the Coyotes possibly need: a skater, a scorer, someone with deep playoff experience, and one who could quarterback the power play. The Coyotes have top prospects with forwards Peter Mueller and Martin Hanzal. However, the need is potentially there for someone with playmaking ability. There is cap room for the Coyotes, but is $7.8 million a year worth it?
