Penguins Unleash Offense, Finish Season Sweep of Sabres

The Pittsburgh Penguins completed a 4-game season sweep of the Buffalo Sabres for the first time in franchise history by beating them soundly 7-3. The Penguins continue to deal with an injury riddled lineup as Sidney Crosby and Max Talbot both sat out due to aggravation of their high ankle sprains. However, despite dressing only 3-centers for the game, the Penguins found plenty of offense as 7-different players found the back of the net, including Chris Minard who picked up his first NHL goal. Tyler Kennedy had a career game posting 3-points (1G, 2A). Ty Conklin completed his dominance over the Sabres by saving 29-of-32 shots. The win puts the Penguins back on top of the Eastern Conference in a points tie with the Canadiens, but with the advantage in games won.

Penguins Win Shootout, Take Atlantic Lead

The Pittsburgh Penguins jumped out to an early lead but ultimately needed a shootout to beat the Atlanta Thrashers on Sunday afternoon, 3-2. Marc-Andre Fleury, playing in his first full start since returning from his high ankle sprain injury, turned aside all three shots in the shootout to capture the win. Kris Letang scored the lone shootout goal for the Penguins. The win puts the Penguins solely in the lead of the Atlantic Division, and in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference behind Montreal. Montreal and Pittsburgh both have 81-points, but Montreal has a game in hand against the Penguins.

Malkin Sizzles as Penguins Beat Flyers 4-3

Evgeni Malkin continued his torrid play and the Pittsburgh Penguins added some pad to their lead over the Atlantic Division on Sunday as they beat the Philadelphia Flyers for the first time this season by a score of 4-3. The 3-point lead that the Penguins now have in the Atlantic Division is the largest any team has enjoyed in weeks, as the Devils, Flyers and Penguins have been in a pitched battle for division supremacy. Malkin led his team to their 3rd consecutive win with another outstanding multi-point performance, playing a part in every Penguin goal scored and picking up 4-points (1G, 3A). He now trails Alexander Ovechkin by just 3-points for the league lead (76) and is tied for 2nd with Daniel Alfredsson at 73 points. Surprisingly, no Russian has ever won the NHL scoring title…..yet.

Letang Scores, Beats Calgary in Shootout

The surging Pittsburgh Penguins won their 3rd straight game in a road shootout win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. The win, Pittsburgh's 6th in their last 7 games, came off the stick of rookie defenseman Kris Letang who scored the deciding goal in the 4th round of the shootout. Playing their 5th game in just 7-nights, the Penguins have finally found the groove that they have been searching for. After an inconsistent and slow start to the season, the Penguins suddenly find themselves just 2-points behind the Atlantic Division leading Flyers. However, it is crowded at the top of the Atlantic with 4-teams (Flyers, Rangers, Devils and Penguins) just 2-points apart with roughly a third of the season complete. Of those teams, the Penguins have scored the most goals at 84. They have also given up the most goals at 79.

The Penguins came out on fire in the first period, outshooting the Flames 14-8, but missed on a power play opportunity and gave up a late goal to leave the period down by a goal. Early in the period, Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury fell akwardly and caught ....click the link nelow for the rest of the article....
