Preseason Review: MVPs and The Last Roster Prediction

The preseason is over. Finally. 5 games is way too much. It is such a bitter sweet season. I'm watching the Colts, but I'm not watching the Colts play a real game with their best players, so I'm not really watching the Colts I know. It is fun to speculate on who will make the roster, but I

The preseason is coming to an end this week. In 7 days, the NFL will kickoff, and on Sunday, September 7th, we will see the official opening of Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday Night Football. So what is the goal for this game? DON'T GET HURT! The Colts are continuing tradition of dropping like flies,

Roster Cuts & Injuries Mean…

A new roster prediction! Yeah!
In case you haven't heard, the Colts had to dump 5 players by today. The sad part is that two of them weren't cut but placed on the Injured Reserve.
TJ Rushing and Zac Herold both were placed on the IR today. Rushing hurt his right knee in the Buffalo game, and Zac

Colts v. Bills Review

Wow. This was a terrible game. Just terrible. I couldn't even pay attention for most of it. Seeing the roof open was cool though.
I can't even do a best player rundown. This game was that bad. The only notables were Devin Aromashodu with his one catch that went 94 yards for a score and Eric

Colts v. Bills Preview

Tonight, Lucas Oil Stadium will host its first NFL game. Sure, it's preseason, but it's still a milestone. Remember the first four years of the decade? We didn't know whether the Colts were going to be in Indianapolis for much longer. It seemed imminent that they would move to Los Angeles.

Colts v. Falcons Recap

We actually won a preseason game on the road. It is a rare feat that we Colts fans may never see again in our lifetimes. 2006 was the last time when we beat the Saints. We went 5 non-home games winless until winning this one. Of course, that wasn't a true road game. The Saints were playing

These teams are the exact opposite. The Colts are a favorite for the Super Bowl. The Falcons are a favorite for the number one pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. It doesn't help that they drafted Matt Ryan, who will be the bust of the decade. The Falcons have drafted busts and complete idiots who get

Colts versus Panthers Preview

The Colts were impressive last week against Washington, but this game will show whether that was a fluke or if some of these players really are going to be contributors. Mike Hart, Quinn Gray, Pierre Garcon, and Eric Foster were the top players against Washington. If they can repeat their success, they will be shooting up the depth chart and clinch a roster spot. This is Week 1 of the preseason, but it feels like Week 2 since we played the Hall of Fame Game. I was wondering why I couldn't find the Panthers' first preseason game's score.
Players To Watch
Mike Hart, Preseason Stats-4 carries, 53 yards, 3 receptions, 28 yards: Hart was amazing in his first game. He touched the ball eight times. He averaged 10.1 yards per touch. Hart almost scored a touchdown on the last play of the game, where he went out at the one yard line. Hart will be used as a short yardage back, but the way he played, ten yards was short for him. He di not go down after the first hit. He may not look great in training camp, but he plays great in games. We knew that coming in. I don't know why people thought he may only make the practice squad.
Pierre Garcon, 4 receptions, 33 yards, 1 kick return, 51 yards: At the beginning of OTAs, the team said Pierre Garcon would not be a returner. Well, they changed their mind, and Garcon proved that he can return. His return late in the fourth quarter was great, but he should have tried to score instead of stepping out of bounds. Garcon made some athletic catches and ran great routes. He looked like a future star. If he can continue to play well, he could be the fourth receiver.
Quinn Gray, 19 passing attempts, 10 completions, 160 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, 2 carries, 11 yards: The recently signed QB outplayed Jim Sorgi and Jared Lorenzen by far, and he caught everyone's eye. Gray did not let pressure get to him, and he was able to throw accurate passes on the run. For a backup QB, I'm not looking for who has the best arm or the most time in the system. I'm looking for someone who could come in if Peyton got hurt, the backup can come in and lead the team to victory. Gray's drive that resulted in a touchdown showed his ability to improvise when the pocket breaks down and lead a team down the field. If Gray can have a QB rating over 90, he will make the roster. Sorgi or Lorenzen would have to play like Marino, Manning, and Montana combined to make the roster.
Marvin Harrison, Did Not Play: Marvin has been cleared to play. Now we can see all of our wide receivers play. Harrison will be the number 2 receiver, and nothing will change that. However, he played poorly in the playoff game last year. I want to see if he is still a little rusty or if he is back to normal. By September 7th, it won't matter. He will be back to normal no matter how he plays in this game. I just want to see how well his knee has healed.
Marcus Howard: In the last game, Marcus Howard had 1.5 sacks. The half sack resulted in a fumble, and the full sack was made while he was being held. Howard looked very fast in the first game, but he also showed some strength. On third downs, Howard could make a lot of appearances. If he can continue to show a mix of speed and strength, he will get a lot of sacks on those third downs.

Hall of Fame Game Preview

Obviously, I will not try to predict anything or break down the opponent. I know nothing about the Redskins backups, and I won't try to act like I do. The final outcome of preseason games are useless. We could go 5-0 or 0-5, and it won't affect my final prediction on the season.
Players To Watch
Quinn Gray: We've heard good things about him from people who have gone to training camp. Right now, I consider him the leader for the backup QB job. This game could give him a huge advantage over Sorgi and the Pillsbury Throwboy.
Clifton Dawson & Mike Hart: This may be the tightest race so far. Hart has amazing potential as a fullback in the Colts system. However, so does Dawson. Dawson has looked better in practice, but Hart is better at full contact than he is in practice. I want to see who is the better receiver and short yardage back in this game.
Sam Giguere, Courtney Roby, & Pierre Garcon: Right now, I consider Marvin, Reggie, Gonzalez, Hall, and Aromashodu as locks to make the final roster. After last year, I see one of these guys making the roster and either Garcon or Giguere (depending on who makes the roster) making the practice squad. Giguere has great potential. Roby has the most experience. Garcon has looked great in practice. This should be another tight race.
Mike Pollak & Charlie Johnson: This is a starting job competition. I'm not a Charlie Johnson fan at all, so he will have to play very well to win me over. Mike Pollak is our second round draft pick. He's expected to win this battle. The right guard spot should be hard to get.
Marcus Howard & Curtis Johnson: Neither of these guys won't make the roster. Or at least I believe so. What I want to see is if the Colts will be able to generate a pass rush if Mathis and Freeney would get hurt again. These guys are two of the fastest rookie defensive ends in the league. They will be expected to give the Washington QBs hell. In another interesting development, Colt Brennan, the former Hawaii QB, is a backup QB for the Redskins. Marcus Howard played for Georgia last year and dominated the Hawaii offensive line in the Sugar Bowl. Colt and Marcus are very familiar.
Jamie Silva & Brannon Condren: The Colts will only carry 4 safeties. Bob Sanders, Antoine Bethea, and Matt Giordano will most definitely make the roster. The competition between Silva the undrafted free agent out of Boston College and Condren the unknown second year player. I prefer Silva who showed great poise and leadership in college over Condren, who I do not know too much about.
