Giles no show in Vegas

After a whole off-season of talk about Marcus Giles becoming a Los Angeles Dodgers, it isn't happening. Giles was recently released by the Colorado Rockies after refusing a minor league assignment. The Dodgers, who almost traded for him agreed to a minor league deal with the third baseman earlier today. The plan was for Giles to spend 10 days at AAA-Las Vegas to reacquaint himself with third base and get some more at-bats, then come up to the majors and split time with Rookie Blake DeWitt at third. So what happened?

Marcus Giles trade update

A trade between the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers for Marcus Giles is looking less likely. Even with the team contemplating putting both Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra on the disabled list, the trade interest from the Dodgers is minimal. Giles agent, Joe Blick, said that the two teams have had conversations but a deal seems unlikely. Giles is still hopeful thou that something can be worked out.

Rockies looking to move Giles

The Colorado Rockies are looking to move second baseman Marcus Giles before the season starts. At the start of camp it was known Giles was a pretty big long shot to win the starting job, so now that the team is looking to move him its all but certain he won't be starting. Rookie Jayson Nix should be the starter for the team. So what team could the Rockies be sending Giles to?

Padres Offense Has A "Little" Problem

A few words come to mind when I think of the San Diego Padres offense. Punchless, anemic, hapless, weak, maybe even effete or feminine. But as I was sitting here watching Joel Pineiro - Joel "FREAKING" Pineiro - toss seven shutout innings while only allowing four hits in a 5-0 Cardinals win, I could only think of one thing to describe it: Impotent.

Yes, one night after Kip "FREAKING" Wells (the same Kip Wells who currently owns 13 losses and a 5.27 ERA) threw seven innings without giving up an earned run in a 2-1 Cardinals win, the Padres were stifled once again. This is getting ridiculous. Going into last night's game, their pitching staff currently has the lowest ERA in the majors, at 3.49, that's 0.32 better than second place. They've combined for 16 shutouts this season, which is seven more than the second place team. With pitching like that they should be running away with the National League West and be favored to win the World Series. But their offense is laughable.

Entering last night's game they ranked last in the majors in batting average (.244) and on base percentage (.312), are next to last in hits (943) and are three from the bottom in slugging percentage (.392). To give you some reference, the Yankees are currently first in batting average at .291. Hell, the Orioles are at .274, the Devil Rays are at .269 and even the Royals are at .266. If the Padres had any of those offenses, they'd be far and away the best team in the National League and one of the best in baseball. As of now, they're middling around with a .535 winning percentage, three games behind the Diamondbacks in the NL West.

It's awful, of the hitters that qualify (351 plate appearances) Adrian Gonzalez leads the team with a .266 average, Mike Cameron is second at .252 and Khalil Greene is third at - prepare yourselves - .228. Read that again, I'll wait. So what did they do to punch up the offense as the deadline approached? Added Rob Mackowiak (.273), Morgan Ensberg (.231), Scott Hairston (.240) and Michael Barrett (.247). Nice work guys, problems solved, let's get a sandwich and watch the wins roll in.

So I'm suggesting a solution. Every Padre hitter must take at least one tablet of Viagra, Cialis or their erectile dysfunction medication of choice, before each game. Cialis would work better for the bench players, so when the moment is right, they'll be ready. Sure it'll lead to some awkward shower time after the game, especially with the Giles brothers and Greg Maddux around, but hey it just might work. Couldn't possibly be worse than it is. By the way, I thought about making a "ring-toss" joke about the aforementioned Giles bros. but we try to keep things classy around here. Normally I'd just suggest they look at a picture of Jessica Alba to add some potency to their bats, but with the recent Jeter-induced herpes rumor going around, that might not do the trick. But honestly, even knowing that, we'd all still hit it. Repeatedly.

Ranking the Top 30 MLB 2nd Baseman

These rankings are based off of their 2007 performance. The clear cut #1 Second Baseman during the pre-season is still playing "King of Hill" with the others. Chase Utley is a second baseman in a third basemans body. This guy just puts up monster numbers, and is a Top 5 Fantasy Player because of the scarcity at the position.

ESPN Finally Gives Some West Coast Love

Not sure if any of you caught it last night on Sportscenter, but the NL West was called the best division in baseball. This is a far cry from the supposed bottom dweller it has been called in the past, and where many figured it to be again.

The NL West is the only NL division with three teams over .500, and the only other division in baseball that has three is the AL West where the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have gotten off to their best start in franchise history.

With the western division loaded with players such as Ichiro, Teixeira, Furcal, Big Daddy Vlady, Giles, Helton, Bonds, O-Dog, and Chavez, not to mention loaded staffs comprised of Peavy, King Felix, Lackey, Schmidt, Haren, Padilla, Zito, Webb, and Francis it is easy to see why the teams on the Pacific are playing well.

San Diego Showers Aren't Safe

It's going to be an interesting season. We found out Greg Maddux is a bit of a closet nutjob. But compared to Brian and Marcus Giles, Maddux might be pretty damn normal. Some people would like to be a fly on the wall in certain places. If I was a fly in San Diego's locker room, I'd probably find the nearest ceiling fan.

Clutch Hitters of 2006

A very stat-heavy article from Baseball Prospectus that helps determine who were and weren't the best clutch hitters of this past season. It's worth breezing through to see the names that show up on both lists. As you may have guessed, David Ortiz appears on one and Alex Rodriguez appears on the other, but there are a number of others that make unexpected cameos.

Early Fantasy 2B Rankings

In order to win your fantasy league, you need to understand where the shortages of talent exist. There is no question that second base is the weakest position in this year's talent pool.
Sure, you can make an arguement for catchers (especially if you are in a league that must start 2), but the deviation from one catcher to the next is not that big. The large majority of them will give you the same 55 runs and 55 RBI. They also dont weigh down your team batting average because they get half as many ABs. 2B is a different story. Players such as Utley and Cano are worth going the extra mile for on draft day because they significantly outproduce their competition. Kendrick is an interesting flier and its possible that Brian Roberts might be had for a decent price. Pretty much everyone else has some big time question marks.

Third base looks especially deep this year. It would probably be wise to allocate some draft day dollars from 3B over to 2B. Rolen is looking like the 10th best 3B on the board. Grabbing him will make you a lot happier then using a late pick on Cantu as your starting second baseman.
