Wade Phillips needs to raise the ante

Wade Phillips hates the December thing. We get that. But when he answers the questions about the Cowboys' lack of success in December he comes across as being in denial.

Meanwhile some of his players, like Bradie James, have taken the December thing head on. James' comments last week were the strongest by a Cowboy. He admits there's an issue and it's time to do something about it. Jason Witten did the same. So did Terence Newman.

Looking at the numbers it's hard to argue that something happens to this team when it matters most.

Instead, Phillips says it's something the media has made up. OK.

Well, maybe we should be used to this from Phillips, but this is what I would want to hear: "I am raising the stakes right now ... If this is a poker game, I am shoving my chips right in the middle of the table. I am raising the ante. Anybody who wants out can get out. This team is going to the playoffs, OK? This team is going to the playoffs."

That was Jim Fassel when he was with the New York Giants. His team started out the year 7-2 but lost back to back games, including a 31-21 loss to Detroit, prompting his guarantee.

The Giants won five straight and then went to Super Bowl XXXV.

Fassel really had nothing to lose. He was coming off back to back playoff-less seasons and if the Giants didn't make the playoffs he was going to be fired. Instead he lit a fire under his team and they responded. And he got a contract extension.

Maybe Phillips should pull that trick out of the bag. What does he have to lose?

Another round with Giants?

As the New York Giants went into the ``Victory'' formation to run out the clock in Sunday's 31-17 win, Dallas Cowboys inside linebacker Bradie James sent them a message of respect.

See you in the playoffs, James said

In the days leading up to this game, James said the Cowboys wanted to bury the Giants. He wanted to avoid a repeat of the 2007 season, when the Giants eliminated the Cowboys in the post-season.

Now, James figures the Cowboys will face the Giants at some point in January.

``But we have to take care of our business,'' James said. ``The only way to do it is to keep winning. They (the Giants) will be winning, too. They're not going away.''

Bradie James and Eli Manning

Cowboys linebacker Bradie James shares his strong aversion about the Giants."We don't like them, and they don't like us," James said. "People have been saying that this is their season. This is our season, too, because if we go in and beat these guys, we don't have to worry about them coming back to haunt us." James is dead on about putting a team away. The Cowboys must put the Giants away on Sunday. If the Giants defeat the Cowboys, then the Giants have life. Last season, unfortunately, the Giants did not put away the Eagles. As a result, the Eagles came back to haunt the Giants._______________________________________Is Eli serious or is it the result of the medicine he is taking?"We've got to know that this is the same team that started 5-0," Manning said today. "You look at it offensively, the same guys that started the first game are in the huddle. We've got the ability and the talent to go out there and play great football and win games, and we've got to expect that from ourselves. There's no reason not to. Just because you go through a little stretch where you're not playing your best, it's still the same guys, it's still the same team that got off to a great start, the same team that beat this team in Dallas in front of 105,000 people."Hopefully, Eli is right. We will find out Sunday.

Bradie James sounds off

Cowboys LB Bradie James gave political correctness a stiff arm Wednesday and issued some strong opinions.

Unlike coach Wade Phillips and quarterback Tony Romo, James isn't afraid of tackling the Cowboys' December doldrums head on.

Since 1996, Dallas is 19-39 in post-November games, including 0-5 in the playoffs. Since Romo became the starter in 2006, Dallas is 5-10 after November, including 0-2 in the playoffs.

"There's no way I can sit back and just forget about what has happened in our past," James said. "Nobody is exempt from the criticism if you don't take care of business in December and go to the playoffs and do what we need to do.That's what time it is now."

James also admitted the Cowboys would love to be the team that pushes the Giants over the edge. At 6-5, New York is two games behind the first-place Cowboys in the NFC East and a game behind the second-place Eagles. A loss to Dallas Sunday would all but eliminate them from the playoff chase.

"We don't like them, and they don't like us," James said. "There's no way of getting around that. People have been saying this is their season, what they're playing for. This is our season, too. If we beat these guys, we don't have to worry about them coming back to haunt us."

In case you didn't get it, that's a reference to the Giants upsetting the No. 1-seeded Cowboys in the playoffs after the 2007 season.

Bradie James skips the script

Dallas Cowboys inside linebacker Bradie James met reporters at his locker today by proclaiming ``I know what I'm supposed tosay, but I'm going to deviate it from a little bit.'' He was not kidding.

James laid into the New York Giants, whom the Cowboys will face on Sunday.

``We don't like them, and they don't like us,'' James said. ``There's no way of getting arond that. People have been saying this is their season, what they're playing for. This is our seaosn, too. If we beat these guys, we don't have to worry about them coming back to haunt us.''

James alluded to the 2007 playoffs, when the Giants eliminated the Cowboys.

Cowboys' strong sense of team started at Alamodome

IRVING - LB Bradie James says he's never been around a better team atmosphere in his seven seasons with the Cowboys.

And it all started during training camp in San Antonio.

"We had so many practices that were just focused on football - no distractions," James said Monday. "And I don't want to put it in perspective of just doing your job, but going out there and having fun doing your job. With the characters we have on this team, guys are really just playing for one another, understanding the goals we have, sticking by each other's side."

Bradie James on Philly: Cowboys out to right a wrong

Bradie James avoids the word revenge. But the Cowboys linebacker doesn't want to fool himself or anyone else, either.

He admits the team's 44-6 loss in Philadelphia to end last season is incentive as the Cowboys prepare to return to the scene of the crime.

"We know,'' James said. "We know what happened last year. This is a different team, a different season, but we haven't forgotten.

"The only way we can right that wrong is to go out there and win whether it's ugly, sexy, it doesn't really matter. We've got to go out there and find a way to win.

"We'll definitely know where we are as a team after we play this game,''

Scripts aren't to Cowboys liking

DALLAS - LB Bradie James says he knows why the Cowboys have allowed their last two opponents to score on their opening drives.

Their plays are scripted.

"We are going to get their best 10 plays from the beginning," James said after the 38-17 win over Seattle on Sunday. "The coaches do a great job of adjusting and then it's like, OK guys, 'We got to wake this thing up.' "

The Seahawks drove 69 yards in 14 plays to take a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

After scoring on their third possession, Seattle didn't score again until the fourth quarter.

James gives Sensabaugh a ringing endorsement

Linebacker Bradie James was asked if he feels a difference with Gerald Sensabaugh in the secondary.

"I don't feel a difference,'' James said. "I know a difference.

"I mean, I've been here last year when we had a carousel as far as safeties. The year before that, another guy. It's a difference. You can see it. I mean, just look at the plays, the breakups. Just look at how the secondary is playing. Ken (Hamlin) does his job, but Gerald comes in and he really helps everybody.

"He's rarely out of position. With that being said, the other guys know where he's going to be. They can take a calculated risk and make plays.''

By the way, that other guy James referred to was Roy Williams.

LB Bradie James says Cowboys have a 'sense of urgency'

Following another disappointing loss, inebacker Bradie James said Monday that the Cowboys are who they are.

"The truth is we're 2-2. It's not all about what I think. It's about what our record is," James said. "We have to be consistent. Last week I was saying we won't need to be glamorous. We just have to go out there and win the game. I don't know if we get caught up in that or what. If you have a blueprint - the week before was a pretty good blueprint of how you should, how this team should approach every game. You go back and then you lose the next game and don't do some of the things that you did the week before and you're like, 'OK. Where are we? What is our identity?' And our identity is we're 2-2 and in order for us to continue to win and not be an up-and-down team, we have to win those tough games.

"It's kind of different. It's early, unlike December. When December comes around here, we haven't been consistent. Early in the season, you want to start early. You want to start off real good early because you want to have those wins stacked up because you don't know how things might happen with injuries toward the end of the year. You just don't know. Now, we are in a situation where we just have to find a way to win, be consistent because that's what it's about. You have to stack up as many wins as you can because you don't know toward the end of the year what could happen. That's what happened to us in the past."

James said the Cowboys aren't a desperate team right now going into Sunday's game at winless Kansas City.

"I think there is definitely a sense of urgency because, for one, you don't want to go into the bye week with a loss," James said. "We're playing a team next week and it's an important game. ... We can't roll out that helmet and think that we're going to win the game.

"You don't want to have this feeling that we have coming in here on Monday morning with a loss when you think you've played well and you still lose the game. That's why I say you can't just be too sexy. Sometimes you have to just go out there and win the game by whatever means you need to win. ... We will have to [find a way to win]. Next month, we won't have a lot of ball to play so we need to right some wrongs right now and find a way."

Written by theMBIIIeffect
Much like Chad Ochocinco and Chris Johnson, inside linebacker Bradie James will wear pink gloves and cleats as part of the NFL’s “Crucial Catch” campaign.
The campaign is aimed at getting women over 40 to have regular mammograms.
While some may wear the pink as a fashion statement, James’ pink garb means a little more.

Bradie James changing his look

We all know about Billy "White Shoes" Johnson, but this week we will see Bradie "Pink Shoes" James for the Cowboys.

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month the NFL is allowing players to wear pink cleats, wrist bands, gloves, sideline caps and towels. At the end of the month, the league will auction some of the game worn equipment on its Web site with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

James' mother, Etta, lost her battle with breast cancer while he attended LSU.

James said he would wear the pink shoes and other articles during Sunday's game and then again Oct. 25 against Atlanta.

"My mom lost her battle with breast cancer," James said, "so it's good we can do some things like this. I'm happy the league is picking up on it, being Breast Cancer Awareness month. We're just going to honor all the survivors and all the people that lost their battles and promote awareness."

As part of his Foundation56, James will be offering 35 women free mammograms on Oct. 13 and on Oct. 17 he will be the co-chair of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with Laura Bush. At the end of the month he will have a Halloween party in which we're still trying to gather some info. Once we have that we'll put it on the blog, too.

For more information on James' foundation, go to here.

Bradie James: Now is time to bounce back

The general feeling coming out of the locker room Monday was one of unity. There were no fingers being pointed. Instead players continued to take the blame for what happened Sunday.

It's the accountability approach Wade Phillips and the players have preached since the end of last season.

"This is where we are right now coming through the second game of the season," linebacker Bradie James said. "It's an adverse situation. It's time to bounce back and pick ourselves up because it's a marathon, not a sprint. It'll be a shame if we fall apart right now."

Twice last year the Cowboys lost back to back games. One stretch came in Tony Romo's absence from a fractured pinky finger. The other came at the end of last year when they lost to Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Can this team rebound?

The VRR: Wade Phillips Takes Over the Defense

BTB's own quincyyyyy asks the question Is Wade really a new man?, and gives us Bradie James' answer via the DMN blog.

"This is the most I've ever talked to Wade Phillips," [Bradie James] said. "For whatever reason, he sits in our meeting room and this is his defense. I've learned so much in the last couple of weeks, just dealing with him during minicamps and OTAs.
"I think I've gained a whole new appreciation for him and the scheme, because there's no middleman now. When you had a defensive coordinator, you had Brian Stewart, so you had to go through him and you don't know how Wade is feeling. You've just got to take him for his word. Now you don't have that. You go straight to the horse's mouth, and he makes the change right here on the field and it stays that way. There's no uncertainty."

Just to close out the DeMarcus Ware/Greg Ellis kerfuffle, JFE asked Ware directly about Ellis' wild claims.

"I didn’t do that," Ware said.

Drew Pearson on not being in the Ring of Honor:

"There's nothing you can do about it," Pearson said on ESPN 103.3. "My records speak to itself. I can't add to those numbers. I can't go out there and catch any more passes. It's there. If it's good enough, then I'll be up there. If it's not, then I won't, and apparently at this point, it's not."

Drew Pearson on his relationship with Jerry Jones:

"[Jerry] speaks to me," Pearson said, "but you know, with all due respect, he calls me Preston more than he calls me Drew."

Ha!

Former Packers head coach and current Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman on Stephen McGee

But he does see certain traits and mannerisms "athletically and movement-wise" in McGee that remind [Sherman] just a little of Steve Young, who won a Super Bowl with pinpoint throwing accuracy but also kept defenses honest with his scrambling ability.

Quick Hits:
More on the practice facility collpase.
Star of stage and screen and former Cowboy Tony Curtis looking for his chance in Kansas City.
Couple of Cowboys go camping; Stephen Hodge and Jason Hatcher helping out at a football camp.

Tony Romo did a live chat today on NFL.com. Thanks for not answering any of my questions, Tony. Anyways, he had a little to say about Roy Williams, more to say about Jason Garrett, and even shared some thoughts on Free Reign.

Roy has worked really hard this offseason. Think it’s shown so far in OTAs and minicamps. He’s going to have a good year this year. He’s been very good so far this offseason.

On Garrett:

I think that Jason has a great feel for the game. He’s a very intelligent individual, and he still maintains a certain level ... There needs to be good, open lines of communication between the QB and the coordinator and the QB coach. They need to trust you as a QB, and you need to be able trust the coaches.
I think we have a great relationship in that regard. He allows me to voice my opinions, and i always like it when he’s coaching me up and we’re doing the things that we need to do to get better as a group. That’s the key -- to improve collectively as a group. He’s an ex player, so he looks at himself through my perspective. He’s always going to try to improve the same way that I do as a player.
I’m lucky to have him around me -- he’s helped make me a better player.

On metal:

Free Reign? Those are some good guys. They love music, and they love getting out there and jamming to hard rock. I think they’re a bunch of good guys. I like it. They do have some good songs ... but they’re still young. They’re still growing.

More VRR after the jump.

DC.com's Rob Phillips speculates that 7th-round pick, Manny Johnson, may have Razorback "potential".

We never saw Johnson work as the point man in practice, but he is yet another skill player with passing experience (a la Patrick Crayton, Tashard Choice and Stanback). The Gilmer, Texas, native led his high school to the state title in 2004 as a quarterback before committing to Oklahoma as a wideout. He threw for 48 touchdowns in his high school career -- and by the way, he led Gilmer past sixth-round pick Stephen Hodge's team during those '04 playoffs.
"He always wanted to be a wide receiver," Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor said. "I always thought he was crazy. I thought he’d have been an amazing quarterback."

The Star-T did a little Q&A with new Cowboys tight end, Scott Chandler. Here's their bio on him:

Born in Bedford, Chandler starred at wide receiver for Southlake Carroll in high school. He went to college at Iowa where he moved to tight end to take advantage of his 6-foot-7 frame and was a fourth-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 2007.
But his pro career hasn’t gone as he wanted. He was inactive for all but one game during his rookie season and spent 2008 on injured reserve with a toe injury.
He hopes to change his fortune this season after signing with the Cowboys on May 30. He’ll be battling it out with Rodney Hannah, John Phillips and Jamar Hunt for the third tight end spot behind Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett.

The first two Cowboys to go in KFFL's Fantasy Football Analysis Draft are the team's #1 and #2 running backs, who were 'drafted' in Round 2.

6) Marion Barber III, running back, Dallas Cowboys
Reason: Even though there is a three-headed monster in Dallas, and they may use the "Razorback" formation, Barber is clearly the team's No. 1 running back as well as their short-yardage runner. He was slowed by a toe injury last season but is fully healthy and has reached paydirt at least 10 times in two of the last three seasons.
[snip]
10) Felix Jones, running back, Dallas Cowboys
Reason: I realize this was a little early to draft Jones, considering his uncertain role with the team along with last year's toe injury. In 2008, Jones played in only six games all year, and started none, but averaged 8.9 yards per carry. Reports are that Jones will have an expanded role in 2009. There has even been word out of Valley Ranch that Barber could go back to the more limited role he played under former head coach Bill Parcells, and Jones could be implemented as the featured back. It's a gamble, but I think Jones will be a much bigger part of the Cowboys offensive in 2009, amassing a lot of yards and scoring a lot of touchdowns.
Others Considered: None Standards Set: I don't know that Jones could have the kind of production that, say, Houston Texans running back Steve Slaton had last year, but I think Jones' knack for big plays will make it difficult for the Cowboys to keep him on the bench for too long. I expect to see Jones touch the ball up to 20 times per game both on the ground and through the air, ending the year with approximately 1,500 total yards and 12 touchdowns.

1,500 yards?!? That would be awesome!
Staying in fantasyland, Bradie James helped me win an FF championship last year. This article says he's a "must-have" for this year.

His ability to make both tackles and sacks makes James fantasy gold. In addition to having three more sacks than any other inside linebacker, James also had 117 tackles, which tied for 16th in the league. Of the 47 players with the most tackles, only one other linebacker (Chad Greenway) had more than four sacks.
[snip]
James is a must-have fantasy pick for other reasons as well. At age 28 he is just hitting his prime, and he has not missed one regular-season game in the last five years. His 2009 numbers should also be helped by the acquisition of 11-year veteran linebacker Keith Brooking, who had two of his best seasons while playing in Wade Phillips's 3-4 scheme in Atlanta in '02 and '03. Brooking will occupy the inside spot that was manned last year by Zach Thomas, who admitted after the season that he was not comfortable in the system. "Keith knows how to play, and that helps me," James says. "When everybody knows their role in the defense, then we all play well."

A heart-warming story: Bradie James and Cory Proctor helped restore a fan's stolen Cowboys memorabilia.

When Cowboys Linebacker Bradie James heard that someone broke into this man's (53-year-old Butch Franklin) apartment and stole his Cowboys stuff, he wanted to make sure those empty spaces were filled with new and shiny memorabilia, so he brought a bag full of autographed items to give to his new friend.
[snip]
Before Bradie left, there was one important matter to take care of. He presented Butch with a #56 jersey to wear, in addition to the Tony Romo jersey he was currently wearing. Butch proceeded to switch to the #56. Butch said with a smile, "Bradie James! Number 56!"
Earlier today, Cowboys Lineman Cory Proctor also paid Butch a surprise visit and autographed and delivered a seat-back from Texas stadium with signatures from fellow linemen Leonard Davis and Mark Columbo.

Emmitt Smith and Daryl Johnston get in at #7 on NFLN's Top 10 dynamic duos list. Moooose!
If the Cowboys were to induct somebody into the Ring of Honor this year (Jerry Jones said they're not), who do you think it should be? David Quinn at NFLGridiron Gab 'nominates' Charlie Waters and Jay Novacek.

To manage all parking functions at Cowboys Stadium, the team has selected Central Parking System, the country's largest parking management company. Now we know whom to complain to about the costs.
