Cochran rallies for 4th Champions win

Injuries kept Russ Cochran from playing up to his lofty expectations in 2012.

Finally healthy, Cochran broke through with a win that thrust him back into title contention on the Champions Tour.

Cochran won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his fourth career senior circuit title, closing with a 5-under-par 67 for a one-stroke victory over Jay Don Blake.

Cochran, who battled through rib and wrist injuries last season, finished at 11-under 205 at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines.

The left-hander, who entered the day two strokes behind second-round leader Duffy Waldorf, broke a winless streak that stretched 35 tournaments.

''I didn't really expect to win. But I knew I could compete and get in contention. Of course, when you do that, sometimes good things happen,'' Cochran said.

Blake shot 69. He bogeyed the par-3 17th with his first three-putt of the tournament to fall a stroke behind. He had a chance to force a playoff, but his birdie try on the par-4 18th missed to the right.

Frost leads Champions Tour opener by 1 stroke

David Frost of South Africa had a 7-under 65 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Mitsubishi Electric Championship.

The tournament opens the 34th Champions Tour season at Hualalai Golf Club.

The field of 40 has champions from the past two years and major champions from the past five, plus eight sponsor exemptions.

Frost made a 40-foot eagle putt on the seventh hole to reach 5 under. His only bogey came on the next hole and three birdies on the back nine put him into the lead.

Kirk Triplett, the 2012 Champions Rookie of the Year, bogeyed the last hole to fall into a six-way tie for second at 66. He also had an eagle, hitting his hybrid club 244 yards to 6 feet on the par-5 10th.

''I hit the ball real well all day, had a lot of chances,'' Triplett said. ''I made a nice eagle and had a couple birdies early on the back nine that got me to a nice score, then I couldn't get it any lower.''

He was second with 63-year-old Tom Kite, Willie Wood, John C

Tommy Gainey birdied No. 18 for a 3-under 69 and a one-stroke victory in the Pebble Beach Invitational on Sunday.

Kirk Triplett and William McGirt tied for second in the tournament that featured players from the PGA, LPGA, Champions and Web.com tours. Triplett, who was tied for the lead following the second round, closed with a 68 and McGirt shot a 69 in the final round.

Gainey, who trailed leader Robert Streb by two shots at the beginning of the day, finished at 11 under 277.

McGirt and Triplett, playing one group ahead of Gainey, both missed birdie attempts on 18.

Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam, playing in a foursome that included Juli Inkster, shot a 69 and finished at 1 over.

Gainey earned $60,000 of the $300,000 purse.

Robert Streb shot a 3-under 69 in rainy conditions Saturday at Del Monte to take a one-stroke lead over Billy Horschel after the third round in the Pebble Beach Invitational.

Streb, 25, had a 10-under 206 total. He won the Web.com Tour's Mylan Classic in September and finished seventh on the tour's money list to earn a PGA Tour card.

Horschel had a 68, also at Del Monte, as the field of 81 played in light morning rain and soft conditions in the tournament that features PGA, LPGA, Champion and Web.com tour players.

James Hahn had a 66 at Syglass Hill to join Tommy Gainey at 8 under. Gainey shot a 70 at Pebble Beach.

Russ Cochran shot a 7-under 65 on Friday at Del Monte for a share of the Pebble Beach Invitational lead with fellow Champions Tour player Kirk Triplett.

Triplett had a 69 at Del Monte to match Cochran at 9-under 135 in the tournament that features 81 players from the PGA, LPGA, Champions and Web.com tours.

John Mallinger, the 2010 winner, was a stroke back after a 69 at Spyglass Hill.

Triplett had one bogey and four birdies, including 15-footer on the ninth, his final hole of the round.

''I putted well and drove the ball into the fairway most of the day,'' said Triplett, who claimed his first Champions Tour title in July at Pebble Beach. ''That's what you have to do at Del Monte to play well.''

Cochran, the 2009 Champions Tour rookie of the year who had three top-10 finishes this season, had five birdies and began his round with an eagle on the par-5 first hole.

William McGirt and Robert Streb were 7 under. McGirt had a 71 at Spyglass, and Streb shot a 68 at Pebble Be

Scott Stallings shot an 8-under 64 on Thursday at Del Monte to take a two-stroke lead over William McGirt and Kirk Triplett in the Pebble Beach Invitational.

Stallings, the True South Classic winner in July for his second PGA Tour title, made eight birdie putts inside 10 feet in the unofficial event that features PGA, LPGA, Champions and Web.com tour players.

''I had to grind it all day, but didn't have to do anything too severe,'' said Stallings, who made an 8-foot par putt on the 18th. ''Last year, I didn't know where to hit the ball. I didn't know the course. This time around, I felt more relaxed.''

Stallings opened with a 76 last year, also at Del Monte, and ended up missing the cut.

McGirt, who had three top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season including tie for second in the Canadian Open, had a bogey-free 66 at Del Monte.

''I hit it pretty good, it was a solid day,'' McGirt said. ''I had no bogeys and anytime who have no bogeys

PGA Tour caddie dies of heart attack

Scott Steele, a popular PGA Tour caddie who worked for Larry Mize when he won the 1987 Masters, has died of a heart attack. He was 55.

The PGA Tour said Steele had a heart attack Oct. 14 in the parking lot at the Greater Hickory Golf Classic, where he was working for Kirk Triplett. He was placed in a medically induced coma to help his recovery. Steele died Friday night.

Players, officials and caddies wore black ribbons Sunday at the McGladrey Classic in his honor.

''It didn't matter if you were a major champion or a Monday qualifier, you always got his best game,'' Triplett said. ''He may be gone but he will continue to be an inspiration to me and many others for a long time to come.''

Calcavecchia leads Boeing Classic

Defending champion Mark Calcavecchia eagled the par-5 eighth hole and finished with a 7-under 65 on Friday to take the first-round lead in the Boeing Classic.

Steve Pate, Jeff Sluman, Joe Don Blake, Eduardo Romero and Kirk Triplett were tied for second at 68.

Calcavecchia, a playoff winner last year at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge for his first Champions Tour title, made a 20-foot putt on No. 8 after his 4-iron approach sailed over the flag.

''Had that not gone in, I still would have made birdie and been 4 under,'' he said. ''It went in, which is great. Then, like I always do, I tried to stay aggressive, keep making birdies and shoot low as I could.''

Calcavecchia birdied two of the first three holes on the back nine and got to 8 under. But on the par-5, 498-yard 18th, he found the sand twice and took a bogey 6.

''Taking a 6 on an easy 5 kind wrecked an otherwise great day,'' he said. ''I had a great score but you hate doing that. All in all, I played great

Olympic Club greens improved for US Open

It is an image the folks at Olympic Club would love to forget.

Payne Stewart, the Ozark hillbilly in the dapper plus-fours, had been leading the 1998 U.S. Open since almost the opening shot. Then, on Friday afternoon, Stewart struck a birdie putt on the 18th green that came within a whisker of going in. But rather than stopping an inch or so from the hole, the ball began rolling back toward the front of the green. At it picked up steam, the groans from the gallery intensified.

This wasnt the first time goofy golf had broken out on the 18th green. Throughout the day, balls had trundled up to the back-left hole location, stopped briefly, then rolled back down the hill.

John Daly let the USGA have it, saying, Thank God our tour doesnt do that. It was absolutely stupid. We work too hard out there, and people watching on TV have to think, These guys are idiots.

Kirk Triplett didnt voice his frustrations: he showed them. After his ball reached the hole and started rolling back, Triplett (who was going to mi

Kirk Triplett put together the best round of golf anyone had ever played Sunday in the Principal Charity Classic.

But Jay Haas was brilliant for three rounds instead of one, proving yet again that nobody can dominate the Glen Oaks Country Club like he can.

Haas finished with a 16-under 197 total to win the tournament by five strokes, becoming the first golfer to win the Champions Tour event in Iowa three times.

Haas, the winner in 2007 and 2008, led by three shots after shooting 65 in the second round and made it stand up with a final round 5-under 66.

Haas' 16-under tied the tournament mark set by Gil Morgan in 2006 and matched the largest victory of the season in the Champions Tour.

''(Saturday) I really played well, but (Sunday) was a special round. And to kind of take hold of it and not give them a chance...that was pretty special,'' Haas said.

Triplett set the course record with a 9-under 62 and finished second at 11-under 202 along with Larry Mize. Fred Funk and Tom Lehman tied

‘Good One’

(From the ARMCHAIR GOLF archives.)KIRK TRIPLETT IS WORKING on something. Only he and his caddie know for sure. Actually, I’m going to say that his caddie doesn’t know. He’s working the towel. That’s what he does.If you’ve ever watched Tour pros beat balls, you know that after the initial excitement wears off it’s pretty boring. Pick any guy out there and watch them hit for a while. You’ll see what I mean. Here’s what’s going through my mind as I watch PGA Tour journeyman Kirk Triplett and his caddie.them go through the bag—the wedges, the irons, the metals—and slowly dismantle that perfectly stacked pyramid of shiny white golf balls on the practice tee:“Good one. Good one. Good one. Good one. Good one.” (Player pauses to stare at something or chuckle with caddie.) “Good one. Good one. Good one.”They might be working on something. They might just be warming up. They might be showing off. I have no idea. All I’ve got is “Good one. Good one. Good one.”I have a suspicion that I
