All of the Marlins eligible for free agency have filed, as expected. Nick Johnson made an impact with the Marlins. But unless Florida works out a contract with the veteran, those 35 games may be the extent of Johnson's tenure with the organization. Helms and teammate Ross Gload, who has 21 pinch-hits, need one more between them to tie the major-league record for most pinch-hits by a tandem. ``It means a lot to us because that's been our role this year,'' Helms said.

Last night Ross Gload set the single-season record for pinch hits by a Marlin. Ross Gload delivered his 20th pinch hit, a single off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth, setting a new single-season team record. Gload and teammate Wes Helms need to combine on three more pinch hits to tie the single-season major league record by a pair of teammates. The Grits rarely disappoint. Congratulations Ross!

Ross Gload and Wes Helms are closing in on the major league record for hits by a pinch-hitting tandem. Ross Gload closing in on Marlins record Ross Gload's eighth-inning, one-out single was his 18th pinch hit, leaving him one shy of matching Lenny Harris' single-season franchise record (2005). Gload improved to 18 for 60 as a pinch hitter.

The Royals have traded first baseman Ross Gload to the Marlins for a player to be named later. Gload, who is hitting .280 in 22 games this spring, was drafted by the Marlins in the 13th round of 1997 amateur draft. Gload was beat out by Mike Jacobs for the starting job, something Gload new coming into Spring Training. The Royals went out and acquired Jacobs hoping he would bring more power to a potentially dangerous lineup.

"As long as there is a uniform on the other side there's an opportunity," Gload said. "I think I can fit in well with a National League ballclub. Ideally, I would have liked to been here. I wish there was a spot."

The Pirates shipped eight players out today, leaving just one cut left to be made before the Opening Day roster is set. Virgil Vazquez, Jason Davis, Chris Bootcheck, Jeff Salazar, Andy Phillips, Garrett Jones, Denny Bautista, and Eric Kratz were all cut this morning, leaving one spot left in the bullpen to decide.
