Tiger chasing Watney at Sherwood

Nick Watney is playing well in any kind of weather.

Watney made birdie on the 14th hole at Sherwood during a strong back nine that carried him to a 5-under-par 67 and a two-shot lead Thursday in the World Challenge. Watney won a month ago in stifling conditions in Malaysia. This day was cool and overcast, with fog rolling off the foothills. No matter. He did well enough to surge past Jim Furyk, Keegan Bradley and Graeme McDowell.

Tiger Woods, the tournament host and defending champion, had a number of good par saves and scratched out a 70.

The World Challenge doesn't count as an official win, though it awards world ranking points.

Watney keeps his mind on winning

Nick Watney was the second player this weekend to come to the The Mines Resort's 18th hole needing birdie to fire 59. Both Watney and Bo Van Pelt fell short of golf's magic number, but Watney's stellar round was enough for him to win the CIMB Classic.

Watney's 10-under-par 61 on Sunday gave him a one-shot victory over defending champion Bo Van Pelt and Robert Garrigus. Watney finished at 22-under 262 (71-65-65-61).

Here are Five Things to take away from the week that was in Malaysia:

1. In the Nick of time

Watney started the day four strokes back of the leaders, the long-hitting Garrigus and Van Pelt, who flirted with 59 one day earlier. Watney opened the front nine with two birdies and then birdied Nos. 6, 8 and 9 en route to a 5-under 30 on the front nine.

Six birdies in a seven-hole stretch starting at No. 11 vaulted Watney past the overnight leaders -- Van Pelt and Garrigus -- and Chris Kirk, who made an early move.

"I got off to a pretty good start. I saw Tiger playing well. I

Watney asks wife to carry the bag for sick caddie

When heat stroke felled his caddie late in the first round of the CIMB Classic, Nick Watney's wife Amber stepped in to help.

His eventual win Sunday in the $6.1 tournament was a long way off when she volunteered to pick up the bag when regular caddie Chad Reynolds was taken to the first-aid room and put on an I-V drip at the steamy Mines Resort.

She isn't a golfer and admits she doesn't have a clue about how to read a yardage book, but she gave plenty of moral support when she heaved the bag on the 18th hole and walked with her husband to the end of his first round Thursday.

Watney used a local caddie for the second round Friday, then Reynolds was fit enough to return for work on the weekend.

Amber Watney said as the daughter of a seasoned tour caddie, she was willing to negotiate on the fees after her husband won the $1.3 million first prize. Watney narrowly missed out on a 59 in the last round when he bogeyed the last hole. Perhaps it'll come into Watney's calculations when he's

Watney shoots 61 to win in Malaysia

Nick Watney missed a chance for a 59 on Sunday in his CIMB Classic victory, closing with a bogey for a course-record 10-under 61 at The Mines.

Needing a birdie on the par-4 18th for a 59, Watney drove into the left rough, failed to reach the green with his approach and left his long birdie pitch just short of the putting surface.

The American finished at 22-under 262 and earned $1,098,000 in the unofficial PGA Tour event.

Defending champion Bo Van Pelt and Robert Garrigus tied for second, a stroke back. Needing a birdie on 18 to force a playoff, Van Pelt saved par for a 66. Garrigus also finished with a 66.

Tiger Woods shot a 63 to tie for fourth at 19 under.

Watney wins at Bethpage Black

Nick Watney salvaged a dismal season with a victory Sunday at The Barclays that was timely in so many ways.

Watney turned a two-shot deficit against Sergio Garcia into a three-shot lead in four holes around the turn at Bethpage Black, and then hung on to close with a 2-under 69 and capture the opening playoff event for the FedEx Cup. Watney won by three over Brandt Snedeker.

Watney is assured a shot at the $10 million prize at the Tour Championship next month. Winning against one of the strongest fields of the year also puts him in the conversation as a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup. Davis Love III will select four players after next week's tournament outside Boston.

Garcia shot 75 and tied for third.

Watney wins The Barclays at Bethpage

Nick Watney salvaged a dismal season Sunday at The Barclays with a victory that could not have come at a better time.

Watney turned a two-shot deficit against Sergio Garcia into a three-shot lead in a decisive four-hole stretch around the turn at Bethpage Black, and no one got closer than two shots the rest of the way. Watney made a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 2-under 69 to capture the opening playoff event for the FedEx Cup.

He wound up winning by three shots over Brandt Snedeker, who birdied the last hole for a 70. Garcia made bogey on the 18th for a 75.

The win means Watney goes to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings and is assured a shot at the $10 million prize at the Tour Championship next month. Perhaps more importantly, it could be a big step toward an event that doesn't pay anything at all - the Ryder Cup.

Winning against one of the strongest fields of the year at least puts him in the conversation to be one of four captain's picks for the Sept. 28-30 matches at Medinah. Davis

Nick Watney,Sergio Garcia Tied For Lead At The Barclays Vijay Singh Only One Stroke Back

Sergio Garcia has found something in his putting stroke that has been missing for at least 4 years. For the second week in a row Garcia is in contention in a PGA Tour Event. Garcia and Watney are tied at the top of the leader board with a host of players tied for second place including the old man Vijay Singh. At 49 years young Vijay is no stranger to chasing the Fed x Cup, He was the FedEx Cup Champion in 2008.
Nick Watney had a bumpy day at Bethpage, his second round included 4 birdies 4 bogeys and 1 eagle to keep him on top of the leader-board. Sergio had a more conventional approach to moving up the board, he had 4 birdies and only 1 bogey on his way to a 3 under par 68 to go with his first round 66. With the projected cut at plus 1 there are a host of players including Jim Furyk who won’t be around for the weekend.
Phil Mickelson finds himself tied for 53rd after a 3 over par round today. Tiger Woods is in a tie for 8th after posting a 2 under 69 and is 5 under par for the tour...

Tiger likely to miss cut; Watney leads

Nick Watney answered what he referred to as a wake-up call at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Tiger Woods might need one.

Watney had gone nine straight rounds on the PGA Tour without breaking 70 and had failed to crack the top 10 in all nine of his stroke-play tournaments. He worked hard to change that, and it paid off Friday with an 8-under 64 that put him atop the leaderboard at Quail Hollow.

''I think last week was a wake-up call for me,'' said Watney, who missed the cut in New Orleans. ''And I've worked really hard these five days leading into this event. I think it just shows I'm making progress. Who knows what's going to happen this weekend, but I'm really excited for it. More hard work, and hopefully I'll be in this position a lot more.''

Woods wasn't sure about the weekend, either, though he was certain he would not be spending time at Quail Hollow.

He failed to birdie any of the par 5s, missed a 4-foot birdie putt on his 17th hole with the cu

Watney takes lead as Woods heads home

The Wells Fargo Championship looks like it will be missing Tiger Woods on the weekend for the third straight year.

Woods couldn't buy a putt in his round of 73 and was at even-par 144, almost certain to miss the cut for the eighth time in his career. Instead, the leaderboard was filled with a couple of players looking to turn their games around.

Nick Watney, who has not had a top 10 in stroke play all year, shot a 64 to take a one-shot lead over Webb Simpson (68) among early starters in the second round. Watney had gone 10 straight rounds without breaking 70 until arriving at Quail Hollow.

Among those two shots behind was Stewart Cink, winless since he captured the British Open at Turnberry in 2009.

Something amiss for Tiger in defeat

Nick Watney was off to the side of the green, studying his yardage book, trying to decide what he should hit off the tee on the first playoff hole.

He was one-up at the time and safely in for par, meaning his opponent needed to win the hole to extend their second-round match at the Accenture Match Play championship.

And it was a five-and-a-half footer for birdie, straightforward, but not an absolute certainty on the perplexing greens at Dove Mountain.

But Watney was sure he'd be going to extra holes because the man standing over the putt was Tiger Woods, and everyone knows he doesn't miss big putts on the big stage.

"No question I thought he was going to make it," Watney said.

"And I think everybody thought he was going to make it, to be honest. The old adage is expect your opponent to make it, and when it's Tiger Woods, you really expect him to make it."

But he was remembering the old Tiger; the legend of yesteryear.
