<title>Canizares, Hendry lead after 1st round in Perth</title>
<description>Alejandro Canizares shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to share a one-stroke lead with Michael Hendry after the opening round of the Perth International.

Canizares had seven birdies in a bogey-free round at Lake Karrinyup to take the early lead before Hendry put together five birdies on his second nine to join him. Emiliano Grillo is one stroke behind the leaders, with Paul Casey and Andrew Johnson a further shot back at 67.

Charl Schwartzel and Jason Dufner finished tied for 29th with 16 other players at 1 under.

Canizares, who won the last of his five European Tour titles in 2006, chipped in at the short No. 8 for his fourth and final birdie of the front nine. He then made three on the back nine.

''It was a good round,'' the Spaniard said. ''I hit the ball really well and made some putts, so I'm really happy.

''I played pretty steady the whole round and gave myself plenty of chances. I think I only missed two greens in the whole round.''

      <title>Whiteford takes Avantha lead after 2nd round</title>
<description>Peter Whiteford of Scotland shot a 4-under 68 Friday to take a two-shot lead after the second round of the Avantha Masters.

Whiteford, who shared the first-round lead with Alejandro Canizares of Spain after a 66, moved to 10-under 134 at the halfway stage as he seeks his first win on the European Tour.

Canizares is tied for 16th after a second-round 73 left him with a 139 total. Prom Meesawat of Thailand is second at 8 under after shooting 64 in the second round.

Whiteford, who had five birdies and sank a 30-yard eagle putt on the par-five sixth, said he had a fine day despite starting play in cold weather.

''Once it warmed up a bit I started to play better and gave myself a few chances,'' Whiteford said. ''I wouldn't say the swing feels brilliant, but sometimes that's when you play your best golf - when you're struggling a wee bit.''
