Wilson Feels Offseason of Focus on Football Will Translate into Playing Time

With injuries to the receiver unit for the Browns hindering its progress early in training camp, now is the time for 2006 third-round pick Travis Wilson to show what he can do, and finally do his part in making an impact on a roster where for the last two years he's been an afterthought.

Ouch. Not Good.

What we've been fearing and hearing whispers of has come to pass. Browns wide receiver Joe Jurevicius is likely to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning that he is out for at least the first six weeks of the season. WTAM got the story this morning during an interview with Browns GM Phil Savage. James Walker of ESPN reports that this is indeed the third surgery that Joe has had on the injured knee. The first was to fix the injury, and the other two to clean out the staph infection.

The fear is that even after the six weeks is over, Jurevicius' knee might still keep him out of action. Joe had said previously that this would likely be his last year, but the Browns may have to accept that Joe has played his last down as a Cleveland Brown.

Joe is of course a local guy, and one of the good ones. He came from Mentor, Ohio and is a fixture in the Northeast Ohio community. His work for the March of Dimes has led to a scholarship named after his infant son Michael who passed away. WFNY hopes that Joe is able to recover from this and take the field again. Not for the fans, but for him. Good luck Joe.

Man down in Cleveland

It's beginning to look more and more like the Cleveland Browns will be without Joe Jurevicius when the season begins. Jurevicius underwent a simple knee scope back in January and now will most likely start the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. This is a big blow to a team with very high hopes as Joe is a stud in the slot position, and is coming off the best season of his career.

PUP List For Jurevicius

With the recent revaluations that Joe Jurevicius's June 30th surgery will take longer to heal than originally believed, it looks as if the 11 year vet will start out the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Meaning that Jurevicius could be available for the week 7 match-up at Washington.
This now opens the door for a battle for the 3rd WR spot. Who will end up getting it, well your guess is as good as mine. But the canidates include:
FA acquisition Kevin Kasper, who is entering his 6th season after bouncing around teams the past few seasons. 3rd year underachiever Travis Wilson, who was quite possibly the biggest surprise of the team's mini-camp, for the way he was performing so well. Return man extraordinare, Joshua Cribbs, is also a possiblility. The last and possibly most unlikely is rookie Paul Hubbard, who the team actually drafted to be Jurevicius's future replacement.
Personally I would try Wilson, and Kasper as the replacement in the the pre-season first before anyone else. With Wilson it's about time he proves his worth, and Kasper has been around before and of the four has the most experience. I would really hate to see Cribbs taken away from what he does best, special teams, however I also feel that there is an untapped potential for him as a WR/RB combo player with some trick plays here and there. Finally I say we let Hubbard develop a bit before throwing him out there as our #3 but like the others he deserves a chance to get on the field and prove his worth.

Jurevicius Having Second Surgery

Joe Jurevicius has had his second surgery to "clean out" further clean out his surgically repaired knee. This news now begs the question as to if Jurevicius will be ready in time for the Browns training camp later this month
This only furthers the notion that this will probably be Jurevicius's last season in the league, and I really hope to see him contribute to the team this season as well. He has been a vocal leader and it's nice to see him back home, where I know he so badly wants to win it one last time.

A Travis Wilson Revival?

If you're just a casual fan of the Browns, you may not even know who Travis Wilson is. Taken in the third round just a few years back, Wilson was the self-proclaimed "best receiver in the draft." With that being the case, the Browns got a huge steal. With reality being the case, Wilson has caught two balls in the last two seasons - both in 2006.

When the team agreed to terms with Donte Stallworth, we decided to give Travis a good, old fashioned eulogy, assuming that we were adding another player to the list of what-could-have-beens. Surely, the drafting of wide receiver Paul Hubbardwas just a nail in the figurative coffin. Right?

Or, perhaps it was just a huge wake-up call.

Yesterday, Lane Atkins from the Orange and Brown report listed his "Ten Telling Items" from the sidelines of recent Browns practices. (Note: I strongly recommend reading the list, as it definitely makes you even more anxious for the start of the season) While many of the bits were positive, this one stood out the most:

WR Travis Wilson looks much like the player this organization anticipated when selecting him out of Oklahoma. Interestingly, Wilson is running solid routes, making catches and most importantly has knowledge of what the expectations are. For the first time, Wilson is consistent in getting his head around in receiving drills. This may seem to fall into 'who cares ' type category, but to succeed at this level a receiver needs to get his head around, find the ball in-flight and fight for the reception. Wilson has been on the mark.

While part of me wants to classify this as "too little, too late," it has to be exciting news. Injuries have been the beast of many teams' burden. Adding Stallworth and bumping Joe Jurevicius to the third receiver does wonders for depth. Having a much-improved Wilson can only make that better.

Wide receivers tend to take the next step during their third season, so this would make sense from a statistical point of view. The only issue is that Wilson really hasn't taken any step as of yet - so any sort of production would be an improvement. We traded a 1,000 yard running back for Tim Carter only a year ago. While that was done to avoid a roster bonus, just think of the value of Wilson if he could Carter-esque numbers?

Of course, he could just fade in to oblivion and business would carry on as usual. But wouldn't it be nice to get something out of a former first-day selection? A kid can dream…

Monday Afternoon Link Fest

Here are some links for this beautiful Monday afternoon (at least where I am sitting). Additionally, as all of you know, the Dallas Cowboys are the Browns' first opponent in the upcoming 2008 season. There is also a good chance that the arrogance of "America's Team" makes you at least chuckle, especially after yet another disappointing showing by them in the playoffs. If that is the case, then here is the best news you will hear today: the Browns are 3-point favorites in that Week One match-up. Should be interesting leading up to the game.
- First, the Browns were apparently interested in acquiring veteran receiver Eric Parker from the San Diego Chargers. Now, the team could be interested in the Jaguars' Matt Jones. This certainly raises some questions, as the Browns originally seemed solid at the receiver position. Perhaps Joe Jurevicius has more physical ailments than we could imagine and can contribute even less than that of a third receiver. I wouldn't be suprised if he gave the Browns the go-ahead to go shopping for yet another wide receiver, as he wasn't shy to originally inform them he was incapable of handling the duties of the #2 wide receiver.
- Terry Pluto thinks the Browns should shop one of their tight ends or fullbacks in order to obtain a cornerback they so desperately need.
- Is rookie linebacker Beau Bell going to be enough of a hard-nosed player for the Browns?
Around the AFC North:
- Running back Rudi Johnson - isn't it great Cincinnati is back to being the lovable Bungles? - has had an impressive off-season.
Around the NFL:
- Our blogger over at Black & Teal is certainly making an impression with The Landry Hat. Apparently, Dan can't seem to handle sarcasm directed at his 'Boys, which led to something similar to a childish fit of anger followed by a storm of angry Cowboys fans. Jeanne gets a smiley face next to her name in my book.
And finally…
- Wall-E and the future of sports (p.s. I NEED to see Wall-E, in the worst way).
And while I am on the topic of movies, let me remind you to NEVER see "The Love Guru." That is, unless your only form of entertainment and satisfaction is found through wasting your money. In that case, just burn it at home. Mike Myers' comedy is currently dead and buried and, by the looks of it, I would hope to never see it resurrected.

Where do your allegiances lie: college or pro?

"...what do you do when a player you disliked in college is suddenly on your team, or even worse, a player you loved in school quickly becomes a rival? I can attest, the former is not very hard to overcome. I can forgive Jon Runyan's Michigan days because of the way he steamrolls d-linemen weekly for the Eagles..."
