Paire easily wins France opener

Benoit Paire took just 45 minutes to beat Adrian Menendez-Maceiras of Spain 6-0, 6-2 in the Open Sud de France first round on Tuesday.

The Frenchman had nine aces and did not face a break point. He used his powerful forehand to often force Menendez-Maceiras to the back of the court and broke the Spaniard's serve five times.

Paire amused himself in the last game with a half-volley played through his legs, which he followed up with a drop shot. He sealed victory on his third match point when Menendez-Maceiras hit a forehand wide.

Paire next plays Steve Darcis of Belgium, who beat Adrian Mannarino of France 6-4, 7-6 (0).

Serbia advances to Davis Cup quarters

Serbia reached the Davis Cup quarterfinals when Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic beat Belgian duo Ruben Bemelmans and Steve Darcis 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in Saturday's doubles to take an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Serbia had an unexpectedly tough start to the series as Troicki had to come from two sets down to beat David Goffin in Friday's opening singles match, but faced little difficulty the rest of the way.

Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic swept Olivier Rochus and the doubles team took control early before a temporary hiccup in the third set.

The result turns Sunday's reverse singles into two meaningless matches.

Serbia won despite playing without the ninth-ranked Janko Tipsarevic, who is injured. They will face the winners of the match between Brazil and the United States.

Berdych, Querrey win in Winston-Salem

Second-seeded Tomas Berdych advanced to the semifinals in the Winston-Salem Open on Thursday, rallying to beat Steve Darcis 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Berdych will face seventh-seeded Sam Querrey in the final hard-court tournament before next week's U.S. Open in New York. The American beat fourth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3).

In the late quarterfinals at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex, top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faced sixth-seeded Marcel Granollers, and third-seeded defending champion John Isner played David Goffin.

While Berdych's run of games held on serve ended at 29 with a pair of breaks in the first set, he had 10 aces - seven in the second set alone - and broke Darcis' serve seven times.

That included a run of six consecutive breaks over the second and third sets, and Berdych won the last nine games to advance to the semifinals for the third time this season.

''He was playing really smart, so I needed to change something,'' Berdych said. ''I stepped a li

Roddick out at Winston-Salem Open

Andy Roddick was eliminated from the Winston-Salem Open on Wednesday, losing a third-round match to Belgium's Steve Darcis in straight sets.

The fifth-seeded Roddick, a former world No. 1 player now ranked 21st, fell to the 81st-ranked Darcis 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3) in the final hard-court tournament before next week's US Open in Flushing Meadow, NY.

''I did not expect this,'' Darcis said in his heavily-accented English. ''When I came here, I was not playing so good. But I had two good first matches, and here I play very good tennis. I served very good, and I tried to be aggressive when I could.

''OK, Andy didn't play his best tennis, but for me it's a great win, especially before the U.S. Open.''

Roddick had 13 aces -- the fastest recorded at 135 mph -- but the 2003 US Open champion struggled to find consistency with his ground strokes and Darcis' short game, whose drop shots caught Roddick flat-footed several times.

Roddick's frustration was

Roddick Claims 600th win by Reaching Eastbourne Final

American Andy Roddick reached his 600th career victory on the ATP World Tour when his opponent Steve Darcis retired with a back injury at the AEGON International at Eastbourne. Roddick was leading 6-3, 3-1.
Roddick: “There’s a lot of times when you make plans where you draw the perfect scenario and you draw up a script and it doesn’t work out. That’s probably 80 per cent of the time in sports, 90 per cent of the time in sports. This week has worked out. Regardless of what happens, I’ll go into Wimbledon with some wins behind me and some confidence on a surface I’m very comfortable on, so I feel like I got my game back a little bit this week.”

Andy Roddick earns 600th win

Andy Roddick claimed the 600th singles win of his career to reach the Eastbourne final on Friday when Belgian Steve Darcis retired after receiving treatment to his back.

Roddick was leading their semifinal 6-3, 3-1 when Darcis stopped, leaving the American to face defending champion Andreas Seppi of Italy in his first final since winning Memphis in February 2011.

The third-seeded Seppi defeated American Ryan Harrison 7-5, 6-1.

Unseeded Tamira Paszek of Austria rallied to beat women's defending champion Marion Bartoli 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and in the final will play fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany, who beat Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-3.

Players had great difficulty in gusts up to 50 mph (80 kph).

Sixth-seeded Roddick always held the upper hand against Darcis, and after an exchange of service breaks midway through the opening set he broke to lead 5-3 when Darcis made a forehand error.

The Belgian then dropped his serve at the start of the second set after leading 40-0, and retired

Darcis advances to SAP Open quarters

Steve Darcis upset former champion and fourth-seeded Radek Stepanek in the afternoon session of the second round of the SAP Open, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7) on Thursday.

Stepanek of the Czech Republic is ranked 29th in the world while Darcis is ranked 72nd in the world and is 22nd-seed of the tournament.

Belgium's Darcis needed tiebreakers in both sets to defeat the 2009 SAP Open champion.

It was the first meeting between the two since 2008 when they split their two matches.

Fifth-seeded Julien Benneteau of France defeated Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, 6-2, 6-4 and will face Darcis in the quarterfinals.

Sixth-seeded Kevin Anderson of the United States and qualifier Dimitar Kutrovsky of Bulgaria also advanced to the quarterfinals.
