Querrey saves USA in Davis Cup

Sam Querrey saved the United States from an embarrassing collapse in Jacksonville, Fla.

Querrey defeated Thiago Alves of Brazil 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Sunday to give the US a 3-2 victory in the first round of the Davis Cup. With the victory, the Americans advance to face Serbia in the quarterfinals, which will be played in April.

The US had led 2-0 after Querrey and John Isner easily won Friday's singles matches, but Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares kept the Brazilians alive with a stunning, five-set win over the world's No. 1 ranked doubles team of twin brothers Mike and Bob Bryan on Saturday.

Then, in the first singles match Sunday, Thomaz Bellucci rallied to beat Isner 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-3 to force the fifth and deciding match -- and set up Querrey to save the day for the United States.

Brazil forces deciding match vs. US in Davis Cup

Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci beat John Isner in five sets Sunday to force a fifth and deciding match against the United States in the first round of the Davis Cup.

Bellucci beat his higher-ranked opponent 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 4-6, 6-3 to pull the Brazilians into a 2-2 tie with the Americans, leaving the second singles match later Sunday between Sam Querrey and Brazil's Thiago Alves to decide which team advances to the World Group quarterfinals against Serbia in April.

It was Brazil's second five-set victory in as many matches. After Isner and Querrey dominated the opening singles with straight-sets victories, Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares kept the Brazilians alive with a win over the world's No. 1 ranked doubles team of twin brothers Mike and Bob Bryan on Saturday.

Brazilians Melo/Soares stun the Bryans in day 2 Davis Cup action

With an impeccable 22-2 record in Davis Cup doubles going into today’s match, most people had penned in a US victory for the Bryan brothers in yesterday’s doubles rubber against Brazil. But in tennis it’s never safe to count on the better team on paper. Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares have had success playing the Bryans in the past, having beaten the brothers twice, although on clay. This was a whole new ballgame, playing to keep their country alive in the tie, on foreign soil, against the best doubles team in the world. It was almost inconceivable that Brazil could pull off such a victory under the circumstances.

Team Brazil came out to play from the first point, as Bruno Soares put in it the post match press conference, “to beat these guys, you have to be 110%. Today we showed we were 110%, most important for five sets. We didn’t drop for one second.” He was correct. Even when the team went down three set points in the first set tiebreak, they kept calm and were able to go on to wi...

DAVIS CUP: BRAZIL STAYS ALIVE
Melo and Soares upset the Bryans in 5 sets; U.S. up 2-1

By Junior Williams

(February 2, 2013) JACKSONVILLE — On Groundhog Day here in the United States, the conventional wisdom was that the world’s top-doubles team would clinch a first round Davis Cup World Group victory and ensure a long winter for Brazil’s team.

But as any Brazilian will tell you — it’s actually summer south of the Equator, and it’s not over yet.

Serveral hours after the American weather groundhog Punxsutawney Phil failed to see his shadow and predicted an early spring, Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares kept Brazil’s Davis Cup hopes alive by stunning Americans Bob and Mike Bryan 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in what was a high-quality and intense match. The U.S. now leads the tie 2-1.

For the Bryans — who are coming off their 13th major doubles title by winning the Australian Open — Saturday’s defeat marks only their third loss in 23 career Davis Cup m

Brazil's doubles team of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares upset the top-ranked Mike and Bob Bryan 7-6 (6), 6-7 (7), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and kept the United States from clinching the first-round Davis Cup match.

It was only the third time the Bryan brothers had dropped a Davis Cup match. It was just the second time that they had dropped a five-set match in ATP competition. Their only other five-set defeat was in a 1999 match at Wimbledon.

The United States has a 2-1 advantage heading into Sunday's reverse singles.

Refuel with NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony

New York Knicks and five-time NBA All-Star and Olympic gold medalist Carmelo Anthony, or “Melo” as he’s nicknamed, may not be well known among tennis fans — but he should be! “Melo” (don’t confuse him with the Brazilian doubles player Marcelo Melo!) has been around tennis and even incorporates a tennis ball in his training workouts to strengthen his dribbling skills.
