Plaza de toros, Las Ventas, Madrid

The acoustics are astounding; they say when there's a bullfight, you can hear the bull groaning and moaning in even the last row. This weekend, you'll hear the powerful grunting by the matador Rafael Nadal as he and his compatriots aim to demolish the Americans on the red dirt. Yesterday Spain won both rubbers: Rafa over Sam Querrey 67 64 63 64 and then Andy Roddick, in typical fashion, blew it in the 5th for David "Ferru" Ferrer to take it 76 26 16 64 86. However Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan rescued the US today defeating tennis's best looking, Nando Verdasco and Feli Lopez 46 64 63 46 64! Tomorrow ARod must beat Rafa and Sam Querrey must be Ferru. Hmmm...I'm nervous for the Americans.

New K Swiss as Seen on Mardy Fish -- Casual Tennis Style for Serious Players

Many sponsors appear to require their players to wear the same outfit throughout an entire tournament. K-Swiss lets Mardy switch it up a bit within the line; nice for a guy who doesn't appear to want to look too done-up. Recently he wore the loose fitting, performance styles above. The top is the new K-Swiss short sleeve v-neck, $50 USD and long mesh shorts, $48 (10"inseam). Both are performance pieces that help control heat and wick moisture. In earlier rounds, Mardy wore the new short sleeve crew neck in charcoal, $50 (not pictured). Looked like a simple tee but body...

August 31, 2008 - US Open

As one might have suspected, James' match with friend Mardy Fish was a bit of an awkward affair- for the crowd and the players. But it was clear that Mardy was the better player on this night though, dominating with his serve and doing a good job at attacking James' second serve. The final score was 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4).

USA network joined the match a game into the proceedings, and James was already down a break. He got it back, but immediately went down another break to lose 6-3.

James got only one break point opportunity in the second, also losing 6-3. James was down another break in the third and Mardy was attempting to serve out the match at 5-4, but nerves got hold of him, and the two battled to a tie-break.
After going up 4-2 in the breaker, Mardy reeled off five points in a row to take the match and move onto the fourth round for the first time ever at the Open. He gets Monfils next.

So a tough Open for James, one in which it never appeared he was totally locked in to his game.

Even though the result of the tournament can not be pleased for himself and his fans. But I think he still did all he can for the match at least. And that is enough. Maybe he needs some time to have rest. After having finished the tournament which represented his country, he had to flighted to the USA to prepare the US Open. I know it is so tired that few person can bear. He needs applause.

I just want to say, keep the confidence and trust tomorrow will be better !

Donald Young: Future of American Tennis?

Tonight, Donald Young and James Blake played 5 sets of tennis in the 1st round of the US Open, while most of you were sleeping off your Olympic hangover. Eventually, the better player prevailed with the #9 seed Blake winning after the match was 4-4 in the 5th set, but Blake may not be regarded as the better player for long. It's no small irony that the emergence of Donald Young may come at the expense of James Blake, if only in fatigue for the moment. Credit Blake with surviving the challenge in the 5th and keeping his composure.

Donald Young could be the next great American tennis player.

While still showing his youth and immaturity at times, Young displayed a level of talent rarely seen from such a youthful player. With a dominant forehand, strong lefty serve, and crisp volleys, Donald Young was able to dominate Blake at times, the same James Blake who beat Federer in the Olympics. Young's speed around the court was eye-opening at times. He also demonstrated mental strength and maturity, recovering from 6-1 blowouts in the 1st and 3rd sets to level the match. How about Young having the composure to hit a winner on a break point with a broken string during the 5th set? Blake was by no means perfect, but Young was certainly applying some serious pressure.

Vision of the future, but with bigger trophies?

For the American tennis fans frustrated with the inability of Blake or Roddick to break into the top 5 recently, the same fans who watch Mardy Fish look awesome and then terrible, this could be the beginning of a brave new era. Young is still only 19, but won 3 of the 4 junior majors. He took a set off Novak Djokovic two years ago, and now he has taken Blake to 5 sets in the US Open! Young has been the #1 junior player in the world and was the youngest junior champion in a major ever, and could build on these experiences to bigger and better things. Only #102 in the world, Young certainly has a long way to go and should not be crowned as the next great hope quite yet, but things are looking up. James Blake played well tonight, and Donald Young gave him everything he wanted and more.

Always Close and No Surprise

Hewitt nearly Blewitt again-why does he always get himself into these situations? He's not supposed to lose til he meets Feds in the 4R, but he loves them 5-setters as Bec sits there with her flawless makeup and fake pouty lips. Today's SHOCKERS, were (a) David "Social Body" Nalbandian committing suicide in straight sets to Canada's Dancevic-eh, he's gotta be of Serbian or Croatian descent anyway, with a name like that, (b) Ivo Karlovic losing in 4, and (c) Marat Safin showing up to win, though when he goes to a tiebreak, it usually *doesn't* go his way. As for American players, they're made for the fast grass, but Kevin Kim, "Spadea I Ain't Afraida Ya," Querry, and Ginepri fell today in style. Vince always goes the distance and fights hard. We all know Ginepri's a great player who never quite made Patty Mac's roster, other than as an alternate. Querry's a solid alternate and gave the Mosquito a pretty good fight today. Bobby Reynolds is the only American who has made the 2R so far, but only b/c Volandri retired. Blake, ARod, and Fish are the ones to watch now, but we also got the adorable Donald "DY" Young, Jesse Levine, and giant John Isner. U-S-A! U-S-A! Eager to watch what happens!

A New Era Has Dawned...

and it doesn't include Rafa Nadal and The Federer Express. Today at the Pacific Life Open in Cali's dessert, Indian Wells, our beloved NoDjo (Novak Djokovic) tore apart wedgy-picker Nadal 6-3 6-2, and American Mardy Fish slapped Feds with the same score. I saw the Federer-Sampras exhibition a couple of weeks ago at MSG and even THAT was a close one for Feds...and I don't think he was tryin' any less. Feds' long time gf, Mirka Vavrinekc wasn't even in the crowd...no Tiger either. And perhaps Fish is our best American hope now, over ARod?

1995 Curse Over for U-S-A!

We haven't hoisted the Davis Cup since Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, and Todd Martin were on the US team. This afternoon in Portland, OR, the Bryan brothers brought the Cup back after a 12-yr drought, beating Russians Andreev & Davydenko in 3. Roddick killed Tursunov yesterday in 3, but Blake needed 4 sets, 3 of which were tiebreaks, against Youzhny. Everyone was there: Donald "DY" Young, John Isner, Robby Ginepri, Mardy Fish all watched while the crowd, including the wild NetHeads, yelled out in pure Davis Cup style.
