(February 14, 2013) São Paulo – Brazil’s biggest hope of a home winner ended today, after the country’s No. 1, Thomaz Bellucci, was upset by Filippo Volandri, in two sets. In a match full of errors, the fifth seed of the ATP 250 São Paulo fell in the second round to the Italian, 6-3, 6-2, and the crowd wasn’t happy. The 8,000 fans present booed their local man off of the court.

“It’s very sad getting booed in your country. This has never happened to me in my career before. It’s hard knowing people don’t appreciate our sport here”, said the 35th player in the rankings. “It’s never easy for me to play in Brazil. I’m always extra nervous here.”

“Here in Brazil, the mentality is different, people don’t appreciate athletes like they do in Europe or America,” complained Bellucci, that, in 2010, had a career high of 21. “It’s hard for the crowd to understand that I have bad days.
Andujar Rallies Past Volandri at Serbia Open

Top seed Pablo Andujar came back to defeat Filippo Volandri 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Serbia Open.
“It was a difficult match for me,” said Andujar. “The conditions weren’t easy; the court was very fast and it was hot, which made it a little bit more difficult. Always in your first match you have to try and stay as focused as you can; it’s never going to be easy. I was down 6-4, 5-4 and I tried to continue playing my game and finally I made it and I’m really happy for that.”
Andujar goes on to face Czech Lukas Rosol on Friday, who defeated Romania’s Victor Hanescu 7-6(4), 6-3.

Andujar, Paire into quarters in Serbia

Top-seeded Pablo Andujar of Spain rallied past Filippo Volandri of Italy 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the Serbia Open quarterfinals on Thursday.

Andujar had to save 10 of 14 break points he faced to beat Volandri in 2 hours, 20 minutes spent in humid, 28-degree (82 F) heat.

''The conditions were not easy, the court was very fast and it was hot,'' Andujar said.

He was given a first-round bye, and aims to win his second title of the year after taking the title in Casablanca.

Benoit Paire of France also came from behind in beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in 2 hours, 24 minutes for his third quarterfinal of the year.

Lukas Rosol of Czech Republic defeated Victor Hanescu from Romania 7-6 (4), 6-3, and will meet Andujar next in his first career quarterfinal.

The match between third-seeded Jarkko Nieminen from Finland and Croat qualifier Antonio Veic was suspended because of heavy rain.

Nicolas Almagro of Spain defeated Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to retain his Brazil Open title on Sunday.

It was his third Brazil title, making him the most successful player at the ATP Tour 250 event in Latin America's biggest country.

Almagro broke Volandri late in the third set to clinch victory in just over two hours at Ibirapuera sporting complex in Sao Paulo, winning his 11th ATP tour title.

The 11th-ranked Almagro played the indoor clay-court tournament on a wild card because Davis Cup duties initially put his participation in doubt.

It was the eighth straight time a Spaniard had made it to the Brazil Open final, with the Spanish player winning six times.

Volandri broke Almagro in the second game of the match, but the Spaniard came back with three breaks to take control of the set despite making only 55 percent of his first serves.

The 26-year-old Almagro continued to play well in the second set but Volandri saved all five break opportunities he faced, then converted one of two cha

Almagro, Volandri reach Brazil final

Top seed and defending champion Nicolas Almagro of Spain defeated countryman Albert Ramos 6-4, 7-6 (4) to make it to the Brazil Open final on Saturday.

He will play Italian Filippo Volandri, who eliminated home-crowd favorite Thomaz Bellucci 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.

Almagro, the winner in Brazil in 2008 and 2011, broke the eighth-seeded Ramos once in each set at the Ibirapuera sporting complex.

Trying to win his 11th ATP Tour title, Almagro needed a wild card to play the indoor clay-court event because he initially wasn't certain if he would make the tournament because of his Davis Cup duties with Spain.

Fourth-seeded Bellucci won the first set against Volandri but couldn't keep up with the Italian at the end.

Seventh-seeded Albert Montanes of Spain lost to Filippo Volandri of Italy in the first round of the Brazil Open on Monday.

Volandri needed 65 minutes to defeat the 51st-ranked Montanes in Sao Paulo, converting four of his seven break points to advance to the second round in Sao Paulo.

Earlier, wild card Javier Marti of Spain defeated 2009 semifinalist Frederico Gil of Portugal 6-2, 6-4, while Brazil's Ricardo Mello beat Pere Riba of Spain 6-4, 6-2 in the late match.

Jeremy Chardy, Paul Capdeville, Igor Andreev and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo qualified for the main draw.

South America's biggest city is hosting the event for the first time after 11 editions in the northeastern city of Costa do Sauipe. The tournament is now being played indoors because of the rainy weather in Sao Paulo this time of the year.
