Bachinger moves into 2nd round of Chennai Open

Matthias Bachinger of Germany upset seventh-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 Tuesday at the Chennai Open.

Bachinger needed a little more than two hours to stave off a spirited rally from 2010 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Lu in a baseline slugfest that turned out to be the highlight of a day.

Also advancing to the second round were fifth-seeded Benoit Paire of France, German qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, Roberto Bautista Augut of Spain and India's Prakash Amritraj and Somdev Devvarman.

In the deciding third set, Bachinger broke serve in the fifth game and held to go up 4-2 before playing out the match.

Amritraj, son of former Indian Davis Cup player Vijay Amritraj, continued his form in the qualifying tournament by beating Frenchman Guillaume Rufin 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Querrey of US wins in 4 sets in US Open return

American Sam Querrey won his first-round match in four sets in his return to the U.S. Open.

The 27th-seeded Querrey beat Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in just over 3 hours Tuesday. He missed the tournament last year because of right elbow surgery.

Querrey reached the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows in his previous appearance in 2010 to match his best Grand Slam performance. He had 21 aces and 50 winners Tuesday.

Lu, ranked 64th, made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2010.

Golf club ready, Djokovic wins Wimbledon opener

Novak Djokovic brought some extra sports equipment to Wimbledon for the opening match at Centre Court on Monday: a golf club.

And once he started playing tennis, the tournament's defending champion and top-seeded man probably wished he could take a mulligan.

As something of an inside joke with a sponsor, Djokovic pulled a kid's golf club out of his racket bag and put it on the sideline when he arrived to face 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero at the grass-court Grand Slam's main stadium. Then, after a bit of a slow and nervous beginning that included an early break, Djokovic righted himself and beat Ferrero 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second round at the All England Club.

''It was a little funny thing,'' said Djokovic, whose racket maker gave him a bag that has posts to make it stand like a golf bag. ''Being creative, that's all. But fans corrected me right away. They said, `This is not a golf course.' I said, OK.'''

Querrey reaches Queen's Club semis

Sam Querrey reached his first semifinal since he went on to win the Los Angeles event in August 2010, defeating Ivan Dodig of Croatia 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at Queen's Club on Friday.

The American took the opening set after Dodig double-faulted to give Querrey a 6-5 lead. In the second set, a netted forehand at 4-3 earned Dodig the only break, and in the final set a forehand error at 3-2 left Querrey in charge.

''Tough match,'' Querrey said. ''We both served very well so it was just a matter of a couple of points here and there. I'm proud of myself after losing the second set to come back strong in the third.''

Querrey will next face sixth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia, who advanced 6-4, 2-0 when Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan retired because of groin pain.

Lu made the more positive start and led 2-0, but Cilic responded by winning 16 of the next 18 points to lead 4-2.

Cilic broke serve to lead 1-0 in the second set and won the last seven points of the match.

Lu had earlier upset t

Tipsarevic falls at Queen's Club

Third seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia is the latest upset victim at Queen's Club after losing in the third round to Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) on Friday.

Lu took the opening set on Thursday before rain forced the end of play early in the second. When the match resumed on Friday, Tipsarevic leveled the match at one set each.

Lu won the decisive set in the tiebreaker after dropping the opening three points.

With the third round not yet completed, only three of the 16 seeded players remain in the draw of the London grass court tournament, a warm-up event for Wimbledon.

Former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan.
