Monfils beats Blake in two long sets

Gael Monfils of France served 15 aces to beat John Blake of the United States 7-6 (5), 7-5 in the first round of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships on Monday.

Blake, once ranked No. 4, played his 51st match at River Oaks Country Club, where he is a crowd favorite, but Monfils won cheers for his performance in his first match in the city.

Monfils, who played in only 10 tournaments last year because of a knee injury, matched the sixth-highest total of aces in the tournament. He will next face top-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain.

Rhyne Williams of the United States, playing on a wild card, beat Guido Pella of Argentina 7-5, 7-5 in an earlier first-round match.

Monfils broke Blake in the 11th game of the second set on three straight errors by Blake and wrapped it up quickly with a love final game that included two aces. He won at the first match point on Blake's backhand error.

Monfils loses to qualifier in Qatar

Gael Monfils' comeback from injury took a hit Thursday when he lost to German qualifier Daniel Brands 6-1, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open.

The Frenchman, who ended his season early in 2012 due to knee problems, beat Philip Kohlschreiber in three sets to reach the quarterfinals. But he came out sluggish against the 153rd-ranked Brands, struggling to return the German's serve and failing to chase down many of his forehands.

After losing the first set, Monfils jumped out to 3-0 and 5-2 leads in the second, but Brands won the final five games.

Frenchman Gael Monfils ends injury-hit season

Gael Monfils has decided to end his season early, after an injury-hit campaign for the Frenchman.

Monfils, who was sidelined for several months this year with knee problems, lost in the first round of the Swedish Open on Tuesday to Patrik Rosenholm, who is ranked 436th.

On Thursday, Monfils said his knee is better but ''it's just that I'm not ready... I've got too much desire to get back to the top to accept playing awfully.''

Monfils is currently ranked 47th, but will slip to around number 70 on Monday.

He adds that ''it will be really hard to climb back up the rankings - but that's the kind of challenge I like. Even at number 90, Monfils will not be a gift to other guys in the first round.''

French Paper Reports Monfils’ Knee Injury Could Endanger Career

Gael Monfils
The French newspaper L’Equipe is reporting on its website that the right knee injury which prompted Frenchman Gael Monfils’ withdrawal from the Japan Open may endanger his career.
Monfils’ coach Patrick Chamagne told the paper: “If all turns wrong, it’s possible Gael played his last pro match. We have absolutely no idea if surgery will work or not.”
Monfils is scheduled to visit a physician in Paris to have his knee examined.
Monfils is currently ranked No. 44 in the world.

Monfils reaches Thailand quarters

Gael Monfils made back-to-back quarterfinals by ousting sixth-seeded Victor Troicki of Serbia 7-5 7-5 in the second round of the Thailand Open on Thursday.

Monfils reached the last four last week in Metz, his first tournament since May because of a right knee injury.

The Frenchman used five breaks of serve to trump the three he lost to beat Troicki a third straight time.

''Victor was a bit better than me at the beginning of the match. He tried many things,'' Monfils said. ''Then I switched a bit, I tried to slice more and be more aggressive. Then it was a fight, rallying around the court. Eventually I got through to win.''

In the quarterfinals he'll meet countryman and 2009 champion Gilles Simon, who defeated Go Soeda of Japan 6-4, 6-4.

Bernard Tomic of Australia booked his first quarterfinal since April by beating Dudi Sela of Israel 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Monfils beats Anderson to reach Thai 2nd round

Gael Monfils' fine return from injury extended to the second round of the Thailand Open after he beat South African qualifier Kevin Anderson 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 on Wednesday.

Monfils came back last week from nearly four months out with a right knee injury and reached the semifinals in Metz in his French homeland. On Wednesday, he blew a 3-1 lead in the third set, Anderson went ahead 5-4, but Monfils won the last three games to move on.

''I didn't play big tennis, just good enough to win. That's the good thing,'' Monfils said. ''I need more time to be good and confident.''

Go Soeda of Japan beat local wild card Danai Udomchoke 6-4, 7-5 for a fourth straight time, and Ivo Karlovic of Croatia defeated Marinko Matosevic of Australia 6-3 6-4.

Gael Monfils’ comeback from a knee injury won’t start at the Winston-Salem Open after all.

The 25-year-old Frenchman informed tournament director Bill Oakes that he will be unable to compete in the second annual tournament, which starts with qualifying on Saturday and the Main Draw on Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

Monfils hasn’t played competitively since May because of an injured right knee, and he was hoping to make his return to the ATP World Tour at the Winston-Salem Open. Unfortunately, he has suffered another setback in his rehabilitation.

“We are sorry to announce that Gael has withdrawn from our tournament due to reactivating an injury,” Oakes said. “He is a great player, and we wish him the best in his recovery. We were all anxious for Gael to come to Winston-Salem because he’s one of the most exciting and charismatic players on the tour. But we still have an outstanding field, and Gael’s withdrawal will give one more player the opportunity to make a nam...

France's Monfils out of Davis Cup

Gael Monfils will miss France's Davis Cup quarterfinal against the United States because of an abdominal injury on his left side.

The French tennis federation said Monday that coach Guy Forget will soon name his replacement for the 25-year-old Monfils for the contest at Monte Carlo Country Club, which starts Friday.

Monfils - who is 14th in the ATP rankings - started experiencing pain during practice Sunday and a subsequent MRI test turned up a lesion on his left oblique muscle. He will need to rest for 15 days.

The French team includes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra. The U.S. or France will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Spain and Austria.

Tomic into Kooyong final with win over Monfils

Bernard Tomic moved into the final of the Kooyong exhibition tournament with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2) win over Frenchman Gael Monfils on Thursday.

The Australian teenager beat No. 7-ranked Tomas Berdych in his opening match and then controlled the first and third sets against Monfils in his second match at the invitational tournament.

He'll next meet the winner of Friday's semifinal between American Mardy Fish and Austria's Jurgen Melzer.

No. 6-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Japan's Kei Nishikori, a late inclusion after Canada's Milos Raonic withdrew due to a stomach complaint after losing his opening match.

Tsonga, who won the Qatar Open against a strong field last week, lost both his matches at Kooyong.
