The Diamondbacks and Tom Gordon have agreed to a one year deal worth 500,000 dollars, plus incentives. Gordon, 41, was 5-4 with a 5.16 ERA in thirty-four games for the Phillies, but has a career 3.94 ERA. Gordon's command has declined over the past three seasons, and that is apparent in his numbers, as well as other specific statistics. Either way, Gordon has playoff experience and should help the Diamondbacks' bullpen.

The Author Who Cursed Tom Gordon

If I were the Phillies, I would call up Stephen King and ask him to write about some other ballplayer. Tom Gordon has been more or less "cursed" since King wrote the book, "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" (1999). Maybe if he writes about someone else, the bad luck that has been brought on Gordon will be released, sort of like an exorcist of sorts. Or, maybe Gordon, at 40 years old, is just not up to the task, physically, to pitch in the role he currently finds himself in with the Phillies as their interim closer. He does, if I remember, have a tear somewhere in his pitching arm or should that was found just last year.

Lidge out 3 to 6 weeks

We can all exhale now. Following knee surgery, Brad Lidge will be out 3 to 6 weeks, meaning he might still be ready for opening day. The Phillies should still have a back-up plan ready, just in case Lidge takes a few weeks to get his velocity back. Tom Gordon will do as a temporary replacement, but like I said yesterday, if it's any longer than a few weeks, we won't be able to count on Flash.

Not to speculate, but when Gordon is having arm problems, it's usually serious. As the Beerleaguer says "The Phillies brass will try to spin this as a routine exam, but get real." Gordon will meet with team doctor Michael Ciccotti today. Expect to hear rumors of the Phillies acquiring Mike MacDougal, Akinori Otsuka or Scott Linebrink. Even if Gordon turns out to fine, adding veteran arm with some closing experience to back up the Phillies 39 year-old closer makes a lot of sense.
