A ‘Friggin’ ‘Tangenius’ Scam

The sports columns are gushing and the blogs are orgasming and Jets fans are celebrating the 'shalumping' of the dysfunctional Arizona Cardinals yesterday, 56-35. So, what's my beef? Glad you asked. Yeah, the Jets are now 2-2 and in the hunt. And, yeah, Brett Favre threw 6 TDs.
And, yeah, the game was a real 'crowd-pleaser' a?" but, where's the fundamentally sound, smart, tough Jets team made up of low profile, interchangeable, Patriot-like players, the Tannenbaum/Mangini regime a?" 'Tangenius' a?" promise when they took over?
The team I saw, looks a hell of a lot more like some ungainly Frankenstein, composed of different body parts, roughly sewn together to form a grotesque whole. At best, they looked like an Arena League Football team, giving up almost as many points as they scored? Didn't 'Tangenius' promise a smart, tough, run-oriented, 'D' dominated, championship team, built to last a?" in the tradition of Belichick's pre-Randy Moss Patriots a?" via the draft and wise, low profile, free agent signings? What happened?
First, 'Tangenius' tried to force their 4-3 defensive personnel into a 3-4 defense, which didn't work. So, they bought a bunch of high profile defensive free agents. Prior to which, they dumped the proven Pete Kendall because he wanted a million dollars a?" which resulted in the deterioration of their 'O' line a?" which resulted in them having to pay a high profile free agent, Alan Faneca, 35 million dollars instead of the one million Pete Kendall wanted. Do the math, for Chrissake!

And, are these new high profile guys the kind of solid, interchangeable types the Patriots built their team around? Hell no! You saw what happened when Jenkins went out with a bad back against San Diego. They couldn't stop the run. What happens if Faneca goes down? Or Favre?
'Tangenius' pulled a "bait and switch" strictly for promotional purposes. They "baited" us with a proven Parcells/Belichick plan for success and "switched" to a Daniel Snyder proven plan for failure by trying to buy a championship with 140 million dollars worth of high profile free agents a?" contrary to what they promised a?" as if all they had to do was add water and pop them into a microwave.
But, okay, fine; at least they seemed to be building a smash mouth team that featured hard running, short, quick passing, no penalties, no turnovers and a punishing 'D' a?" very much like the old Patriots. But, then they go out and buy Brett Favre, the exact wrong guy for that kind of system.
So, now, in the media spotlight that a Brett Favre always brings, they've become a 'shoot-out' team that doesn't run the ball very well and can't stop anyone. Instead of balance, they now live and die on Brett Favre's arm a?? who, by the way, probably won't even be around next season. So, how exactly is 'Tangenius' building a smart, tough Patriot-like team of low profile, interchangeable parts, for the future?
Yeah, they won yesterday and yeah, they'll probably win some more games and yeah I love Brett Favre a?" who doesn't? But what's 'Tangenius' building for the future? What happened to the team they promised? Who the hell are these guys, anyway? I'm telling you, man; it's A Friggin' 'Tangenius' scam!

Kendall Fined $5000 for His Back and Forth w/ Giants LB Pierce

The wallet of guard Pete Kendall is a little lighter today, as the Skins OL was fined $5000 for his actions during a push and shove with Giants LB Antonio Pierce during the opener back on September 4th. Pierce didn't escape a $5000 fine as well for the incident. Kendall was fined for yanking Pierce's helmet off. Pierce was fined for unnecessary roughness. The amazing thing was no penalties were called on the play.

Mangini on the Hot Seat

Eric Mangini took over as head coach and in his first year the Jets made the playoffs. He did this with players that Herman Edwards and Terry Bradway left him.. Mangini and GM Mike Tannebaum have been building this team during the last three years and now we can say that they are there players not Edwards or Bradways.
Mangini who is younger then his starting QB is obviously married to the 3-4 defense that he learned under Bill Belicheck. The off season moves (free agency & draft) tell us that he is still very much in love with the 3-4. Now his newly acquired future hall of fame QB is telling him to simplify things as he doesn't want to think, he wants to react.
Last week I posted an article regarding Chemistry (I & II) that mentioned these scenarios as I could see them happening. Mangini and Tannebaum are still very raw and wet behind the ears. They are trying to be coaches, management, and friends all at the same time. Perfect examples are Laveranues Coles and Chris Baker. Coles and Baker wanted longer term commitments with the Jets.
Coles got his wish and before camp opened he signed a longer term contract then he currently had (Baker is still waiting as he was promised one). All we heard from Tannebaum and Mangini is that Coles was a great guy who they wanted to be here for the long haul. So the Jets brass sign Coles to a longer deal knowing he is past his prime, fighting foot plus other injuries that come from wear and tear, and Jerrico Cotchery is now the number one WR and is much younger then Coles.
Coles leveraged his opportunity to get a longer deal because he knew what happened last year with Pete Kendall and Pennington would beat out Clemmons. The deal makes sense if the intention was to keep Chad Pennington under center as Pennington and Coles have built great chemistry while being close friends. This is where communications can hurt chemistry.

Often times we hear the phrase "Players play and coaches coach". This is why you need to keep it to the business and not get emotionally involved with personal relationships in the business world. Mangini and Tannebaum could never experience this before as there tenure included being a ball boy or taping practices of there opponents.
Jets owner Woody Johnson knows this year is a measuring stick for his team. After three seasons and 2 years of off season maneuvers the results of this season will be a tell all story if Mangini and Tannebaum will stay with the Jets. Not many NFL brass would consider a 38 year old rat (spygate) with hardly any coordinator and or head coaching success. Is this a dictatorship or an open door relationship where players can approach you?
Part of communication is listening. When your future hall of fame QB tells you that we need to use the guys to the best of there abilities, listen to him. Mangini has tried to listen to his players like having a less brutal camp this year versus years past and even giving his players unexpected days off. But what Mangini needs to do is be more vocal and get in his players faces like Bill Parcells or Jon Gruden.
In a brutal sport that is compared to fighting in a war my question to you is, "Would you want a friend or a leader fighting along side of you when you are at war?" How about less gum chewing on the sidelines and more verbal in your face communications (to both the players and assistant coaches) on how to win the war. In my opinion Mangini relies on his staff too much as he doesn't have the experience or knowledge that a NFL head coach needs to have.
Maybe that's why he chews gum all game and shows no emotion because he has no clue on what is going on. Just like the end of the Browns game when he decided for a FG instead of the win during a pre-season game. Time is vital right now with two weeks to go before the season starts.
To be succesful Mangini needs to play with the hand he was delt, meaning like his QB said, "We need to simplify things and use the guys to the best of there abilities so everyone is on the same page and reacting not thinking" Will Mangini listen? Or will he play his last poker game in the NFL?

Baker Hurt?!?! Will Jets Forfeit Season?

The better question may be will anyone even notice he's out? New York Jets alleged tight end Chris Baker apparently hurt his back and the Jets were forced to put him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Speculation arose that it was to punish Baker for a being a schnook and having severe delusions of granduer. Maybe so but I have to agree with Bob Bullock of the Jetsream blog over on Newark Star Ledger when he says this sounds like Pete Kendall Episode II: Attack of the Moans. With the uber prospect Dustin Keller now in the fold alongside veteran Bubba Franks how much do Jets really need the underwhelming, underperforming Baker? He's never lit it up and then as soon as he has a passable season in an awful year where the Jets anemic offense had no choice but to dump passes off to Baker as the line collapsed around the quarterback, he wants a raise! Please Mr. Tannenbaum, deal this guy for a 5th round pick and let's start the Dustin Keller era.
Another preseason forecast and this one sounds pretty good as the Jets get tabbed as a team on the rise thanks to their off-season additions. I don't believe the Jets always throw money at the probl;em after a bad season but this time I think they brought in quality personnel. Take a look at how Dave Hutchinson see's the AFC taking shape.

Changing Of The Guard

Offensive line has been a sore spot for the Jets the past couple of years. In the last decade or so the Jets have found success drafting mid round lineman like Jason Fabini, Ryan Young, and Kareem McKenzie, but lately the replenishing of the line has placed the Jets in a much higher tax bracket. First rounders Brick Ferguson and Nick Mangold in 2006 and this offseason super guard Alan Faneca.
The Faneca signing will be the most important free agent signing in the league as history suggests it is this position that translates into W's and immediate and substantial dividends in the ground game rankings. Faneca will also be much more than a single position upgrade over uber whiner Pete Kendall. He'll be the mentor and on field coach that will continue to make Ferguson and Mangold two of the leagues best young players on the offensive line.
While the line has been solidified since the start of free agency it appears that the Jets front office needed some impact additions as well. Who knew? The biggest news was the hiring of an aisstant general manager. It doesn't appear that Scott Cohen — the man Mike Tannenbaum tapped — has any prior connections to Tannenbaum or the organization but at the very least he comes from a solid front office and winning franchise so that can't hurt.

Memo to Mangini/Tannenbaum..... PAY COLES ALREADY!!!

Give him whatever he wants so this doesn't turn out to be a problem. If his production declines in the next few years simply trade him or restructure his deal. You don't want to insult a huge locker room influence in the beginning of the year. This will just piss off all the players that look up to Coles. The same thing happened last year when Pete Kendall was crying about his money and look how great last season turned out, 4 wins. Mangini has to realize that sometimes the players have the upper hand and that the Jets are not the Patriots.

Breakdown of the NYJ's Off-Season Moves

Trades

LB – Jonathan Vilma to Saints – This is the worst move by the Jets since drafting Kyle Brady over Warren Sapp. They are trading away one of the best Linebackers in the game for a 4th round pick and a possible 3rd and 4th next year. Why trade this young, fast and extremely talented LB? He didn't fit the system? When you have a player as talented as Vilma you make the system fit him. Imagine having David Harris and Vilma playing together for the next ten years. Mark my words, unless NY picks up a top rate superstar LB this trade will haunt the Jets in the years to come

DT – Kris Jenkins from Panthers – Great job by Tannenbaum picking up one of the best defensive tackles in the game. Finally the Jets are picking up players that "fit the system."

Monk, Green to be Enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame

Redskins writer Greg Trippiedi writes "Kendall is still decent in getting to the second level in run blocking, and is hardly a total sieve there. However, the combination of him and Rabach in the middle is failing the Redskins. They likely have one more year to get it worked out."

Hog Wire: Youth Movement; Cooley Extension; More

The Washington Redskins finished the 2007 preseason with a 2-2 record. In their preseason finale, the Redskins lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-14 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. In his limited action, which tested the condition of his bruised knee, Jason Campbell led the first-team offense to a touchdown on his only drive of the game. He exited the game after completing 5-of-5 passes for 54 yards, ending with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Antwaan Randle El.

The final game was the last chance for roster hopefuls to impress the coaches as roster cuts loomed, therefore both teams "sat" their projected starters.

Youth Movement?

The Redskins appear to be fielding a younger team in 2007 than last year, despite the fact that they signed veterans MLB London Fletcher, LB Randall Godfrey, and G Pete Kendall. Many of the older veterans were not re-signed (Troy Vincent, David Patten, Warrick Holdman, Jeff Posey, and John Hall), partly because of their age and partly because of the growth of the younger players on the roster, such as Reed Doughty and Rocky McIntosh, among others. Players new to the Redskins and the NFL include two draft picks, Safety LaRon Landry (the 6th pick overall) and Linebacker H.B. Blades (sixth round), and 3 undrafted rookies (T Stephon Heyer, TE Cody Boyd, and RB Marcus Mason). The Redskins also signed 3 first-year players (DE Lorenzo Alexander, DE Chris Wilson, and CB Leigh Torrence) that made the final rosters...

Fifth Quarter: Jacksonville Jaguars

Surrounded by trade rumors, Mark Brunell played in Jacksonville for the first time since joining the Redskins, and on Thursday night he made his case for taking a spot on the final roster. The Jaguars struggled early against the Redskins, but a consistent passing attack and a solid defense by the Jags in the second half led to a blowout-like score of 31–14. The good news for Skins fans is that the first and second string players established a lead of 14–3 near the end of the first half, when the 3rd string defenders began to see the field. Overall, the Redskins looked good, and now fans have only a week and a half to wait for the start of the season.

Here are the Fifth Quarter rankings, which are based on a scale of 1 to 5 Quarters:
