No direct US Open entry for Oudin

Three years after she reached the US Open quarterfinals, American Melanie Oudin won't earn direct entry into the tournament because her ranking has fallen to 121st in the world.

The US Tennis Association announced Thursday the top 102 women who automatically get into the Open. Two others, Agnes Szavay and Timea Bacsinszky, used protected rankings to make it.

Oudin can still get in through one of the eight wild-card spots awarded by the USTA.

Sixteen additional players will make it through qualifying.

Oudin was the darling of the 2009 Open as a 17-year-old, upsetting Maria Sharapova during her run. She has been ranked as high as 31st in her career but has struggled to maintain that form.

Paszek gets spot on Austria's Olympic tennis team

Tamira Paszek has been granted a place on Austria's Olympic tennis team following a successful appeal of her eligibility.

Paszek was originally ruled ineligible by the International Tennis Federation's Olympic committee, which said she had not sufficiently made herself available for Fed Cup events.

In an appeal, Tennis Austria provided additional documentation regarding Paszek's availability, the ITF said Friday.

The No. 37-ranked Paszek, who will compete in the Olympics for the first time, replaces Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in the 64-player field. Bacsinsky decided not to compete at the Games.

Paszek reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this week before losing to Victoria Azarenka.

Blustery winds hit Indian Wells Open

Keep the ball in the court. It sounds like the simplest approach possible to the game of tennis. But when the wind is swirling and gusting as it has been this week at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden there's nothing simple about it.

Caroline Wozniacki, who won last year's BNP Paribas Open, said when she practiced Tuesday evening ''it was like a hurricane, it was so windy and cold.'' The weather hadn't changed much Wednesday, when the 12-day, $11 million event got under way with 16 women's singles matches and winds gusting up to 20 mph.

Wozniacki, No. 4 in the world, didn't have to play one of those matches. She was one of the 32 seeded players who got first-round byes. So she could sit and watch, and empathize with those who did.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova said in those conditions ''it's not really about the tennis,'' and Wozniacki said the only viable strategy is to ''move your feet and play in the middle of the court - depending
