ITF Let Golden Star Serena Off Hook

by Greg CouchFiled under: WTAThe International Tennis Federation has completed its two-month "investigation'' into Serena Williams' f-bomb-laced, threatening tirade toward a line judge on worldwide TV at the U.S. Open. Her "punishment'' should come Monday or Tuesday.I would give just about anything to see the notes from this "investigation.'' The quote-marks show that this was just a theoretical thing, anyway. As in, it took two months to find "...

ITF president says ban unlikely for Serena

The president of the International Tennis Federation thinks Serena Williams will receive a hefty monetary fine but will not be suspended for the Australian Open for her U.S. Open tirade.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Saturday, Francesco Ricci Bitti said a monetary fine would "make much more sense."

Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock is due to hand his recommendation to the Grand Slam committee, which will likely announce the sanction Monday or Tuesday.

A ruling on Serena Williams' U.S. Open tirade is expected in the next two weeks.

United States Tennis Association president Lucy Garvin told The Associated Press on Friday that Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock has completed his investigation and that a ruling is imminent.

Why hasn't the ITF made a decision about Serena's suspension?

It's been 51 days since Serena Williams threatened an official at the U.S. Open, yet there's still no word from the International Tennis Federation as to whether the 11-time Grand Slam champion will be suspended from any tournaments as a result of the tirade. The WTA's chief executive said three weeks ago that the investigation was "ongoing" and that a decision was expected by the end of the year. Our question: What's taking so long? This isn't the Warren Commiss...

Serena Williams is No. 1, and Deserves It

by Greg CouchFiled under: WTA, WTA RankingsShe threatened a player, didn't try most of the year, famously threatened a line judge and was thrown out of a match. The other thing Serena Williams did in 2009 was this:She won the year-end No. 1 ranking. It became official Wednesday in Doha, Qatar, at the WTA Championships when Dinara Safina, the current No. 1 Williams was trying to overcome, withdrew from the tournament with a bad back. It guaranteed that Williams would finish the year No. 1 f...

Video: Serena Williams Calls Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez a Dirty, Lowdown Cheater

Unlike her sister Venus, Serena Williams was able to defeat her 3rd round French Open opponent, but not without controversy, as outlined in the above video. A rough summary of the issue: Serena hit a ball directly at opponent Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez - mean, maybe, but legal. Said shot struck Martinez Sanchez in the arm, which, according to the rules of tennis, means Martinez Sanchez should’ve lost the point.
