Arizona Cardinals 2013 Salary Cap: The Struggle

One of the hardest things to discern when looking forward for a team that, as newly minted GM Steve Keim put it, re-tooling, is understanding what the roster and cap numbers look like going forward.
Well fear not loyal #Birdgang, as I am here to do my best with what I can to figure out a way for the Cardinals to get back under the salary cap.
Yes, you heard right the 2013 Arizona Cardinals as constructed below are already $723K over the cap. In other words, it’s time to get creative and get rid of some… dead weight.
As always you can reach me on Twitter @SethCoxFB with questions regarding anything Cardinals.
Let’s break this down: I will give you the players name, how long their contract runs through in parentheses, after that I will break down what I would like to see worked out at the position.
The contract numbers I am using are courtesy of Rotoworld.com and reflect only the base salaries, any bonuses I am counting as being paid still because they are very convoluted to figure ...

Arizona Cardinals: Week 16 NFL Power Rankings (#27)

Last week: 29 (+2)
Record: 5-9
Net points per drive: -0.31 (23rd)
DVOA: -14.7% (26th)
Weighted DVOA: -21.6% (27th)
The Cardinals ended a 9 game losing streak last week and avoided the 4-0 to 4-12 collapse, but they did it almost purely on returns, returning two interceptions for touchdowns and returning a muffed punt to the Detroit 5, for an easy score. Ryan Lindley still didn’t look like he even belonged in the league, let alone starting, and with games against Chicago and San Francisco left on the schedule, they probably won’t win another game.
Studs
LT Nate Potter: Did not allow a pressure on 25 pass block snaps, run blocked for -3 yards on 1 attempt
CB Greg Toler: Did not allow a catch on 6 attempts, 1 interception, 3 pass deflections, 2 solo tackles, 1 stop
RE Calais Campbell: 1 sack and 2 quarterback hurries on 41 pass rush snaps, 1 batted pass, 7 solo tackles, 7 stops
K Jay Feely: 7 kickoffs, 5 touchbacks, 65.9 yards per kickoff, 20.4 opponent’s average starting distance, 1/1...

This Date in Pirates History: August 17

There have been four former Pittsburgh Pirates players born on this date, including one that played just one inning of one game. In his Jolly Roger Rewind, John Fredland covers a doubleheader against the Reds from the 1990 season. Before we get to the former players, one current player has a birthday. Relief pitcher Chad Qualls turns 34 today. He came to the Pirates from the Yankees at the trading deadline two weeks ago, in exchange for Casey McGehee. Chad is in his ninth year in the majors, with his seventh different team. He has a 40-35 3.89 record, with 51 saves in 587 appearances.
Alex Cole (1965) Outfielder for the 1992 Pirates. He was a second round draft pick of the Cardinals in 1985, making it to the big leagues five years later with the Indians. Cole had a big first season with Cleveland after coming up in late July. He hit .300 with 40 stolen bases in just 63 games. He was a regular in center field the next year and hit .295 in 122 games, but the stolen bases really went down, swiping 27 bags while

Wells, King sidelined after failed physicals

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Cardinals fans received a mild surprise when training camp began at Northern Arizona University on Tuesday. Running back Beanie Wells (knee) joined tight end Jeff King (quadriceps) on the active physically unable to perform (PUP) list after failing the team physical. Like King, Wells designation will prevent him from practicing until that designation is lifted, but coach Ken Whisenhunt told reporters it was expected with Wells.

We were going to be conservative in our approach with him anyway, Whisenhunt said.

Wells can come off the list at any point during camp but had to be placed on active PUP before camp began, per league rules. He still counts against the training camp roster.

Wells refused to put a timeline on his return when he spoke to reporters on Wednesday.

It just takes time, said Wells, who had surgery in the offseason which he characterizes continues to characterize as arthroscopic despite the extended recovery time. I dont want to go out there and put wear and tear on it i

Cardinals to use tight ends more in 2012

The Cardinals have never been ones to focus on the tight end in their offense, but times are changing. The tight end has become a focal point of offenses all across the league and the Cardinals no longer have quite the outside wide receiver talent that they had in years past when they had Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin in their primes. They used a 3rd round pick on a tight end, Rob Housler, in 2011 and he played sparingly as a rookie behind two veterans Todd Heap and Jeff King, but according to the Arizona Republic, the Cardinals will be focusing more on the tight end in their offense in 2012.
They also said that Housler would likely open the season as the 1st string tight end, but that they would use a lot of two-tight end sets with either one of the two veterans, Todd Heap and Jeff King. Housler rarely came off the field in OTAs and minicamp and even Larry Fitzgerald says that the “tight ends are probably their strongest position on the field.”
Even if that’s not true, Housler...

Cardinals notebook: Whiz stressing momentum

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After winning seven of their last nine games in 2011 to finish 8-8, the Cardinals -- despite missing the playoffs -- felt good about the momentum they had built. They felt even better after making a few key additions in free agency and the draft and now, after a productive stretch of offseason workouts, are even more excited about the momentum in place ahead training camp.

With minicamp wrapping up Thursday morning, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt left his players with a message to keep in mind until reporting to Flagstaff on July 24.

"I said, 'Let's don't go backwards,'" Whisenhunt said. "We've made progress. I don't know how much progress we've made, and we've still got a ways to go, but the important thing now is that we dont take a step backwards."

Cards still shopping, cautiously, for free agents

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt told media members in January he didnt expect the team to be a major player in the free-agent market. Then the Indianapolis Colts released a future Hall of Fame quarterback and Arizona joined a handful of wannabe high-rollers.

It certainly changed our thinking, general manager Rod Graves said Friday. We felt we had a very strong opportunity to make something happen that would be special for our football team and special for our fans.

Peyton Manning didnt end up in Arizona, but the anticipation of his potential arrival may have blinded the fan base to Whisenhunts caution flag, creating unrealistic expectations for this offseason.

Our interest level is still active with respect to free agents and that level will be maintained right up to the end of training camp, Graves said. One thing you can be certain of is we will have a stronger roster for 2012 than we ended up with last season, and that includes the offensive line.

The Cards are about 1.6 million below the salary cap,

Arizona Cardinals 16.4 Million Dollars Under The Cap

As many of you know, our Cardinals are over the cap by 16.4 Million Dollars. They must get back underneath the cap by Tuesday or else. The following people are players that the Cardinals should release or restructure, in order to get under the cap, and possibly make room for Peyton Manning. for The Purpose of my math I will be “releasing” each player and adding their money to the Cap Total.

1) Levi Brown: It was my hope that a deal could get done between Levi and the Cardinals brass, but both sides were apparently far apart. Levi feels like his play during the latter half of the season is enough to keep him from taking any sort drastic pay cut. Luckily for us, there are options in Free Agency that are upgrades from Levi, albeit they won’t be major game changers.
Cap Hit: $18,225,000
Cap Total: 2,225,000
2) Stewart Bradley: I was at first debating whether or not he should be released or take a pay cut… As of now, I am leaning towards the pay cut. He has potential, but shouldn’t have been paid the

Offseason Odyssey: Arizona Cardinals

Throughout the 2012 offseason, we will be taking a look at each NFL team from a keeper/dynasty perspective. Keeper leagues are very unique, with widely varying formats, but the following are observations based on reasonable draft positions in 2011. Further discussion of different keeper/dynasty decisions and trades is welcome in the comments below. We start by taking a look at the Offseason Odyssey of the Arizona Cardinals…
Finish: 8-8 (2nd NFC West)
2012 Draft Order: 13th Overall Pick
2011 Leaders: QB- Kevin Kolb- 1955 pass yds, 9/8 td/int RB- Beanie Wells- 1047 rush yds, 10 td WR- Larry Fitzgerald- 80 rec, 1411 rec yds, 8 td TE- Jeff King- 27 rec, 271 rec yds, 3 td
On the Fence? KEEP him: Beanie Wells- Personally, I tended to undervalue Wells a bit during the course of the 2011 season. Non-existent receiving skills (27 career catches) and a brittle reputation made me avoid Beanie like the mangy cat that lives under my porch. Despite the reputation, Wells actually played in ...

Cardinals midseason report card: Half bad

TEMPE, Ariz. Once in a great while, a plan comes together.

Were not talking about this Sundays opponents at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia: the Arizona Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles. Both clubs have strayed far from the preseason plan.

But with the season at its midpoint, the Eagles are the perfect news peg for our midseason report card. It was, after all, that blockbuster Kevin Kolb for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie trade that created such lofty expectations for both teams.

It hasnt worked out thus far, but theres still half a season to get those grades turned around.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The good: The unit was starting to develop an identity as a running team early in the season, putting running back Beanie Wells among the league leaders in average yards per game. Poor efforts at Minnesota (mostly due to a large early deficit) and against St. Louis have dropped the team back into the leagues bottom quarter in rushing yards per game, but there is still hope in this area.

The bad: Pass protec

Harbaugh confused about taunting penalties

There were two penalties in Baltimore's 30-27 come-from-behind victory over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday afternoon. They were in the form of taunting calls.
Early in the game, safety Bernard Pollard finished off a hit on Arizona tight end Jeff King. Pollard stood over King to say something after the play. He was flagged for taunting. According to reports, Pollard was unhappy about the flag.
In the fourth quarter, Ray Rice gained seven yards on a first down and celebrated a little bit. Rice was flagged for taunting the defense.
At his press conference Monday afternoon, coach John Harbaugh was confused as to why each player was flagged for taunting their opponent, according to reports.
It'll be interesting to see the explanation Harbaugh gets for the penalties.

Arizona Cardinals (1-3) vs. Minnesota Vikings (0-4)

The Arizona Cardinals have lost three games in a row by a combined 8 points. The Vikings have lost all four of their games this year by an average of 4.8 points per game. This sets up to be a close game and here is the way the matchups look:
When the Cardinals have the ball: The Cardinals are going to likely come out passing, especially if Vikings’ CB Antoine Winfield doesn’t play (neck injury). Larry Fitzgerald could be in for a HUGE game this Sunday, if the Cardinals do a good job of blocking for Kevin Kolb. That means keeping Jared Allen and his 6.5 sacks away from Kolb and that is easier said than done. Earl Doucet and the TEs Todd Heap and Jeff King are also likely going to get there fair share of looks in this game. The Vikings are giving up 286.3 yards passing per game which sets up well for Kolb and his buddies. Beanie Wells is going to give the Cardinals’ offense balance as he has been electric this year, when healthy. The Vikings are only allowing 76.3 yards rushi...

Emergency Bye Week Fillers…That Are Available

Well we’ve finally come to the first bye week of the season, losing Cleveland, Dallas, St. Louis, Miami, Baltimore and Washington. Unless you’re playing in an especially shallow league, chances are you’re sitting in a position where you’ve got to plug a hole and the waiver wire options are limited. I figured, since most of my best lottery ticket players are owned now, why not cover some of the most available players who make good plugs at each position this week. This post will cover only players who are less than 15% owned in leagues. Check it out.
Before we begin, I hope you all are sitting on Issac Redman right now. As the week progresses it looks more and more like Redman will get the nod, Moore will be out, and Mendenhall will be used sparingly. I know Joe Schmoe is telling you about Tennessee’s stout run defense, and that’s well warranted, but he’s got a real chance to break out in this game. Fact of the matter is, at 6’0″ and 230lbs with burst, Redman will be a force for any defense
