Richard Childress Racing Coca-Cola 600 Race Preview

Richard Childress Racing at Charlotte: In 131 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Richard Childress Racing teams have earned six points-paying victories. Four wins were claimed by Dale Earnhardt, while Jeff Burton added to that total with a win in the October 2008 race and, most recently, Kevin Harvick took home the trophy in one of NASCAR’s marquee events – the Coca-Cola 600 – in May 2011. Harvick also recorded an impressive win in the 2007 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race to go along with Earnhardt’s three victories in the annual all-star showcase, giving RCR 10 total Sprint Cup Series checkered flags at CMS. Additionally, RCR boasts 20 top-five and 42 top-10 finishes at the 1.5-mile track with seven different drivers including Clint Bowyer, Burton, Earnhardt, Harvick, Ricky Rudd and Mike Skinner. Childress, a former driver on NASCAR’s senior circuit, contributed two of those top-10 finishes from 1978-1979. The Welcome, N.C.-based organization has led a combine...

Inside the Garage: Burton’s Cup Future Rests Soley on his Performance

As a new generation of drivers enters the Sprint Cup Series, the veterans are finding it tougher and tougher to remain competitive. Other than a few breakout weekends, Jeff Burton hasn’t been much of a threat over the past few seasons. Every year, Burton gets the pre-season hype as a potential breakout driver for the upcoming season. The expectations are high until about Phoenix and then they die down since Burton can no longer remain consistent during each race. A new crop of drivers has begun to enter the RCR stable and it’s just a matter of time that the new talent takes over the veteran’s rides.
To still have a ride with a top-tier Cup team is something that indicates RCR still has hope that Burton can once again be competing for wins each weekend. Burton still has the talent, but he needs to show us that. By running up front and winning races, he’ll once again emerge as a threat. If he doesn’t do that soon, he may be run over by the new generation of NASCAR drivers.

3 Bold Predictions for the Cup Series in 2013

With the new Gen 6 car in 2013, anything can happen on the race track. We could see things happen that we haven’t seen happen in years. We may also see new and never before seen things occur. That’s what makes predicting the upcoming season so fun. Anything could happen, right? So why not throw out the possibility of my three bold predictions coming true? These three bold predictions for this year could create some interesting racing if they were to come true. Anything and everything will occur this season and maybe even the guesses I take now will come true by November. Bold Prediction 1: Jeff Burton makes the Chase After disappointing year after disappointing year, Jeff Burton seems ready to go all out this season and potentially compete for the championship. The new car has been working in Burton’s favor and he is one of the most optimistic drivers regarding the Gen 6 car. Being optimistic has its advantages and Burton’s advantage may be getting into the Chase. I believe Burton w...

Burton: Gen 6 needs to bring back fun

Richard Childress Racing's Jeff Burton knows that there is one thing that, in the end, will be more important than anything else when it comes to NASCAR's new Generation 6 car -- how it performs on the racetrack.

Burton, one of the thought-provoking veterans in the Sprint Cup Series, seems pleased with the car. He applauds that the new model -- as he says he heard in a phrase Monday -- will "put the stock back in stock-car racing."

In the end, though, when the sheer excitement of watching the Gen 6 develop, of seeing something one truly recognizes on the track and simply seeing something new wears off -- there will be one thing fans are looking for the most -- performance.

First, Burton says he is genuinely excited to bring fans a race with cars on the track that looks like the ones they drove to it.

"I think that's good for the manufacturers," he said. "We've got V8, fuel-injected rear-wheel drive race cars in the showroom; V8, fuel-injection, rear-wheel drives on

Jeff Burton eager for Gen-6 era

Over the last seven years, it's been difficult to ascertain whether certain drivers were in a slump or simply didn't acclimate to the Car of Tomorrow.

Yes, numbers tell part of the tale:

- Dale Earnhardt Jr. scored just two of his 19 career wins during the COT era. Of course, throughout that time Junior also switched companies and worked with five different crew chiefs.

- Jeff Gordon won three of the first 16 races in the COT, but only six additional races during the evolution of that car model after the roll-out year in 2007.

- Two of Jeff Burton's 21 career Cup wins were won behind the wheel of the COT -- but then again, he's only earned four victories since moving to Richard Childress Racing in 2005.

Still, for veteran drivers that never found their groove in the Car of Tomorrow, could NASCAR's new Generation 6 ride provide a new lease on a stagnant phase in their careers by offering a better feel?

"I think the biggest thing that's going to help me is having a group of pe

Jeff Burton Ford EcoBoost 400 Race Recap

Jeff Burton and the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet team finished off the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season with a 19th-place effort in the season-finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Starting from the 33rd position, the South Boston, Va., native climbed into the top 25 early in the 400-mile event while battling a loose-handling condition on his Chevrolet.
Despite different chassis adjustments on multiple four-tire pit stops by the Caterpillar pit crew throughout the 267-lap affair, the 21-time Sprint Cup Series race winner wrestled with the loose-handling machine for a majority of the event. During a caution-flag period on lap 158, crew chief Shane Wilson decided to play pit strategy which allowed Burton to only pit once for the remainder of the event compared to other competitors who needed to pit multiple times.
The pit strategy paid off as the event concluded under green-flag conditions. The fortunate turn of events gave Burton the opportunity to gain three positions over th...

Jeff Burton on Talladega: Race Review Online exclusive

Jeff Burton’s opinion is one of the most respected in the NASCAR garage; when he speaks, others listen.
I had the opportunity to interview the veteran RCR driver at Richmond in September, and one of the questions I asked him was about the nature of restrictor plate racing at Talladega Superspeedway.
Burton supports restrictor plate racing as a necessary safety measure, although he made it clear he has mixed feelings.
“No one’s ever going to be completely happy with anything. Plate racing is fun to do, but it’s exceptionally frustrating because you are in that big pack and one person makes a mistake, they take a lot of people with them. The only way to fix that is to separate the pack, and then the fans hate it.
“I personally thought the bump drafting rules was a combination of all those things. It separated the pack a little bit because you like six two-car packs running together, and behind them four or five two-car packs running together, and behind them a few more. So that kind o...

Jeff Burton never worried about job at RCR

Jeff Burton has steadfastly believed he would drive the No. 31 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing in 2013. The veteran driver recently told reporters that he never worried about being replaced by Kurt Busch or any other driver for next season.
“I never worried about being replaced,” Burton said Tuesday during a Charlotte Motor Speedway media day at the RCR shop. “I never woke up in the morning saying, ‘Damn, I might not drive the 31 car next year.’
Those comments should come as little surprise to anyone who has followed Burton’s career in NASCAR.
Burton has struggled the last two seasons. He is currently 19th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings after finishing 20th last season. The last time Burton visited victory lane in the series was the fall race at Charlotte in 2008.
When asked recently Richard Childress, the RCR team owner, only commented that Burton was signed for the 2013 season.
As a whole RCR has struggled this year. After winning four races last season betwe...

Pit Road Incident Relegates Jeff Burton to 21st-Place Finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway

An early pit road incident, untimely cautions and long green-flag runs relegated Jeff Burton and the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet team to a 21st-place finish in the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Burton started the 301-lap affair from the 25th position and quickly moved into the top 20 by lap 17.
On the first round of green-flag pit stops on lap 65, the No. 31 Chevrolet and another competitor mad contact while exiting the pit box, causing a tire rub on the Caterpillar machine. The minor damage never became a factor with on-track performance, but the Richard Childress Racing driver lost valuable track position and dropped one lap down to the leader due to the delay on pit road.
After the first caution-flag period of the day, Burton was determined to battle his way into the "lucky dog" position and get back on the lead lap. A 98-lap green-flag run, however, gave the leader ample time to lap several cars ahead of the 21-time NASCAR Sprint Cup...

Jeff Burton Avoids Trouble, Brings Home Runner-Up Finish in Coke Zero 400 at Daytona

Jeff Burton made three amazing saves, avoided multiple accidents, and led the No. 31 Wheaties Chevrolet team to a second-place finish in the Coke Zero 400 powered by Coca-Cola at Daytona International Speedway.
The South Boston, Va. native qualified the Richard Childress Racing machine in the 21st position and decided early to use a conservative strategy during the race, falling back to the tail end of the 43-car field with teammates Kevin Harvick and Paul Menard to prevent engine temperatures from rising.
After running mid pack for a majority of the 160-lap event, the 21-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner dodged his first bullet of the night on lap 92 when multiple cars collided in front of the 45-year-old driver, sending the No. 47 car spinning, barely missing Burton's orange and black machine and bringing out the caution flag.
Burton restarted in the 18th position after his final pit stop of the day with 30 laps to go and began his climb up the leaderboard, worki...

Jeff Burton Quaker State 400 Race Recap

Jeff Burton and the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet team posted a 24th-place finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kentucky Speedway. The 21-time Sprint Cup Series race winner started the 267-lap event in the 29th position and raced his way into the 22nd position in the early stages of the race despite battling a tight-handling Chevrolet. A long green-flag run out the field and Burton fell one lap down to the leader.
Unable to secure the “Lucky Dog” award after caution-flag periods on laps 126 and 150, crew chief Drew Blickensderfer decided to use a different pit strategy than other teams in the field by working to make it to the end of the race by utilizing one final pit stop instead of two as all other teams were planning. The No. 31 team engineers calculated the ECR engines were getting superior fuel mileage in comparison to the competition and Blickensderfer’s plan was coming together as Burton brought the No. 31 machine to pit road for routine four-tire service on lap 210...
