NFL News and Fantasy Football Views - Week 4

Week 3 of the fantasy football season came and went with many newsworthy tidbits, but the biggest thing that I can't get out of my head is the fact that Week 4 represents 25% of the season already having almost been played. Hopefully everyone is doing great right now with their rosters, but if you aren't don't worry! There is still plenty of time to right this ship, so utilize the Bruno Boys website to your utmost ability! This week we talk about Brian Westbrook's ankle injury, Ronnie Brown's 5 TD game performance, Julius Jones and his great start to the season, as well as Frank Gore possibly being one of the best bargains in fantasy football so far this year!

So nestle snugly into your computer chair, close the doors, and turn off the phones! It is time once again for another edition of the RED HOT Newz and Fantasy Football Viewz from two whacky, insane, Detroit Lions fans, Bruno Boys Larry and Bruno Boys Ziza!
-------------------------

Red Hot NFL Newz: Brian Westbrook left Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to injury and he looked like he was in severe pain. What should fantasy footballers be thinking right now?

Bruno Boys Ziza Viewz: This news is going to be a cause of concern and many sleepless hours for a lot of fantasy football owners this week...

It Was a Shootout, but 'Boys Down Birds

Last night the Philadelphia Eagles went into Texas stadium for the last time. They've played many amazing games in the stadium over the past 30 years or so, but none quite this one. In the end, it was a 41-37 loss, to their most bitter rivals, the Dallas Cowboys but in truth it was a game to build on.

In probably the most memorable Monday Night Football game in some time, the Eagles and Cowboys changed leads on 7 different occasions. Their were hard hits, fumbles in the endzone, boneheaded plays, beautiful deep passes, lots of yardage and every player left it all on the field. Led by Tony Romo, the Cowboys immediately made their mark with their first possession. Trailing 3-0 after the Eagles opened with a field goal on their drive, the Cowboys countered with a 72 yard bomb in which Sean Considine and Sheldon Brown dropped coverage on Terrell Owens.

After David Akers second field goal, the Eagles kicked the ball to Felix Jones who promptly ran it back 98 yards for another Dallas TD and 14-6 lead. It was apparent that this was going to be high scoring affair and that the Birds were in trouble. But Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook drove the Eagles down the field. On a pass from McNabb towards the end zone, Greg Lewis did a remarkable job of duping the ref's into thinking he was being held, when it was in fact Lewis that was doing the holding. This led to a McNabb to Westbrook 6 yard TD Pass to bring the Eagle to within 14-13.

The next series started with the Cowboys deep in their own territory and Romo made a classic miscue of fumbling the snap in the end zone which was recovered by Chris Gocong for an Eagles TD.

Romo came back on the ensuing series however and reconnected with T.O. for another TD, this one after a long drive got them to the Eagles 4 yard line.

And then the game started getting really weird. On, a play that will be remembered for the rest of his career, DeSean Jackson, the Eagles rookie sensation took in a beautiful over the shoulder pass from McNabb and simply dropped the ball at the 1 yard line as he ran into the end zone with an apparent TD. Dallas Challenged and fortunately for the Eagles, they got the ball back at the 1 where Westbrook punched it in for a 30- 21 lead. At the half, the score was Eagles 30- 24 and the commentators on ESPN were already praising it as one of the best ever.

The second half was a much different place, with both offenses utilizing the run more often and Marion Barber taking control of the pace. However, it was not until a McNabb to Westbrook hand off flub fell into the hands of Dallas, who promptly took their first turnover downfield for a TD and 41-37 lead.

McNabb and the Eagles were shut down by the Cowboys to end the game. Dallas won the game, but it is my thought that Eagles put the rest of the league on notice. McNabb is healthy, he's got a brand new, albeit immature weapon in Jackson, and of course Westbrook. Putting this game in perspective, The Eagles have a lot to build on. They go on to face the Steelers next week, which should be a great test to see how they respond, but they've certainly given us reason to hope.

Eagles/Cowboys Inactives for Monday Night: Brown still out

The Eagles and Cowboys announced their inactive players for the Monday Night Showdown:

Eagles: DE Victor Abiamiri, WR Reggie Brown, WR Kevin Curtis, QB A.J. Feeley, G Mike Gibson, OT Winston Justice, LB Joe Mays, G Mike McGlynn

Cowboys: CB Alan Ball, QB Brooks Bollinger, DE Stephen Bowen, S Courtney Brown, OT Doug Free, G Montrae Holland, WR Sam Hurd, G Kyle Kosier.

The Eagles list is almost exactly the same as last week, except Mike Gibson sits out while DE Bryan Smith gets to suit up. The Eagles will once again rely on DeSean Jackson, Jason Avant, Hank Baskett and Greg Lewis to do the receiving, although I expect a heavy does of Brian Westbrook tonight. The Cowboys don't have any surprise inactives, they seem healthy and ready to go.

Enjoy the game tonight, GO BIRDS!!

Offense Has To Keep It Up

Donovan McNabb And The Offense Looked Unstoppable Last Week In The Win Over The Rams But When The Eagles Face The Cowboys It Will Be A Diffrent Story. The Cowboys Have A Better Secondary Then The Rams And Will Have More Success But I Still Think This Offense Is Better Than The Cowboys Defense And I Will Tell You Why. Cowboys Cornerback Terrence Newman Is Likely To Play But Play Injured And If He Is Going To Play DeSean Jackson Or Reggie Brown, I Think Donovan Mcnabb Should Go After Him And For Marty To Call Double Moves So We Can Get Big Plays. The Cowboys Defensive Line Is Good WIth Demarcus Ware And Canty But Not As Good As The Eagles Offensive Line. Last Week When The Eagles Beat The Rams, The Offensive Line For The Eagles Did Not Allow 1 Sack And The Rams Defensive Line Is Pretty Good But Not Better Than The Cowboys. I Don't See The Cowboys Getting Pressure On Mcnabb And He Will Have All The Time In The World To Look For An Open Reciever. If Reggie Brown Can't Go, DeSean Jackson, Hank Baskett, Jason Avant, And Greg Lewis Have To Step Up Again And Help Donovan Mcnabb And Brian Westbrook Out. This Is Going To Be A Good Game But The Eagles Pull Out The Win.

Reggie Brown May Play Against Cowboys

Reggie Brown Has Been Injured With A Hamstring Injury That He Suffered In August When The Eagles Played The Carolina Panthers. Ever Since That Happen, Reggie Brown Has Not Played In 3 Weeks And Was Limited In Practice The Last Couple Of Weeks. If He Can't Go, DeSean Jackson, Hank Baskett, Jason Avant And Greg Lewis Will All Fill In For Him Like They Did In The Eagles Win Over The St. Louis Rams. Reggie Brown May Play Monday Or He May Not But I Would Like To See Him Play And See If He Can Help This Offense Out This Year. The Eagles Need All The Help That They Can Get From There Wide Receivers And Reggie Brown Will Help Out If He Can Play. It Is A Mystery But Will Will Se If Reggie Brown Can Play And Make Some Huge Plays For This Eagles Offense And Donovan McNabb.

Imagine having a disease that only a few people in the world know about, and even fewer people have. 13-Year Old Champion, Josh Rusnock -- Needs your help.

Dean, Here is the story I wrote about 13 year-old Josh Rusnock of Freeland, Pennsylvania for an edition of the Standard Speaker newspaper. I'm so sorry about that missed attachment. Here it is. And everything you said is fine. I will be more than happy to pass the news on to Josh's mom. Please let me know if you need anything further and I would be more than happy to assist you. Josh is such a good kid and it's become part of my mission as well to find every avenue of help for him and his family. Like I said, please let me know if there's anything more you need. Thanks So Much And Take Care-

Imagine having a disease that only a few people in the world know about, and even fewer people have.

By BOBBY MASO

Staff Writer

Imagine being at a crossroads in life, preparing for the transition from boy to young man, yet not being able to do common things like spending time with friends, playing football in the backyard or even riding a bike.

That is the life 13-year-old Josh Rusnock of Freeland lives every day.

On the surface, Josh looks like an average teenager. He loves most sports, and watching some of his favorite teams, the Houston Rockets of the NBA, the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles and the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoys spending time on his uncle's fishing boat where the two like to talk about, what else? fishing.

But under his smile and quiet demeanor is a world hard for most to fathom.

Josh's condition, a degenerative nervous system disease known as leukodystrophy, often makes it hard for him to go to the bathroom unassisted or climb the steps inside his home. His hands shake so hard sometimes that if he were holding a glass of soda, the drink probably would spill all over his lap.

As hard as it is to imagine, it's even harder for Josh, his mom, Rachael, and their family to live through day after day.

Rachael has taken Josh to numerous doctors. Some of them are in awe of the rare condition, while others, including a doctor from The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, have traveled the world, to places like Amsterdam, where the majority of cases exist, just to learn more about leukodystrophy.

Now, Rachael, along with her friends at the Tresckow Fire Co., are preparing for a benefit dart tournament, silent auction and bake sale to be held Sept. 13.

They're hoping to raise enough money so that she can purchase a vehicle large enough to accommodate a power chair that Josh will receive next month, something he needs just to get around.

His mother is hoping that the community can help by donating money or items that can be sold at the auction.

"Right now, all this is for is to raise enough money for Josh so that I can get a van or a vehicle big enough for his chair. And what we're really looking for are food donations, like buns or pierogies, or items for the auction. Whatever anybody can give would be so appreciated, you have no idea," Rachael said.

She explained that the disease has taken a lot out of Josh, whose life "used to revolve around the Freeland YMCA. Now he's forced to stay inside and can pretty much just play video games."

Leukodystrophy comes in many forms and closely resembling multiple sclerosis, thus causing many victims to be misdiagnosed.

The disease is a rare genetic disorder that affects the central nervous system by disrupting the growth or maintenance of the myelin, a fatty "white matter" that protects and insulates the body's nerve fibers. It's a progressive disease that usually gets worse as time goes on.

There are about 70 documented cases of leukodystrophy worldwide, and as of now, there is no cure.

"There are 34 different types of leukodystrophy, but Josh displays symptoms of all of them, so it's hard to pinpoint exactly which one he has," Rachael said.

Josh began showing signs of the disease at age 4 but was not officially diagnosed until he was 10. All the while, Rachael has been taking Josh to doctors and specialists all over, causing the medical bills to mount and making it impossible to buy the van.

"It's gotten so bad that we've actually moved in with my mother in Weatherly because she has a bathroom on the first floor, so Josh won't have to go upstairs. Sometimes, he has to crawl on his hands and knees if he has to go to the bathroom, it's been so bad lately. It's just very difficult," Rachael said.

To help ease the family's financial burden, a special account has been set up at Bank of America, where anyone can make a monetary donation to the Joshua Michael Rusnock Medical Fund. Donations can be made at any Bank of America branch, and Rachael said all are appreciated.

Josh's mom and other siblings, brother John, 15, and twin stepbrothers Trevor and Derek Remak, and his other relatives hope that spreading the word about leukodystrophy will help others who might be experiencing similar health issues but do not know they have the disease.

"I just want to help spread the word because it's very possible that someone else might have this and not know it," Rachael said. "Like I said, it took Josh's doctors a long time to figure out what it was and I'm thinking that there might be others out there who are suffering the same way Josh is, and might be diagnosed with something else because a doctor is unfamiliar with leukodystrophy. I just don't want anyone to have to go through this."

Anyone interested in donating toward the Sept. 13 benefit can contact Jennifer Coxe at 570-427-3329 or by e-mail at jen3329@verizon.net. Donations can also be made by calling the Tresckow Fire Hall at 570- 455-5701.

Fantasy Football Start Em & Sit Em - Week 2

They say in life that "sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield!" This saying holds true for fantasy football. Last season, Mr. Tom Brady was the windshield, squashing everything in sight on the way to a record breaking season. This year, as you might have guessed, Brady was the bug, squished in week one and now out for the year. But, it's not only full seasons that abide to this. It's also a weekly phenomenom. Sometimes a guy is a great start, while others he's a must sit. To find out who is who for week 2, read our Week 2 Start 'Em & Sit 'Em article below.

--------------------
QUARTERBACKS - START 'EM

Philip Rivers (San Diego Chargers) @ Denver

The match-up that will get played up in fantasy circles heading into this game is the battle that will ensue between LaDainian Tomlinson and the weak Broncos rush D. And, rightfully so, the Broncos were ranked 30th in the league last year against the run and gave up 150 rushing yards to the Raiders in week one of the 2008 season. Yes, LT2 should be in for an incredible day. But, don't lose sight of Philip Rivers among all the LT2 hype...

They have never had an easier one than today.

How dominant was this beatdown? Just look at the numbers. 26 to 8 in first downs. The Rams did not convert a third down (0 for 11). Total yards were 522 to 166. Donovan McNabb was not sacked; Marc Bulger went down four times. The Eagles won the time of possession battle by 10 minutes, and just looked like a hot knife through butter all day.

When you beat a team by five touchdowns without a single turnover, special teams or defensive score, you've utterly humiliated them. And when Orlando Pace went to the locker room in the third quarter, it was hard to not see how they were going to win more than four games the rest of the year.

Here's the intriguing thing about this Eagles team, that makes me think that what happened in this game was more than a beatdown of a bad team. They just had a swarm, a feel, to them that was plainly visible. It's what you get when a healthy Brian Dawkins and Assante Samuel makes Sean Considine and Lito Sheppard as their nickel backs.

It's also on offense, where rookie DeSean Jackson just has this poise and presence as he runs his routes and adds to their time of possesion with home-run hitter punt returns. His presence, added to the ferociously inept Rams secondary, gave the Eagles three wideouts with over 100 yards -- Jackson, Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett. And even the special teams look like world-beaters today, with Sav Rocca playing punt and catch on two downed balls inside the five with Quintin Demps. I'm even down with the fact that the world seems to just be ignoring the whole thing, between The Brady Nightmare, the Favre Start, the Cowboys and all the rest. It's hard to under the radar with a 35-point win, but there it is.

Oh, and it all went down on the Shooter Mom's birthday, as me and my siblings wrapped up a weekend of good times away from our kids and spouses, to just roll with the remarkable person that made us all who we are. It was nice of the Eagles to add the present of an utter laugher to everything else that we did this weeked.
http://fivetooltool.blogspot.com - The Sports Blog That Loves You Back!

NFL Week 1 Quick Hitters

This was a great Week 1 in the NFL, with plenty of unexpected outcomes. Here are some quick hitters.
spacer

Welcome to the Show - That wisdom about letting QBs learn on the sidelines for three years is looking less and less brilliant. The Falcons' rookie QB Matt Ryan connected with Michael Jenkins on his first professional pass for a touchdown. The Ravens' rookie QB Joe Flacco played extremely well against the Bengals, avoiding any turnovers or sacks and turning a broken play into a 38-yard touchdown run. Flacco, pressed into premature service because of injuries to Kyle Boller and Troy Smith, should have had a more impressive win than the 17-10 final tally. Fellow rookie Ray Rice fumbled a pitch in the 4th quarter when the Ravens were in scoring range. Yamon Figurs had a punt return for a TD called back for a quesitonable block in the back call. Todd Heap dropped a TD pass in the end zone. Matt Stover missed a 40+ yard field goal attempt. This could have easily been 34-3.
spacer

blahblahblblahblah This goofball is undefeated as an NFL QB.

Friendly Faces in New Places - RB Michael Turner languished in the shadows of LaDainian Tomlinson in San Diego, but showed plenty of ability when he got onto the field. He made the most of his debut as the feature back in Atlanta, going for over 200 yards and three TDs. Brett Favre, of course, threw for two TDs in his Jets' debut. Chad Pennington, now a Dolphin, played well in the loss to Favre, though he threw a coffin-closing interception in the end zone in their loss. FB Lorenzo Neal, long the lead blocker for Tomlinson, is now a Raven. With Neal leading the way, the Ravens ran for 238 yards, including 86 for FB LeRon McClain (serving as the primary HB today) and 70 for rookie Ray Rice. He's had a lot to do with Flacco avoiding any sacks, too.

I'm Not Done Yet - Remember when Donovan McNabb was a fantasy stud? Even without Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown, McNabb exploded for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, giving three different receivers, Hank Baskett, rookie DeSean Jackson and Greg Lewis, 100-yard days. Five other receivers caught passes as well. Pittsburgh RB Willie Parker, believed to be a fantasy also-ran when the Steelers added Mendenhall, had 136 and three touchdowns. Parker and Mendenhall combined for 35 carries, proving that once again the Steelers will adapt with their tools. Favre, as described above, did well also. Ray Lewis stripped a fumble the Ravens and Chris McAllister had an interception. Arizona QB Kurt Warner started slow, but along with Edgerrin James led the Cardinals to a convincing win. Jake Delhomme led the Panthers back with a last-second touchdown, giving them a win that will look even better when Steve Smith returns.

We Don't Know Jack - Tom Brady is apparently out for the season. St. Louis' offense is apparently as inept as their D now. Home teams won for the most part, except on the West Coast. Actually, teams west of the Mississippi are winless except for the Cardinals, who got to play another West Coast team. The Louisiana Superdome is technically simultaneously east, west and north of the Mississippi, but it's on what is known as the East Bank of the river. Cleveland, Houston, Jacksonville, Washington and Seattle do not look anything like potential playoff teams. Check back next week to see how little of that seems to matter.
spacer

Well, we can be sure of one thing. The Redskins made a HUGE mistake when they hired Jim Zorn...and then promoted him after failing to secure any of the head coaches they actually wanted. When asked in the locker room after the Skins' brain-meltingly boring loss to the Giants, Zorn was asked why the Skins weren't in a bigger hurry when they got the ball with about six minutes to go. First Zorn corrected Sonny Jurgensen, telling him there were eight minutes left. Then he explained that he didn't want to give the Giants the ball back with too much time. Umm, ok. Except the score was 16-7. This means one of three things - Zorn just wanted to cover the spread, Zorn thinks there is a nine-point play in pro football, or, and this is the theory that is gaining the most steam, Zorn thought 16 minus 7 is 8. Ouch. Not a good start in Zorn's stint coaching the "black and gold" (as he described the Skins when he was first hired). Now that I think about it, maybe he's just not very bright.

Photo credit - Dr. Ralph Lebron

spacer

News of the Weird - Chad Javon Ocho Cinco nee Johnson got approval from the NFL to have his new legal name on his back. As you can see in the photo above, he wore that name in warmups. Unfortunately, the league forgot to check with their bosses, the sponsors. Reebok apparently has a contractual commitment from Chad that requires Johnson goes on his back. In the game, he wore his former surname.

In other news, the Ravens scored on a true double reverse. Flacco faked a handoff left to Rice (Direction 1), he then turned and gave the ball to a receiver coming on an end around to the right (Direction 2). That receiver pitched the ball to WR Mark Clayton moving right to left (Direction 3) who scored thanks to a nice block downfield from Flacco.

The Bills scored two touchdowns on special teams. One came the traditional way from a Roscoe Parrish return. The other came on a fake field goal, with punter Brian Moorman throwing a TD pass to a defensive end. It was the first TD pass by a punter in nearly a decade.

Listless Rams Embarrassed by Eagles

The St. Louis Rams started off the season in the worst possible way by losing to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Rams literally added insult to injury by losing Leonard Little, Orlando Pace and Drew Bennett to injury. Suddenly, 2008 is looking an awful lot like 2007.
The Rams could not cover the Eagles 3rd through 5th wide receivers down the field. They could not rush or pressure McNabb, even when blitzing. The Rams offensive line (supposedly much improved) could not block anyone, even when the Eagles did not blitz. The Rams had Desean Jackson bottled up on returns for most of the game, but like all good returners, when he got his chance, he took advantage of it with a big return.

Jackson also burned each of the Rams corners on big catches. And to think the Rams passed on him to pick Donnie Avery…who was inactive with an injury. I for one, didn't hate the Avery pick, but the Desean Jackson hype machine rolls on. Here's the list of players who had catches over 30 yards: Jackson, Greg Lewis, Hank Baskett and Jason Avant. This is not an All Star cast in any world. Jackson, Lewis and Baskett all had at least 100 yards receiving.
Searching for a bright spot in this game is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but Randy McMichael did well with his 5 catches for 77 yards.
The bad news outnumbered the good news by a ratio of 50 to 1, and the Rams front office and coaching staff will be looking for answers and I for one will be looking forward to hear their excuses for the blowout loss.
The season could not have started worse for the Rams and they will have to look to bounce back against the defending champion New York Giants at the Edward Jones Dome.

Eagles crush Rams in season opener

Could you ask for a better start to the Eagles season? The Eagles dominated the Rams in every facet of the game in a convincing 38-3 win in their first game of the season. The Birds looked good on offense, racking up over 500 yards of total offense. They looked good on defense as they kept the Rams out of the end zone. They also looked good on special teams as DeSean Jackson had some great returns. It was exactly the game you wanted to see from the Eagles against a weak opponent like the Rams.

From the opening drive, the game was never in question.....

Brown Doubtful for Sunday

If you ask any Eagles fan their concern entering this season, the answer will always be the same. The wide receiving corps. With #1 wide receiver Kevin Curtis on the shelf until probably Week 8, fans hoped and prayed that the powers that be in the Eagles front office would go out and land a big fish like Anquin Boldin. Some fans prayers weren't even that high, and aging veteran like Joe Horn would have done the trick. Well the Eagles chose to stand pat with Reggie Brown assuming the role of the #1 receiver with Hank Baskett and DeSean Jackson getting their share of catches.

Well that plan took a hit as it was announced that Brown is doubtful for Sunday's opener against the Rams with a sore hamstring. Brown hurt his hamstring on the Eagles first offensive play against the Carolina Panthers this pre-season, and has never fully recovered. He practiced with the team on Wednesday, but still had lingering affects, so he was held out of practice yesterday and today.

With Brown out, it means Jackson and Baskett will be the starting receivers, with Jason Avant and Greg Lewis rotating in.

While this does hurt some, missing Brown isn't a crippling injury to the Eagles. In his absence, expect the Eagles to use a lot of splitback formations with Brian Westbrook and Lorenzo Booker. Also look for tight end L.J. Smith's workload to increase. While Jackson and Baskett will get their share of receptions, Donovan McNabb's favorite targets will be Westbrook and Smith.

WR Brown Listed as Doubtful for Opener

Wide Receiver Reggie Brown was listed as doubtful today for the season opener against the Rams on Sunday. Brown has been plagued by a hamstring injury for most of the preseason.
Head Coach Andy Reid said he wouldn't name his starters, and would go with a committee at receiver, rotating Hank Baskett, Greg Lewis, Jason Avant, [...]
