Cubs at Rays open game thread (Fukudome leads off!)

B-REF PREVIEW | GAMEDAY | WEATHER | ACB CHAT ROOM

Andy Sonnastine vs. Cubs hitters: 0-5 (Reed Johnson)

Carlos Zambrano vs. Rays hitters: 4-19

When & Where: 6:10 pm, Tampa Bay, WGN

Johnson is the only Cub to have faced Sonnastine. Only 3 Rays have faced Zambrano. Cliff Floyd and Gabe Gross are a combined 4-16 with 9 walks. Dioner Navarro is 0-3. If you hit it down the lines, it's pretty easy to get it out of the park. It's just 315 down the LF line and 322 down the RF line. Then again, if you hit it as hard and as far as Floyd hit his long ball last night, it doesn't much matter. It was the longest home run for the Rays this season at 441 feet. Soriano has hit 2 further than that this year (447 and 443) and has 3 of the 5 longest home runs on the Cubs this season (Lee 2nd, Edmonds 4th).

Fantasy Rundown: Bruce Almighty

Jay Bruce had a spectacular debut week in Cincinnati, and should be a top fantasy option for the rest of the season. He wasn't the only top prospect reaching the big leagues however as Oakland called up Carlos Gonzalez. Elsewhere in this edition Ken Griffey Jr. nears a milestone, Bartolo Colon keeps winning, and Dontrelle Willis regains a starting spot.

Gallardo dominates but Gagne blows the victory

Yovani Gallardo made his 2008 debut for the Brewers on Sunday and picked up right where he left off in 2007. Gallardo faced the Reds on Sunday and went seven innings and struck out four batters while only giving up four hits including a solo home run to Edwin Encarnacion which was the only run Gallardo allowed all day. Gallardo looked solid all day. He walked Corey Patterson to start the game, but he immediately settled down and appeared to be in mid-season form.

Padres turn attention to Gross

According to Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports, the San Diego Padres are now turning their attention to Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Gabe Gross. The Padres had been trying to get Matt Murton from the Chicago Cubs to play left, but have been unable to get a deal worked out.

Tony Gwynn Jr Looking at September Callup

The 23 year old Gwynn should find himself in the mix for AB's in Milwaukee come September. He's hitting .300 with 25 SB's in Nashville and was 7-15 in limited time with the Brewers earlier this year. He'll fight for time with veteran Geoff Jenkins, Corey Hart, and Gabe Gross.

Before the season, Gwynn looked to be no more of a future 4th outfielder, hitting .271 in Double-A Nashville in 2005 after hitting .243 at the same level the year before. That could change as he's currently having his best year as a professional. He's probably going to find himself buried on the depth chart behind Hart and Gross, but that could change if the Brewers fall out of the race in the next few weeks.
