Game 95: Tigers at Orioles

PREGAME: As the second half kicks off it will be Kenny Rogers taking on Garrett Olson. Olson has struggled in his last 2 starts surrendering 13 runs in 9 innings. He has a 5.65 ERA this year but is better at home.
Carlos Guillen is out of the lineup because he's in Detroit. [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Game 95: Tigers at Orioles", url: "http://www.detroittigersweblog.com/2008/07/game-95-tigers-at-orioles/" });

It Almost Got Uggla: 2008 MLB All-Star Game Thoughts

Dan Uggla is the talk of the internets today......yea, he had a pretty bad MLB All-Star game. But he should feel lucky, he could've been even more of a goat.

Then again, he was given a couple chances at redemption and came up short.

Monday Morning Manager (My Weekly Take On the Tigers)

Last Week: 3-4
This Week: (7/8-9: CLE; 10-13: MIN)

The Tigers will only have one All-Star on the American League roster next week -- Carlos Guillen -- and if that brings back ghoulish memories of 100-loss seasons, don't go there. The Tigers are a .500 team -- at the moment -- who are simply lacking players with eye-popping numbers. No Tigers made the starting lineup, so to have more than one at-large selection in what has, so far, been a disappointing season, would have been considered a bit of an upset.

Too bad for Marcus Thames, though -- and too bad for AL manager Terry Francona, who would have made a bold and daring move by adding Thames to the roster despite his not being a quote-unquote everyday player. Thames's tendency to hit a home run every 10 at-bats or so is not only All-Star-like, it's Hall of Fame-like. But we'll just cut Francona some slack and assume he had too many outfielders from which to choose.

Plus, this year's All-Star is Guillen, not Robert Fick or Tony Clark or Justin Thompson or any of the other non-deserving Tigers who made teams back in the day, just for the sake of having a Tiger tag along. Guillen, though having a less-than-spectacular year, numbers-wise (surprised Placido Polanco didn't get the nod instead), is a worthy All-Star, if only for his resume. He's not going to win a Gold Glove, but Guillen is still one of the Tigers you don't mind seeing at the plate when a base hit is in order, or even a home run. He tends to go deep when it matters.

As for Guillen's team, this is an important week for the Tigers. Of course, you can pretty much say that for every week going forward; that's what happens when you spend the first quarter of the season sniffing the dirt.

But this is particularly important, because you have the Indians -- the wretched Indians (and I love writing that) -- coming to town for two games, then the red-hot Twins invading for four. The Tigers are an unsightly 11-21 in games within their own division. It is literally impossible to win a division or qualify for a wild card with such a horrible divisional record; there are just too many of those kinds of games on your schedule. The Tigers are seven games out of first place -- not an insurmountable deficit, but also perilously close to double digits, and those holes are very hard to climb out of after the All-Star break.

What's more, the Twins are going to have to be leapfrogged, sooner or later, if the Tigers want to catch the first place White Sox. Doing well against Minnesota this week in Detroit -- where the Tigers have performed very well lately -- will be very well-timed right about now.

Still never thought I'd be as enamored with a 44-44 record as I am this morning.

The Edgar Defense

When the 2007 season came to a close the Tigers had a top priority on their to-do list and that was to get a shortstop. Carlos Guillen's knees and inconsistency making the routine play had dictated a move across the diamond to first base. So Dave Dombrowski moved swiftly to upgrade the infield [...]

Monday Morning Manager (My Weekly Take On the Tigers)

Last Week: 3-3
This Week: (6/2-4: at Oak; 6/6-8: CLE)

So now it's Brandon Inge at 3B, Carlos Guillen occasionally in LF when he's not DH-ing, Marcus Thames in LF more often than not, Jeff Larish DH-ing when Guillen isn't -- at least until Gary Sheffield returns from the DL. Got all that?

Tigers manager Jim Leyland is apparently opting for the "more is more" method of managing, juggling his lineup so much that you half expect a big top to appear and some calliope music to start playing.

The latest incarnation of Leyland's lineup shoved past the Seattle Mariners yesterday, 7-5, and it was Inge's strong play at third that helped.

Guillen is on his fourth position as a Tiger, and his third in two months. Last year he was a decent shortstop, but with limited range. This spring he was going to potentially be, according to those who supposedly know about such things, "a Gold Glover" at first base. Then he was going to be "one hell of a" third baseman. Now he's going to be "fine" in left field. The quotes are there because they are words that have been used in describing Guillen's have glove, will travel career turn over the past year.

A cynic might suggest -- and maybe not just a cynic but a realist -- that the reason Carlos Guillen is playing so many positions is because he's not any good at any of them. And such a fellow might just be right. But enough negativity.

The Tigers have won three of four, are showing some more esprit de corps, and even the sour puss of Inge is turning jocular. He's "ecstatic" and "thrilled" and all sorts of other nirvanic words about being returned -- at least more often than before -- to third base, the only true love of his baseball life. Not that I'm unhappy about this; Inge is, for real, "one hell of a" third baseman. Even those who DON'T know much about such things can see that. So it's not a bad thing to have his glove in the game, especially after seeing how Guillen and, before him, Miguel Cabrera, butchered the position earlier this season. It's that .225 bat that gets me. Ahh -- but nothing negative.

It's too bad that the Tigers can't feast on the Mariners more, but maybe they're showing signs of life. Six games against the surprising A's and almost-as-disappointing Indians this week give the Tigers a chance to cobble together some more momentum gleaned from this successful weekend series in Seattle. We'll see.

At least Brandon Inge is happy. It's a start.

Detroit: Pulling Up The Rear

First, the Tigers were forced to move Miguel Cabrera from third base because the former Marlin and current fatty didn't seem comfortable manning the position. Well now, Jim Leyland says Carlos Guillen had some comfort issues of his own, while playing third base:

Jim Leyland Lets Everyone Know That Carlos Guillen Has Been Pushing Himself Too Hard

"He can hardly move — he's got hemorrhoids so bad," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Tuesday. "He's been playing with hemorrhoids that probably need to be lanced. He probably shouldn't have been out there." Leyland said the hemorrhoids have been bothering Guillen for about four or five days, but they have gotten worse in the last few days. "He could hardly walk." Leyland said.

Fantasy Rundown: Cabrera Ready for Primetime

Daniel Cabrera is getting harder and harder to ignore. For years he has teased the Orioles and fantasy owners with his potential, and now he finally appears to be fulfilling it in his fifth major league season. It was a good day for starting pitchers as Justin Verlander showed signs of progress, Chad Billingsley continued his recent run of dominance, and another young Red Sox prospect shut down the Royals.

Tigers Still Don't Get It

The Detroit Tigers haven't yet learned from their mistakes, or errors. For the last few seasons the Tigers have put up with Carlos Guillen's endless string of errors cuased mainly by poor glovework and bad throws. Despite having the best third baseman in the AL in Brandon Inge, the Tigers have opted to go with Guillen at third even though he has proven he cannot handle short or first. Commiting his 3rd and 4th errors in a handfull of games, he blew what should have been a win on Sunday against the Twinkies. To make matters worse, the staff and the media have pinned the loss on the relievers, who had gotten the ground ball to end the inning until Guillen and his "hard-as-rock" hands got in the way. With the wins as hard as they for the Tigers I can't understand why he is still standing over there instead of Inge. He needs to be moved to DH or traded for more pitching. Bottom line his bat is good, but the Tigers have enough good bats, they need good gloves and good pitching to salvage this season. - Ryno

Off-Season Mishaps Costing the Tigers

While Jim Leyland continues to play musical chairs with his lineup, Dave Dombrowski sits and wonders, "Where did I go wrong". Of the changes he made in the off-season, it seems only 1 or 2 are actually working.

With Jones out, does Inge now have a role?

The Detroit Tigers decided to designate left fielder Jacque Jones for assignment, effectively ending his time with the team, even with the $3 million still owed to him this season. To replace Jones on the roster, minor league outfielder Matt Joyce was called up from AAA-Toledo. According to manager, Jim Leyland, Joyce will spend time in both left and right. So where does, undefined position, Brandon Inge stand with the team?
