Sunday Spotlight: Texans vs. Indy's pass defense

It's the biggest game in Houston Texans franchise history. Admittedly, we're not talking about decades of legend here -- the team has been in existence since 2002 -- but at two games over .500 for the first time ever and facing a Colts team they've never beaten in Indianapolis, the Texans now have the opportunity to make a very large divisional (and potential postseason) statement. In beating the Bengals, 49ers, and Bills in the last three weeks, Houston's formerly porous defe...

Titans' Johnson presents 49ers with new challenge

SANTA CLARA – Peyton Manning entered last week's game against the 49ers having thrown 15 touchdown passes and having been sacked only twice all season. He left it with three more sacks but no additional touchdown passes.
It was a virtuoso performance by 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, one recognized by observers around the league. His former colleague, Mike Martz, said on the NFL Network that the 49ers' defensive front took Manning "to the woodshed. They really di...

NFL Picks & Pans: Week 9

After a mediocre record last week, I will try to return to prominence once again in making these picks straight up rather the tough way, against the spread. I'll Pick & Pan the Ravens/Bengals game in tomorrow's posting. So here goes:
Colts over Texans: While everyone is jumping on the Houston bandwagon, I'll stay on the one with Indianapolis and Peyton Manning.
Patriots over Dolphins: Even though Miami has played New England tough, I still see the rested Pats figuring ou...

Colts-49ers redux

Two thoughts after watching the Colts' 18-14 victory over San Francisco again. The 49ers really played a smart game. Great defensive effort. That said, credit the Colts for sticking with it when everything wasn't going according to plan. The offense had to grind, the defense got tough in the second half, and despite the injuries the Colts found a way. It's the mark of a solid team, something we've come to expect.

Here are the observations:

* Opening kickoff is to the 6, whic...

Eyes in the Backfield-Texans

18 Things to watch for during Sunday's Colts/Texans game

The Horse has been unkind to the Texans
Last week's game was closer than we would have guessed, but a win is a win. This week, the Colts face a stiff test from division rival Houston. The Texans come in hot, having won three in a row and four out of five games. With two games still left to play with the Texans, Houston could jump back into the division race with an upset in Indy. That makes this Sunday's game a monst...

SB Nation polled us football writers about who had looked the best (and worst) for the first half of the 2009 NFL season. No surprise, Peyton Manning looks like the NFL MVP. The article is posted on SBNation.com, and it is written by some schmuck who runs a Colts blog.

Let’s address the latest Indianapolis Colts/Peyton Manning concern before it gets started. If it’s not already too late.

Jeff Fisher wears Peyton Manning jersey, pisses off Titans fans

(Sanford Myers/The Tennessean)
Speaking of Tony Dungy, recently he was the guest speaker for a Rally in Rocketown luncheon. At the luncheon, he was introduced to the crowd by Jeff Fisher, whose record against Dungy when Dungy coached was, let's just say, really bad. However, Fisher is not a vindictive prick, and actually has this thing many coaches today lack, often referred to as a "sense of humor."
Prior to introducing Dungy, Fisher decided to inject a little humor into ...
