Colts Survive Ravens with Defense

by Matt SnyderFiled under: Colts, Ravens, AFC North, AFC SouthHad you told the Baltimore Ravens they would win the turnover battle against Peyton Manning and the Colts on Sunday, I'm pretty sure they would have assumed the result would be a victory. Of course, getting into the end zone against Indy generally is a necessity in order to win the football game. The Ravens didn't do that and lost, 17-15. Despite allowing 354 yards of total offense -- 135 to burgeoning star Ray Rice -- the ...

These Men Are The Best QBs Of The Day. Really.6

I'm sure the fact that they were facing the Lions and Browns defenses had nothing to do with their spectacular numbers. But some quality defenses had tough afternoons as well. •Colts 17, Ravens 15. When's the last time Peyton Manning threw more INTs than TDs? (Rhetorical question, know-it-all commenters.) It was the Colts defense that carried the day, keeping Baltimore out of the end zone, and picking off a marching Joe Flacco inside the red zone to seal it. •Giants 34, Falcons 31.The...

Ravens: Anything for Billy

I'm betting nobody can identify the literary reference in the headline of this entry, but who cares? Billy Cundiff has become the Ravens offense, drilling three straight field goals to put them in the lead late in the first half.

You also have to be impressed with the secondary, which has intercepted Peyton Manning twice so far, but I've got to throw in a caveat at this point. The Ravens have gotten a pair of turnovers and gotten great field position off both and only have six p...

Ravens: Billy ball (Part Deux)

There has been more action in the first 11 minutes of this game than there was all night on Monday. The Ravens intercepted Peyton Manning and Billy Cundiff is already on the board again with a 43-yard field goal.

The Ravens really needed to make more out of that possession than three downs and a field goal, but the crowd definitely has been bouyed by Cundiff's successful debut.

Ravens: Up against it already

Sure enough, Peyton Manning dropped a huge play on the Ravens on that first possession, the 66-yard strike to Pierre Garcon setting up a quick touchdown and putting the onus on Joe Flacco and the offense to answer.

The Ravens dodged a bullet on a Lardarius Webb fumble on the ensuing kickoff, getting the play overturned on replay, but need to do something with this first possession to change the early momentum. So far, they've largely kept the ball on the ground and have grinded out ...

Ravens win toss...and I disagree

I've been saying the same thing all week. If the Ravens win the toss, they have to take the ball first instead of automatically defering to the second half. If they can move the ball, they can move the ball right now. if they can't, they can't. But one thing is certain, if Peyton Manning pulls a Carson Palmer and drives the Colts right down the field, that puts a ton of extra pressure on Joe Flacco and the offense.

They won the toss and deferred.

Ouch.

Sunday Spotlight: How do the Ravens stop Peyton Manning?

It's been an impossible question for defenses facing the Colts all season -- what do we do about Peyton Manning(notes)? If you blitz him, he puts up his best numbers (54 of 78 for 719 yards and four touchdown passes and a quarterback rating of 109.9). If you back off to cover Reggie Wayne(notes), he'll kill you with bubble screens at the line and short seam routes to Dallas Clark(notes). If you give your linebackers too much help with Clark, he'll mess you up with deep inside rout...

I'm going to walk around the parking lot trying to mooch tailgate food for the next hour or so, but I'll be here all day, spouting whatever comes to mind during today's game between the Ravens and Colts.

If you want go get an early start, you can go check out today's column in the print edition and on the Web site. I don't think the Ravens have much margin for error left, but that isn't exactly a revelation at this point.

Right now, I think it would help a lot...

Yeah, I don't think this qualifies as a 'rivalry'
Last week's game was one of the greatest of all time. This week's game? Well, it should be pretty solid in its own way. Indy travels to Baltimore to take on the Ravens in a matchup of preseason favorites in the AFC. Indy, of course, is off to a 9-0 start. The Ravens? They are really glad they've played Cleveland twice. They currently sit at 5-4 and...

Here's what's on the mind as we swim through a rainy Thursday in Indy:

* I realize any time Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are mentioned in a discussion, there's bound to be some debate. And while I made a pointed opinion about this week's AFC Offensive Player of the Week award, and welcome views contrary to my own, let me assure that it wasn't slap at Manning. Looking at the body of work for nine games, Manning has been exceptional. I would still take him over Brady to lea...

As Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning sees it, the challenge isn’t significantly different from a week ago.
