Leave The Broncos Cup Please

News from Broncos Country:
- Brandon Marshall was suspended for three games this season by commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league's conduct policy. His suspension could be reduced to two games if he attends counseling. After numerous encounters with the law, Marshall vows to become a better man on and off the field.
- More bad news: Rookie fullback Ryan Torain was competing for the #1 spot alongside Selvin Young and Andre Hall (Micheal Pittman was moved to tailback), until his fractured his elbow in camp today. Torain is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.
- On a lighter note (pun intended): I spotted Montrae Holland (with fellow offensive lineman Ryan Harris) in a Wendy's commercial this morning. Remember, Holland has been trying to slim down to 325 lbs. in order to practice with his team. I haven't seen him pushing a sled in front of Colorado's State Capitol Building, and I sure as hell hope I don't see him at a Wendy's drive-thru. Here's the commercial:

- Jay Cutler has replaced John Lynch. No, not on the field. Only on television. Cutler will host a weekly football wrap-up show on Ch. 4 Monday evenings.
- Center Tom Nalen has missed 7 consecutive practices.
- The rookies are doing a nice job adjusting to the demanding schedule of playing for professional football. It hasn't been an easy ride.
- There's no doubt that kicker Matt Prater has a lot to prove especially as Jason Elam's predecessor. He seems to be doing very well so far.

Could the Texans outrush the Broncos this season?

Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is a made man. Of course, back-to-back Super Bowl wins with a team generally lends itself to a bit of job security. But how much longer will it hold up? After finishing last season with his first losing record in the past 9 years, should Denver's ball coach really be worried?

Rumor Has it...

The number one rule of the pre-season as it relates to fantasy football is never read too much into a player's production. Please excuse me as I contradict myself for a moment…Jason Campbell looked outstanding in the pre-season opener against the Colts! All excitement over the pre-season starting aside however, there are plenty of reasons that Jason Campbell finds himself on my hot list

Oakland Raiders vs San Francisco 49ers: Let's call it a draw for now

So now we wait. Friday can't come soon enough for the Raider Nation to get its first glimpse of their 2008 Oakland Raiders, 'glimpse' being the operative word. The first preseason game is not a game for fans to get good long looks at most of the players that will be starting on opening day, but there will be a series of plays to go around for most of those starters on Friday night. Yesterday was a 'first impression' from the stance that each team got to measure the other before showing their wares on Friday night. Let's see how they did....

THINGS I LEARNED TODAY -- TAVERN TALK

Patriot Linebacker Jerod Mayo is going to be a very good three-down player for the Patriots. His ability to learn the scheme will enhance his production. He will make a huge difference in the Pats defense this year. Prior to the draft, I graded Mayo as my best linebacker because I was not sure that Keith Rivers could impact the game on third down.

The Broncos will miss Brandon Marshall in the first three games of the year. Denver opens with a killer schedule: at Oakland, home against the Chargers, and then home versus New Orleans. I expect Darrell Jackson to fill the role. If he can be more consistent, he might be a huge sleeper this year.

Willis McGhee's knee does not like the way new coach John Harbaugh is practicing. When a knee is swelling from practice this early in camp, there may be trouble all year. Ray Rice is going to get his chance.

I wish someone would pay for Hall of Famer Fred Dean to get his Super Bowl ring back. I have the same one and without him, I would never be able to cherish that moment.

Every time there are trade talks and rumors coming from Green Bay, they never quite seem right. This I know for a fact.... When I was working at the Hotel California, the same type of stuff was floating around about Randy Moss and talks with Oakland. Someone out there has bad sources in Green Bay.

I believe Brad Childress and the Vikings. I doubt the Packers would ever call them.

Miami's depth chart does not mean a single thing -- they will be making changes throughout the preseason and it will remind some of a hockey game with all the line changes. Most teams' preseason depth charts are more acts of confusion than a means for clearing up things.

How can Aaron Rodgers beat out Favre? Rodgers has never played and would have to work with a 50% Green Bay playbook. Favre has played and will run a sophisticated scheme and system. There is no competition.

The answer is "Yes." Someone asked me if Raheem Morris, the defensive back coach of the Bucs, is head coaching material. Personally, I have never seen him coach. However, I have heard from people I respect and they regard him very highly. He has even managed to get Phillip Buchanon to at least attempt to tackle, and that alone is a miracle.

Shawn Andrews is battling depression and has decided to come to camp on Friday. There is no better medical care than what the NFL offers, and it's good he is in camp. He can get the help he needs so that he can deal with what he's enduring. I feel very badly for Shawn, but he should have let the Eagles help him earlier. He could have saved himself $200,000.
