Breaking down Jets vs. Patriots

Before we get to the six-pack analysis, a tiny bit of news: The Jets added RT Damien Woody (illness) to the injury report tonight as probable.

I was talking to former Jets great Curtis Martin the other day, and we were on the subject of coaches getting emotional in front of their teams. I asked him if Bill Parcells ever choked up, and Martin couldn't recall any episodes. He said Parcells might have become emotional in "more intimate settings," but not in front of the team.

Jets-Jaguars preview

A six-pack of thoughts on tomorrow's game at the Rexolands:

1. Good bye-brations. Since 2002, the Jets are 6-1 following the bye. In fact, they went a cool 3-0 under Eric Mangini, including big upsets over the Patriots and Steelers. That's a lot to live up to, Rex.

2. Start fast. A couple of reasons why the Jets need to jump out quickly. First, the crowd. Rex Ryan challenged the fans to give their lungs a workout, but the Jets need to give them something to cheer about. if not, ...

It sure looked that way! Until Mike Alstott put the ball on the ground, and no one saw Curtis Martin take off his right glove! ....its easier if you just watch. Sit down first though!

EX-JETS PILE ON PRAISE FOR SANCHEZ

Joe Namath sounded off about the bright future of Mark Sanchez this week. He noted that the rookie QB had “spark and fire” and that Sanchez “had impressed me big-time.” Curtis Martin was also on hand and said that there’s “something I like about Sanchez.” [...]

Ground and Pound...

From the initial press conference to introduce him to the NY media, Rex Ryan has stated that this will be his approach on offense. When you look at the talent level of the roster, it makes a lot of sense. The Jets have one of the best offensive lines in the league and a crew of running backs that all have game breaking skills.
Thomas Jones has filled in adequately after Hall of Famer Curtis Martin retired. He is a bruising back who does not shy away from contact. He is a good blocker for pic...

Miles Austin and the Poison Pill

By now we've all heard that wide receiver Miles Austin is being wined and dined by the New York Jets who see Austin as the heir apparent to Laveraneus Coles.
The Cowboys gave Austin a $1.545 million tender offer that would require a team to give up a second-round pick as compensation if the Cowboys did not match. The restricted free-agent signing period ends on April 17. Four restricted free agents have signed offer sheets this off-season, but their teams matched the offers. If the Jets ...

Curtis Martin Is No Different Than Jay-Z

Curtis Martin, former Jet and Patriots all-pro running back, is planning on purchasing a part of an NFL team next year. Martin retired before the start of this season, ending his 12 year professional career due to a bone on bone knee injury. Right now, its not looking like its the NY Jets he's planning on buying into...so that leaves 31 other teams he could have a shot at part-owning. That's news, but the real news is his reasons for doing this near unprecedented purchase:

Curtis Martin the Owner

Today in one of his many interviews Curtis Martin talked about his dream of becoming an NFL owner.
"I never wanted to talk about it and I didn't talk about it as a player because I thought it was inappropriate," he said. "But now that I'm retired, I can say my dream is ownership."
Curtis Martin said that his idea to become an owner is not a new one. He just wanted to wait and talk about it until after his official retirement announcement so as not to distract the team. I wonder if Tiki Barber would have done the same thing?

The Curtis Martin Way

With his impending retirement Curtis Martin should be celebrated for many reasons.

He's the 4th all-time leading rusher and a five-time pro bowler. He is without a doubt one of the best Jets players in the franchise's history. A gifted running back, he is one of the most unselfish players you will ever see. He never held out, never complained about playing time and even in the end, took less money to free up salary cap room. He was always gracious with the press, the fans and anyone who came into contact with him, while in uniform or not.

And better yet, Curtis Martin should be applauded for what he didn't do off the field. In other words, he was never arrested ~ all while spending most of his career in one of the easiest cities to find trouble, and where often, temptation finds you.

We are amid one of the worst years in NFL history in terms of players getting into trouble with the law. We've had one player suspended for the season (PacMan Jones), another player told not to come to training camp until a federal investigation is completed (Michael Vick) and a team with more players on the roster with police records than it had wins last year (Bengals). And a smattering of other legal issues throughout the league popping up left and right.
