Irish QB Golson expects more in 2d year as starter

(Eds: Updates.) By TOM COYNE Associated Press Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson is expecting a lot more of himself and the Fighting Irish offense next season.

''Last year we didn't really make our mark,'' Golson said. ''You can kind of blame it on the excuse it was just our first year going through it. But at the end of the day, we didn't do our job. That's definitely an emphasis for me personally, to make this offense better and have a better season.''

As a first-year starter after a season on the scout team as freshman, Golson put up respectable numbers as the Irish finished the regular season undefeated and were ranked No. 1 for the first time in nearly 19 years.

He was 187 of 318 passing, a 58.8 completion rate, with 12 touchdown passes and six interceptions. He had a pass efficiency rating of 131.01, placing him a run-of-the-mill 62nd among quarterbacks nationwide. But it was substantially better than the first seasons of previous Notre Dame standouts Br

Top 5 Most Villainous Notre Dame Quarterbacks Of The Past 20 Years

Can you feel the hate? If you are a true fan of the Fighting Irish, there is no doubt that you do. However, none of that hate is remotely close to that of the hate felt by Notre Dame quarterbacks. Right or wrong, Irish quarterbacks are the subject of jokes, praise, and disdain more so, it would seem, than any other player in college football.

	They are villains.

The thing about villains that makes them so complicated is that they are equally loved by some just as they are hated by the masses... sometimes. Yes, sometimes they play more of the anti-hero role, but they can also just be reviled by all. Either way, they all fall into the category of villain.

I wondered which Notre Dame quarterback in the past 20 years was the biggest villain. So, I went to the chore of dissecting each one of the 18 different starting quarterbacks that the Fighting Irish have had over the past 20 years, and applied them to a mathematical formula. It's science- and in a day and age where ...

BCS National Championship Game: Yes, it's real, Irish

In the words of Natalie Merchant, "These are days you'll remember."

Not 10,000 but rather twice that number of maniacs appeared on Saturday for a Notre Dame pep rally in Miami, a pep rally in which no members of the Fighting Irish football team were present. But what did the fans care? Notre Dame football has come so far, so quickly (we're looking at you, Mr. Reilly, and your article from Aug. 16) that those who support the program don't quite know how to manage their exuberance.

Notre Dame, unranked at the start of the season, is both No. 1 and playing for the national championship? Really?

Notre Dame is the first school in the BCS era to hold a No. 1 ranking both in the BCS standings and in graduation rate? Really?

Notre Dame has, according to Rivals.com, the top-ranked recruiting class in the nation after the verbal commitment by five-star safety Max Redfield of Mission Viejo, Calif.? Really? What about the inclement South Bend weather and the diffi...

A Hater’s Guide to the National Championship game

Bowl Season is here. That great time of year when people spend endless hours passionately rooting for schools they never heard of and forget about seconds after the final whistle. It is all building up to the National Championship between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish – two schools with great tradition and history. That is, unless you don’t give a **** about tradition and history.
Who do you support if you are a National Championship hater?
If you are tired of one conference winning every year?
If you can’t stand the thought of a school’s fan base talking endlessly about how special they are?
If you just don’t care?
Well, if the thought of either Notre Dame or Alabama holding up that weird crystal football thing makes you physically ill, but you still need someone to root against on January 5th, you’re in luck. We have gone through all of the most important categories in determining who to cheer for, and with a point system determined entirely and subj...

Notre Dame fans take another shot at Bama with t-shirt

The great t-shirt wars between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got even more aggressive yesterday when this shirt hit the internet. This follows a tweet that Jimmy Clausen made that offended many Bama fans. This shirt reads:
Golden Domers vs Mobile Homers
January 7, 2013
South Florida
Bama is currently around a 10 point favorite over the Irish. They may want to hold off from making these until the clock hits zero. Obviously, this shirt is not sanctioned by the university.

Notre Dame t-shirt: Catholics vs Cousins

The Notre Dame-Miami rivalry is dubbed the Catholics vs Convicts rivalry, well now the Irish have cleverly come up with a slogan for the BCS Championship game against Alabama.
Catholics vs Cousins
Former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen tweeted a picture of the shirt (he has since deleted the tweet). This is the second shirt attempt the Irish have made that’s caught our attention. See WarIrish.

The shirt has been around.

Jimmy Clausen smack talks 'Bama with shirt

With another week until bowl season really gets underway, admittedly, it’s been a bit of a slow start to the college football news week at Crystal Ball Run. Thankfully though, former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen gave us something to talk about on this quiet Monday afternoon, by proving two age-old theories: 1. Idiocy does remain supreme (regardless of where you get your college education), and... 2. No one has a more warped sense of reality than Clausen does. That’s because on Monday, Clausen took to Twitter and shared a picture of a piece of paraphernalia he’s picked up prior to the Irish’s BCS National Championship Game appearance against Alabama. The picture featured a t-shirt which said: “Catholics vs. Cousins,” which is a new twist on the “Catholics vs. Convicts” meme of the late 1980’s between Miami and Notre Dame, and apparently a cheap shot at the citizens of Alabama. Umm, alright Jimmy. We all thought you were a little bigger than that. Apparently not....

Notre Dame was even less well-equipped to face the Orangemen, who were 2-8 and had already fired coach Greg Robinson the week before. The Irish managed just 41 yards rushing and lost 24-23, their own students pelting the Notre Dame players with snow balls at the end of the season finale.

SOTT: Draft Profile Michael Floyd

The next few weeks here on State of the Texans we will be doing some draft profiles of some particular players who could possibly fit into the Texans plans. We are not going to try to piece together scouting reports, but we enlist help of bloggers who actually cover the respective player and their school.
Once again we get the help of a fellow blogger, Eric Murtaugh, who covers the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at One Foot Down (SB Nation). I ask him about one of the top wide receivers in the draft, Michael Floyd. The senior Irish wide receiver had 100 receptions for 1,147 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2011. At 6’3″ 224 lbs. Floyd has put himself as one of the best wide receivers in Irish history ranking him along the likes of Tim Brown, Raghib Ismail and Derek Mayes. Floyd did not make a catch in only one collegiate game against Navy in 2008 when he was injured early in the game and holds the school record for 28 career touchdown receptions.

Can we have a little background on Floyd?...

Weis’ first Kansas recruit brings more baggage from South Bend

While USC is waiting on pins and needles to learn the fate of one former five-star quarterback recruit from Southern California, another has already broken the news: Per his Twitter feed, former Notre Dame starter Dayne Crist is on his way to Kansas, where he'll reunite with his old head coach, Charlie Weis, for his fifth and final season of eligibility. Crist should be immediately eligible next season as a grad student.
That comes as no surprise: Weis' reputation for molding prolific pocket passers may be the only part of his reputation that survived his tenure in South Bend relatively intact. His first quarterback there, Brady Quinn, smashed every Notre Dame passing record and left as a first-round draft pick on the heels of back-to-back BCS bowls; his successor, Jimmy Clausen, overcame a nightmarish start as a freshman with a surprisingly brilliant junior season in 2009 that made him a second-rounder.
The hype for Crist wasn't on the level of the circus that accompani...
