Dancin’ with the Skins

What a roller coaster ride for Redskins fans!
The season started out as a disaster. We had players dropping like flies. Phillip Daniels went down, possibly with a career ending knee injury. Promising defensive end Alex Buzbee also went down with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Fred Smoot went down with a sprain that fortunately doesn't seem to be too bad. I was starting to have flashbacks of the infamous body bag game in Philly. Not only were two of the injuries serious, but they were all in positions where we could ill afford to lose anyone.
But good ol' Danny was not about to allow his season to be ruined in the first day of training camp. He went out and pulled the trigger on a trade that brings Jason Taylor from Miami to the Nation's Capital.
The trade forces us to give up a second round pick in 2009 and a sixth round in 2010. Furthermore, Jason Taylor claims that he's willing to play for the final two years of his contract without negotiating a new deal. Despite media criticism, we had the cap room tucked away for a rainy day and now we've got a potential game-changing player.
Let's hope we got our serious injuries out of the way and that this first day isn't a harbigner of more to come. I'm excited at the potential of Jason Taylor, especially now that he's talking about two years and the trade price tag is a little lower. With the injury situation, I think we needed to pull the trigger on a deal somewhere. We were already thin to begin with.
In other news, in case you missed it, all of the Redskins draft picks are signed and attending now that Fred Davis has signed. There are no reports that anyone slept in, which in itself is a good sign for Davis.
Hail Skins!

Devin Thomas Signs

Devin Thomas signed a 4 year contract worth a total of $4.8 million today leaving Fred Davis the only unsigned Skins draft pick.
The incomparable Jason La Canfora also reports that a Fred Davis signing seems easy to do by the time camp opens on Monday.
Not much to say other than woohoo!

Redskins Sign Kelly

The Redskins signed 2nd round pick and future slot receiving stud, Malcolm Kelly to 4 year deal today as well as 6th rounder pick and punter Durant Brooks. To my knowledge, this leaves only fellow second round picks Fred Davis and Devin Thomas left to sign. Kelly's signing likely will be the model for the other two contracts with both unsigned players probably getting a smidge more since they were selected higher.
As the ESPN article points out, there was some concern that 1st and 2nd rounders would be hard to get into camp because of concerns over the impending CBA debacle in '11. Rookies are smart to do what Kelly did and get a one time guaranteed payment (rather than some of the escalator clauses so popular before) in case the CBA allows them to cash in big.
Given the relatively early signing for Kelly, expect Thomas and Davis to be in camp, and also expect them to be secretly pissed since all three of them holding out has more effect.

Yardbarker visits USC Pro Day

What's up, Yard?

I spent today at USC's Pro Day, where Sedrick Ellis, Keith Rivers, Thomas Williams, John David Booty, Lawrence Jackson, Fred Davis, Sam Baker, Chilo Rachal, Terrell Thomas, and others, worked out for NFL scouts. Below is a bit of what I learned after watching the drills, and also from speaking to coaches and scouts.

These are the five guys who I watched most closely. I shot some video and a bunch of photos; between now and the Draft, we'll release some of the video, and I'll post some of the photos here in the comments.
- Dewey
CHAUNCEY WASHINGTON (RB): One scout said to me that on film Washington looks like a 4.73 guy. No one expected him to run a 4.35 forty. But he did. Surprise of the day. The stadium erupted when his official time was announced.

SEDRICK ELLIS (DT): Sedrick Ellis is a beast, and fast too. Five seconds flat in the 40. But most impressive was his quickness out of the stance. The guy fires up and into his blocks. I don't think he'll last past Cincy at #9.

KEITH RIVERS (LB): 42" inch vertical today. He literally out-jumped the machine designed to test vertical leaps. He had to do it again so that he could be measured properly. Rivers had nothing to prove today, but he worked out anyway.

THOMAS WILLIAMS (LB): Maybe the smartest guy on the field. Scouts with whom I spoke love his intangibles and also his work ethic. He's not the same caliber as Rivers, but he helped himself today. I spoke with his teammate Rey Maualuga, who in a nutshell said that Williams was the most impressive guy at Pro Day, and that he made himself some money with a bump in draft stock.

SAM BAKER (OT): He's a value pick in the second round, and a steal in the third round. He doesn't fare well on the quote-unquote measurables (i.e. he's slooooooooow) but in position drills he looks like a first-rounder. He's a football player, not a 40-yard-dash runner.

Combine updates: Moving up and moving down.

Remember this name: Dustin Keller. The Purdue tight end made some big noise at the combine yesterday, but he wasn't the only one who did. As for Glenn Dorsey? Well, we knew he wasn't the picture of durability.

The First Breakdown of the 2008 NFL Draft

Here is a look at some position ratings for the 2008 NFL draft. With a lack a senior talent, I have included junior who are projected to come out this year.

Quaterback
1. Matt Ryan-Boston College
2. Brian Brohm-Louisville
3. Andre Woodson-Kentucky
4. Colt Brennan-Hawaii
5. Chad Henne-Michigan

Others likely to be drafted- Dennis Dixon (Oregon), Joe Flacco (Delaware)

Running Back
1. Darren McFadden-Arkansas
2. Rashard Mendenhall-Illinois
3. Jonathan Stewart-Oregon
4. Mike Hart-Michigan
5. Ray Rice-Rutgers

Others likely to be drafted- Kevin Smith (UCF), Allen Patrick (Oklahoma)

Wide Receiver
1. Limas Sweed-Texas
2. Earley Doucet-LSU
3. Adarius Bowman-Oklahoma St.
4. DeSean Jackson-California
5. Mario Manningham-Michigan

Others likely to be drafted- Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma), DJ Hall (Alabama)

Tight End
1. Fred Davis-USC
2. John Carlson-Notre Dame
3. Travis Beckum-Wisconsin
4. Martin Rucker-Missouri
5. Chase Coffman-Missouri

Offensive Line
1. Jake Long-Michigan
2. Samuel Baker-USC
3. Ryan Clady-Boise State
4. Jeffrey Otah-Pittsburgh
5. Micheal Oher-Ole Miss

Defensive Line
1. Chris Long-Virginia (DE)
2. Glenn Dorsey-LSU (DT)
3. Calais Campbell-Miami (DE)
4. Sedrick Ellis-USC (DT)
5. Vernon Gholston-Ohio State (DE)

Others likely to be drafted- Derrick Harvey (Florida), Kentwan Balmer (UNC)

Linebackers
1. James Laurinaitis-Ohio State
2. Dan Connor-Penn State
3. Keith Rivers-USC
4. Ali Highsmith-LSU
5. Rey Maualugor-USC

Defensive Backs
1. Kenny Phillips-Miami
2. Malcolm Jenkins-Ohio State
3. Aqib Talib-Kansas
4. Mike Jenkins-South Florida
5. Reggie Smith-Oklahoma

Justifications
1. If West Virginia does not win a national title, Steve Slaton will remain in school and take one more shot at the title with his teammate Pat White.
2. Chris Long is currently ranked above Glenn Dorsey due to Dorsey's constant injury problems (knee and back).
3. Dennis Dixon will be dropped in the draft due to his current injury (ACL). He dropped from a early 2nd round pick to a late 3rd to early 4th.
4. The running back position is very deep this year and could yield 15-20 running backs taken.

Watch in the coming weeks for the first mock draft projection.
