With the Browns selecting two receivers in the second round yesterday - Brian Robiskie and Mohammed Mossaquoi - the speculation of Braylon Edwards’ future with the Browns continues. This time, there is word of Edwards being involved in a deal with the New York Jets that would send RB Thomas Jones to Cleveland. This rumor was apparently fueled when the Jets decided to pick RB Shonn Greene out of Iowa.

Seahawks-Only Mock Draft v.2.0

We've done this before, but that was then, and now that the combine is gone and most of the key free agents have been signed, I am going to make some new picks. Just for the record, this is what I think will happen and not necessarily what I would like to happen. I am also assuming that no trades will be made, which will likely not be the case. Here we go.
Round 1, Pick 4: Matthew Stafford, QB, GeorgiaThe first thing on your mind might be "Stafford? There isn't any way he makes it down here! You are crazy!"Well, maybe I am crazy, but not because of this. The blog Field Gulls made a pretty convincing argument that would back this theory up, and even though the Lions have traded Kitna away, that doesn't necessarily mean that Stafford is their guy.

If Stafford makes it to four, we will draft him. He's got the things Tim Ruskell looks for: a lot of starts at a large, successful college program, a long history as a prospect, and no arrests or evident character risks. Given our long term need at QB and how well he fits what new OC Gregg Knapp's systems have been in the past, Stafford will not fall past #4 unless he gets hurt or commits a felony.

Round 2, Pick 37: Duke Robinson, OG, OklahomaDuke Robinson is another guy who makes a lot of sense as a Seahawk based on what Tim Ruskell likes. A highly recruited guy out of high school, Robinson was part of ungodly offensive line on an Oklahoma offense that averaged 547.9 yards per game. He has the size and versatility to move over to tackle is we need him to. For a team has has needs at O-Line, but isn't quite sure what they are, Robinson is a great selection.

Round 3, Pick 68: Michael Hamlin, SS, ClemsonHamlin looks like a no-brainer as long as the Hawks don't choose Patrick Chung in the 2nd, which is a possibility. Hamlin's career screams future Seahawk: a four year starter at a big university whose stellar play doesn't match his decent athleticism. According to Hamlin himself, the Hawks showed lots of interest in him at the combine, and the Hawks' pursuit of Jermaine Phillips in FA shows that they are in the market for a safety

Round 4, Pick 101: James Davis, RB, ClemsonYes, another Clemson Tiger. Davis was another 4 year player who had a great career. However, his senior year was a bit of a disappointment, and that's why he is available here. He has a reputation as a strong, tackle breaking back. His combine wasn't particularly strong, but that's never stopped Ruskell before. Since Gregg Knapp has consistently used multiple running backs, Davis makes sense as a Hawk.

Round 6, Pick 165: Bruce Johnson, CB, MiamiWith Josh Wilson playing more and more defense, the Seahawks will need a new kick returner, and Bruce Johnson fits the bill. Bruce Johnson physically will remind many of Wilson: At 5'9, this isn't the guy you want guarding Antonio Davis. However, his kick returning ability is solid. He has excellent speed and agility, and would do a good job at keeping Wilson fresh.

Round 7, Pick 196: Morrty Ivy, OLB, West VirginiaMorrty Ivy, an All Big East selection last season, was a key player on WVU's defense, which ranked in the top ten in terms of points allowed. While OLB is his natural position he has experience playing ILB. If Leroy Hill doesn't sign a long term deal, or Peterson or Tatupu suffer an injury, Ivy could be a good fill-in.

Agree or disagree? Are there other players that you think the Seahawks will draft? Comment away.

Alvin Keels Is Not Having A Fun Combine

After the University of Alabama looked miserable against the Utah
Utes in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, I thought that Alabama's poor performance might actually have a beneficial effect on Andre Smith's
draft stock. Alabama's offense could not move, which Smith's advisors
might have tried to blame on Smith's absence from the game. But those
thoughts are long gone. Andre Smith ended up signing with Alvin Keels of Global Management Group.
And Keels has had a lot to handle ever since signing the O-Lineman. As
you already know, Smith showed up to the Combine this past weekend,
refused to participate, and then fled the scene. Keels had to juggle
ten-thousand media requests wondering what the hell was going on with
Smith, while catering to his other clients at the Combine, which
include two running-backs: James Davis (Clemson) and Brandon Ore (West Liberty).

As if Keels, Smith, and the rest of the GMG team did not have enough
on their plates Re: Andre Smith. Smith was reportedly suspended from
Alabama from improper dealings with an agent, which continued to be a
topic of conversation up to the Combine. In fact, Smith has been
fielding many questions from NFL teams concerning the suspension. The Birmingham News reports
that in an interview with an NFL team, Smith stated that the suspension
was due to his uncle's contact with an agent (not an NCAA violation)
and his refusal to cooperate with Alabama's Compliance Office in its
investigation of the contact. The agent that was supposedly talking to
Andre Smith's uncle is Melvin Bratton of DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment.

Brandon Thorn's most recent Mock Draft has Smith going #2 overall to St. Louis. I predict that his next update will have Smith falling at least a few picks.

Bowl Picks Part 7: Outback, Capital One, Gator, Rose, and Orange

Outback Bowl: 1/1, 8:00am PT Iowa vs. South Carolina
This is a good match up between the Big 12 and the SEC. South Carolina has an offense that often struggles and doesn?t have a consistent offense, but they do have a tough defense. Iowa has a decent defense but their main strength is their running game. Iowa running back Shonn Greene is one of the nation?s best backs and he will be the key for them. South Carolina has some good line backers that could slow Greene but in the end he will have a big game and lead Iowa to a victory.

Capital One Bowl: 1/1, 10:00am PT Michigan State vs. Georgia
Out of all the bowl games, this one might be the most exciting. Both teams feature great running backs with Knowshon Moreno from Georgia, and Javon Ringer of Michigan State. I can see both backs having big games so the key to winning will be which offense can also provide a balanced passing attack. Georgia has a ton of offensive weapons including quarterback Matt Stafford who is more than capable of spreading the ball around. Michigan State will struggle passing and that will be the key for Georgia to win. I think Georgia will win and dominate offensively in both running and passing.

Gator Bowl: 1/1, 10:00am PT Clemson vs. Nebraska
This game features to of the hottest teams in the nation. Clemson had big expectations coming into the season but didn?t follow through until late in the season. Nebraska has been a solid team all season. These teams match up well with each other and have similar strengths and weaknesses. The difference maker in this game will be the running attack of Clemson with James Davis and CJ Spiller. I think that these two, especially Spiller will come up big for Clemson and bring them to victory.

The Rose Bowl: 1/1, 1:30 pm PT USC vs. Penn State
This game is probably the most evenly matched out of all the BCS besides the Championship. Both teams have great defenses. Penn States is solid all around, and USC?s defense is easily the best in the nation. USC?s defense is loaded with play makers in all positions and they will man-handle the Penn State offense. Although Penn States defense is also good, USC?s offense is good enough to move the ball against them. This game may be close in the beginning but I think that USC is too good and will eventually pull away and be victorious.

Orange Bowl: 1/1, 5:30pm PT Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati
This game will be a great defensive match up. A Cincinnati team that is on the rise, against a Virginia Tech team that is always tough. Both teams feature offensive weapons that can make this a high scoring affair, but I think that both defenses will come to play and make this a low scoring game. In a close, low scoring game I like Cincinnati, they are a tough team that is excited to be in this game, and they will pull through like they have done all season.

TSP's College Football Conference Previews: # 4 ACC

We are on to the second week of our BCS conference previews. Today we take a look at our #4 ranked conference, the ACC.

Projected Finish
Atlantic Division
1. Clemson
2. Florida State
3. Wake Forest
4. Maryland
5. Boston College
6. NC State

Coastal Division
1. Virginia Tech
2. North Carolina
3. Miami
4. Georgia Tech
5. Virginia
6. Duke

Off the Radar Team
Butch Davis enters his second season at the helm in Chapel Hill. North Carolina experienced a number of growing pains in 2007 and finished just 4-8. The expectations will be pretty average again for the Tarheels, but a few factors could lead to a surprisingly good season. First, Davis has more depth this season than last. We like the way Davis recruits, and he'll have two classes in the program this season. Along with the added depth, UNC returns 17 of 22 starters. These young players showed flashes last year and will be much more confident. The final reason we like this team is that they play an extremely favorable schedule in a weak division.

Best Chance for the Heisman
The best chance for a trip to NYC will likely come from the Clemson trio of quarterback Cullen Harper or running backs James Davis and CJ Spiller. One of these three should really shine this season, and Harper is the most likely candidate. He has the one of the best receivers in the conference (senior Aaron Kelly) and can throw to either of his filthy running backs out of the backfield. Plus, teams will gameplan against the run, creating even more opportunities for Harper.

Bold Predictions

This might not seem bold, but Clemson will win the conference. The reason we are listing it here is because we still feel Bowden is a bad coach, but he has too much talent and the conference is too weak for him not to succeed.

Wake Forest will continue to compete for an ACC Championship. If Clemson slips up, Jim Grobe's team will be right there.

The only team that won't be in the hunt for the Coastal Division crown will be Duke. The other five teams all have question marks, but could find a way to Tampa Bay.

Florida State will make a move away from senior quarterback Drew Weatherford. They pretty much have to if the offense wants to produce. We hope to see true freshman E.J. Manuel gets some snaps this year.

TSP College Football Conference Preview Schedule
Monday August 11th: Big East
Thursday August 15: Pac 10
Thursday August 21st: Big 10
Monday August 25th: Big 12
Thursday August 28th: SEC

Walker Sports ACC Preview:Atlantic Division

College football season is just over 50 days away, and I cannot wait. While traditionally Saturday is a Rugby day in Walker-Sports land, even rugby takes a back seat to college football. Walker-Sports originates in ACC territory and lives and breathes ACC football, yes the conference is now 10 years removed from their glory days, but better days are coming, and as out of conference scheduling picks up for many schools the ACC will soon be flexing their muscles for all the NCAA to see once again.

So saddle up, make yourself a pull pork sandwich, pour yourself a shot of Southern Comfort (or a glass of Merlot if you're at a UVA game) and get ready to watch to some ACC football the way it was meant to be. Tough and gritty with a wide open race to the finish.

ACC Preseason Preview Atlantic Division

Clemson Tigers: There is no doubt that the Clemson Tigers are the cream of the crop when it comes to ACC football, they may even be among the elites in the NCAA. However, there is one small problem. They are the Clemson Tigers, their coach is Tommy Bowden and we have all heard this story before and it always has the same sad ending. The Tigers are stacked with talent Cullen Harper at QB is a stud who completes a high percentage of his passes. At tailback Clemson has arguably the best two tailbacks in the ACC with James Davis and C.J. Spiller. On the defensive side Clemson is returning eight starters and will look to use their speed to apply pressure to opposing teams and knock them off their game plan early.

The biggest problem Clemson will face will be keeping focus and finishing what they started. Too often Bowden's crew has been the most talented team in the ACC, but not the most disciplined team and the result is another, 8-4 season; great if you're Duke, but a waste if you were thinking BCS in the preseason. Let's hope they don't do the same this year.

Record: 10-1
Key Games: Alabama, Florida State,

Florida State Seminoles: Okay, so this was a tough one, and I'll be the first to admit that the 'Noles got the nod because of who they are and prior reputation, but nonetheless they made it into the second spot. Drew Weatherford has been in college since about 1990 it feels like. By now he has to be the most experienced QB in the NCAA, and that will be a big help. Weatherford was aided by the addition of Jimbo fisher as an offensive coordinator last year, and he will look to build on that previous success.

The biggest asset for Florida State is a weak schedule. They open with four consecutive home games. Matter of fact the 'Noles won't leave the state of Florida till mid October. This means Florida State has a good chance to rack up some quality wins at home and that could go a long way in an average ACC conference.

Record: 8-4
Key Games: Colorado, Virginia Tech, Clemson,

Wake forest Demon Deacons: Wake is in the middle of their greatest run in school history. While the coffers don't have the talent they once had two seasons ago, they still have enough to get the job done. That means they will be .500 at the very least and with a little bit of luck they can jump into the second spot in the Atlantic Division. The bulk of their success will depend on if they can move the all on offense. Last year the Demon Deacons were routinely out gained and it cost them.

Record: 7-5
Key Games: Clemson, Virginia, Boston College

Maryland Terrapins: The Terps have struggled the past few seasons. The bulk of their problems have resulted from inconsistency at the quarterback position. Despite the instability the Terps are a tough out especially for ACC opponents. Ralph Friedgen seems to get his teams to play just well enough to keep his job. That means the Terps will be playing spoiler to a couple of ACC opponents. I would like to say that dropping WVU from the schedule would help Maryland this season, but adding Cal is no cakewalk. Look for the Terps to upset some ACC's teams bid for a title, just hope it's not yours.

Record 6-6
Key Games: Cal, Boston College, Wake forest

Boston College Eagles:B The honeymoon is over for Coach Jagodzinski and company. Last year Jags was a first year coach and he feasted on the fruits of Tom O'Brian's labor, mainly his grooming of QB Matt Ryan. Now Ryan along with a load of other talent is gone, and the Eagles are ready to return to earth. BC is only returning 10 starters meaning they will be very inexperienced and that leads to mistakes and close loses. As usual BC will be solid on both lines, but they just won't have enough fire power to be in the mix. This will be one Boston team that does not bring home a championship.

Record 5-7
Key Games: UCF, North Carolina, Wake forest

North Carolina State Wolfpack: Tom O'Brian is a hell of a coach, and he will be put to the test with this NC State team. They lost 10 starters from a 5-7 team, and they only have freshmen to replace them. Combine that with a brutal non-conference schedule and you can bet the Pack will slide before they are ready to climb again. But hang in there NC State supporters, this year may be rough but positive results will be coming down the pike very soon.

Record: 3-9
Key Games: Wake forest, East Carolina

09 Draft Rankings: RBs

1. Chris Wells (Ohio State)*
Round Projection: Early-Middle 1st
Wells has been great at Ohio State and should have another fantastic season for the Buckeyes. Expect him to go in round one unless he just completely falls off the map.

2. Knowshon Moreno (Georgia)*
Round Projection: Middle 1st
He's young and was redshirted as a Freshman so he is illegible here. Not sure if he will leave or not but if he does the NFL scouts will love him. He's a powerful runner and he's quick...
