Rams Still Have Interest In S Quintin Mikell

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Dispatch, the Rams still have an interest in re-signing free agent S Quintin Mikell.
Mikell, 32, was released by the team back in March in order to free up some cap space after the two sides reportedly failed to reach an agreement on a restructured contract.
Safety remains a need for the Rams even after they drafted USC S T.J. McDonald in the third-round. Mikell would likely have to accept a role as a backup if he were to return to St Louis next season and could even be asked to take help out on special teams.
Mikell totaled 101 tackles, three sacks, and four forced fumbles last season, which is actually pretty good for an aging veteran. We have him listed as the No. 14 player in our Best Available Free Agents list.

Jeff Fisher Says Rams Want To Re-Sign SS Quintin Mikell

Some way, somehow, Jeff Fisher would like to have strong safety Quintin Mikell back on the roster in 2013. But at this point in the offseason, less than two weeks into the free agency period, there’s no guarantee that will happen.

“We have interest,” Fisher said at the NFL owners’ meetings. “He played very well for us last year.”

With his base salary scheduled to jump to $6 million from $1 million in 2013, releasing Mikell almost was a necessity at the start of the free agency.

“It’s just one of those things that you have to do once you get in the process (of free agency) and you start making moves,” Fisher said. “But we have interest. The defensive staff was really happy with him last year.”

Basically, the Rams needed to make sure they had enough salary-cap room when it became apparent that they’d have a chance to sign tight end Jared Cook and offensive tackle Jake Long in free agency.

The Rams tried to restructure Mikell’s contract, which had two years remaining, before releasing

Rams Rumors: Quintin Mikell to re-sign

Free-agent safety Quintin Mikell was released by the St. Louis Rams this month because of his $9 million scheduled salary-cap hit, but the Rams would like to bring him back into the fold.

Coach Jeff Fisher told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week:

"He played very well for us last year. It's just one of those things that you have to do once you get in the process (of free agency) and you start making moves. But we have interest. The defensive staff was really happy with him last year."

The Rams are low on cap space, and teams generally don't want to pay premier money to safeties. Fisher said the team was negotiating with Mikell prior to his release, but simply ran out of time.

Mikell improved in coverage last season and recorded 101 tackles, three sacks and four forced fumbles. With just Darian Stewart, Rodney McLeod and Matthew Daniels on the roster, the Rams might be forced to look toward the draft if a deal with Mikell can't be worked out

Rams release safety Quintin Mikell

The St. Louis Rams are shopping for two starting safeties after releasing Quintin Mikell and with Craig Dahl an unrestricted free agent.

Mikell, a strong safety, was released Monday to clear salary cap space. He was third on the team with 114 tackles and three sacks and three forced fumbles.

Dahl started every game at free safety and had 100 tackles and an interception but struggled in coverage.

Another safety, Darian Stewart, is set to be a restricted free agent after an injury-shortened season. The Rams have two undrafted free agents at the position, Matt Daniels and Rodney McLeod.

NFL Free Agency: Report suggests St. Louis Rams to release S Quintin Mikell

As we head into the final 30 hours prior to the start of the NFL Free Agency period, several teams will be making several roster moves. One report suggests that the St. Louis Rams will release veteran safety Quintin Mikell this afternoon. Mikell had a very productive season but would count $6 million against the Rams salary cap this season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports this pending move on Twitter. “Safety market increases: Rams will release veteran safety Qunitin Mikell on Monday.” The Rams roster is shaping up to look much different next season. Free agent wide receiver Danny Amendola is expected to be pursued heavily by the Philadelphia Eagles. Veteran running back Steven Jackson has voided his contract option and could land with the Atlanta Falcons in free agency according to several rumors linking the pair. Reports also suggest that the Miami Dolphins could be interested in Rams receiver Brandon Gibson if they are unable to land WR Mike Wallace in free agency.

Rams Release Veteran SS Quintin Mikell

In what surely wasn’t an easy decision, the Rams have decided to release veteran safety Quintin Mikell.

Mikell, who signed with the Rams as a free agent in 2011, played well last season as a box safety. He finished with 114 tackles, forced four fumbles, and recorded three sacks.

But his base salary was scheduled to jump to $6 million this season from $1 million in 2012, and he was scheduled to count $9 million against the salary cap this season.

Releasing Mikell, who turns 33 in September, saves the Rams $3 million against the cap.

Report: Rams Will Release S Quintin Mikell

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Rams will release S Quintin Mikell on Monday.
Mikell, 32, signed a four-year deal worth $27 million that contains $14 million guaranteed back in 2011. He had base salaries of $6 million and $7 million coming his way in the next two seasons.
The Rams were looking for an upgrade at the backend of their defense when they brought Mikell in. He actually graded out as the No. 5 best safety in the league, according to Pro Football Focus, so there’s a chance he could catch on somewhere in the coming weeks.

Rams' turnover slump at 5 games

ST. LOUIS (AP) An errant pass bounced off hands of the New York Jets' Joe McKnight on the sideline, tantalizingly soaring just out of the reach of St. Louis Rams safety Quintin Mikell and an easy touchdown return.

In the opening series of last week's loss, Mikell stripped Mark Sanchez, and the ball bounced right back into the quarterback's hands.

Those are just two of the latest frustrations for St. Louis, which hasn't forced a turnover the last five games - tied for the NFL's worst since 1950. Given turnovers are such momentum changers, it should come as no surprise that the Rams (3-6-1) are 0-4-1 during that stretch.

"We're stripping, the ball's flying around, it'll just happen," coach Jeff Fisher said. "But I don't think I've been in a stretch before that long."

In the last 62 years, only the Rams, the 2011 Indianapolis Colts and 2006 Washington Redskins have gone five games without a takeaway. They'll try to avoid setting a dubious record

Rams SS Quintin Mikell Leaves Game Vs Cardinals After Blow To Head

Injuries are starting to take a toll on the St. Louis Rams. A few plays after wide receiver Danny Amendola left the game, starting strong safety Quintin Mikell was helped off the field after hitting his head in a collision with his own teammate.
Mikell's head and neck hit the knee of linebacker Josh Hull on a play late in the second quarter. He laid on the field for a few moments, surrounded by training staff. It silenced what had been a rowdy crowd. Mikell did eventually get up and walk off the field without any additional assistance. Source: SBNation.com Attached Thumbnails
