David Falk's State Of The NBA

David Falk re-entered the sports agency world in 2007 (representing draft pick, Jeff Green), and has not been afraid to vocalize his opinions about the industry ever since.

"The sports agent business has become so corrupt ? I would not encourage anyone to try to become an agent right now." [Short and Sweet] - 4/23/08

"Instead of evolving, the sports agent business has devolved. We're talking about reverse evolution. It's basically unregulated and there's wholesale cheating going on. I'm not angry about it. It's just that it's about buying clients instead of building relationships." [Another Darren Interviews An Agent] - 5/2/08

"A guy who has been in the sports business for 40 years, and was basically cryogenically frozen, resurfaced last year, and we both competed for the same player this year. The player eventually went with me, but three days after this player told this agent he selected me, this agent told him, 'You've made a terrible mistake. David is a really bad person. I'm here for you if you change your mind.'

The joke is that this was a person I once worked for and later he worked for me. Then I find out from this player that this agent told him that he did Michael Jordan's first Nike deal. That's ridiculous. That's like Pluto saying he invented the Polio vaccine that everyone knows was invented by Jonas Salk. So I told this player, 'All you have to do is call Michael and he'll tell you David did the deal.'

"The truth is that person wasn't even sitting in the room when we did the deal. He was totally uninvolved. But that's the state of the business. It's despicable that this agent would be stupid enough to say he negotiated Michael Jordan's Nike deal. Falk has a new book out called, The Bald Truth, so you had to figure that the long-time agent would throw some controversial quotes to the press in order to gain some publicity. Falk spoke to Howard Beck of the New York Times about an impending labor battle between the NBA and the NBPA. Falk stated,

"I think [the labor battle is] going to be very, very extreme, because I think that the times are extreme. The owners have the economic wherewithal to shut the thing down for two years, whatever it takes, to get a system that will work long term. The players do not have the economic wherewithal to sit out one year."

Should agents, players, and owners be worrying now about Falk's Doomsday in 2011? Will all the power be in the hands of the owners and Commissioner David Stern?

One thing that struck me about Bill Simmons' trade value column was his unabashed hatred for Michael Beasley's game. He made three separate references to the rookie: Jason Thompson: I mocked him on draft day and he shoved it in my face like a cream pie. Top-notch energy guy, good defender, lots to like. The Sonics failure to win is the root of all this evil. It's a sports-strong town and they can't go anywhere but up with Kevin Durant, Jeff Green and the point guard they are sure to get in the draft. Still, promises don't ride with tax payers when it comes to trying to build a new stadium, which is what Sonics brass is pining for. A move to OK City won't make everything okay with this franchise.

Georgetown (3-0) @ Old Dominion (3-3) While Old Dominion has played the sleeper in years past and actually beat Georgetown in D.C. by 13 last year, the Hoyas are hungry and ready for revenge. The Monarchs have absolutely no chance of containing 7′2″ center Roy Hibbert, who is averaging 17 points on shooting 63% from the field. Coach Thompson will make sure the big man gets the ball as much as possible down in the paint. Georgetown covers easily winning by at least 15 points. Just imagine if Jeff Green stayed in school..

As early as it is into the 2007-2008 NBA season I'm going to 'go out on a limb' and make my pick for this season's Rookie of the Year. I know the title of this post sort of gives things away; and while I'd love to be controversial and say that Jeff Green would edge out his rookie teammate for the honors, I have little doubt that Kevin Durant is going to end the season as this year's RoY. Last year's winner Brandon Roy didn't have particularly awe inspiring numbers with 16.8 points, 4 assists and about 4.5 rebounds per game but they were solid for a rookie and were apparently enough for him to claim the trophy. Durant shouldn't have any problem matching and surpassing those numbers and letting the league know that things are looking up for his Sonics (now if they could only get a big man). Three games into his rookie campaign Durant is at 22.5 points and 5 rebounds per game. Never mind the fact that there aren't truly any other rookies who could vie for the Rookie of the Year honors, with Greg Oden out for the season; but as Durant gets used to the rigors of the NBA lifestyle and the speed and physical nature of the pro game I'm predicting that the 22.5 ppg we see now will end up around 24 or 25. If (once?) that happens, be sure to keep an eye out for Durant as I'm sure he'll begin to earn that estimated $50 million paycheck from Nike and make some commercial appearances; if those aren't already in the works. It's also likely that his star power and marketability will surpass Oden's just by virtue of the fact that he's played and proven his worth on the court and on the professional stage. As early as it is though; there's very little that can be said for certain and we'll just have to wait and see how things play out. Still, it's pretty good to see exciting new players entering the league on a yearly basis to add to the list of big name player. Now if only we could keep the boring Spurs out of the NBA Finals and get some rivalries to develop and perhaps we'd see the NBA begin to return to the league it was. -Samyr Laine

So, the big news in Seattle is that they got the 2nd pick in the draft, took Kevin Durant, and then traded Ray Allen to the Powerhouse That Is Now The Boston Celtics for the 5th Pick That Is Now Jeff Green.
